Duty Support

Spoiler Warning : This article contains spoilers! |
The Duty Support system can be used to progress through main scenario dungeons and 4-player trials with a party of NPCs.
As of patch 6.5, all main scenario dungeons and 4-player trials are supported. Newly-released main scenario dungeons have Duty Support available on release. However, most optional dungeons and most 8-player trials are not supported. Starting from patch 7.1, optional dungeons that are part of Duty Roulette: Leveling will begin to have Duty Support implemented.
Parties must be composed of 1 tank, 1 healer, and 2 DPS. This feature cannot be used while in a party with other players, limited jobs are not allowed, and Level Sync cannot be disabled. The player must also meet the average item level requirement for the duty to register.
Note that if the player character dies in Duty Support mode, the party will automatically wipe.
Duty Support vs. Real Players
Completing dungeons using Duty Support offers several advantages and disadvantages compared to forming a party with other players (typically using Duty Finder).
Advantages
- NPCs offer flavor text and unique dialogue that can enhance the story context of the dungeon, especially for first-time runs. In addition, many Duty Support NPCs from Heavensward onwards are significant in the main story.
- Can explore and complete dungeon at own pace without influence from other players
- Players can learn boss mechanics by following the movements of the NPC party members, who are programmed to do them correctly (with very few exceptions)
- No queue time compared to a matchmade party in Duty Finder, or waiting for a party to fill in Party Finder. This is particularly helpful when playing as DPS, in a low-population data center, or during off-peak hours.
- Do not need to roll against other players for loot
Disadvantages
- NPCs are tuned to deal less damage compared to an average Duty Finder party, resulting in longer runs (~20-30 minutes). In addition, NPC tanks will not engage more than one group of enemies at a time unless if the player deliberately runs ahead to pull more.
- Automatic party wipe if the player character dies
- Can only run with NPCs solo
- Fewer overall loot drops
- Some awkward mechanical resolution which may be annoying (e.g., forcing the player out of melee range to take a stack marker AoE)
Accessing the Duty Support System from Duty Entrance
After reaching the quest objective to clear a dungeon in the main scenario, the Duty Support icon will display above the entrance of the duty. Select the entrance, and then choose the option to enter the dungeon with a group of NPCs in the window that appears. A new menu will display, from which you can select "Register for Duty" to begin the duty.
In dungeons added starting in Shadowbringers (Lv. 71+), which are compatible with Trust, several allied NPCs will be standing near the dungeon's entrance. Speaking to them will also bring up the Duty Support UI. Party member selection is also available in most Lv. 71+ dungeons.
In Duty Support mode, NPCs will always be the minimum level to enter the dungeon.
Accessing the Duty Support System from Main Menu
First, select Duty Support under Duty in the main menu. A list of available duties will be displayed in the window that appears. Select the duty you wish to enter, confirm which NPCs will be accompanying you, then select the "Register for Duty."
The Duty Finder and Trust menus can also be accessed by pressing the appropriate button at the bottom of the Duty Support menu.
Party Selection
Most Lv. 71+ dungeons (Shadowbringers onwards) allow you to switch out the NPCs in your party. This is indicated by a message that displays underneath your party members.
Click on your party members or press the confirm button on your controller to open a window showing a list of available NPCs for that duty.
- The NPC party members available in instanced duties prior to Shadowbringers are fixed according to your role, and therefore cannot be selected.
- All Lv. 71+ dungeons compatible with Duty Support have this option available in the UI, even if in practice, party member selection is not possible due on a limited number of available NPCs and their roles.
