Art at War: Sugar Riot

The arena is surrounded by an AoE that will instantly kill anyone who touches it. Being hit with any avoidable AoEs will inflict a -30% Damage Down debuff for 30 seconds, along with possibly other effects.

Players should assign: light parties; clock spreads with melees at the southern inter-cardinals, off-tank being south, ranged at northern inter cardinals, and healers being at the sides, with light parties consist of north and west, and south and east; and pairs of players consisting of tanks with melees and healers with ranged DPS.

Strategy

Intro

Name Description
Mousse Mural High raidwide damage.
Color Riot Tankbusters targeting the nearest and farthest player.

  • The boss will raise one gun, and lower the other.

    • The raised gun will target the nearest player.

    • The lowered gun will target the farthest player.

  • Furthermore, each gun will be randomly colored either orange or blue.

    • Being hit with the respective color will apply a vuln to that color, meaning the tanks will need to soak a
tankbuster of the opposite color to their vuln. These vulns are permanent and persist through death,
until the fight is completed or the party wipes.

      • Warm Tint will be applied from the orange gun.
      • Cool Tint will be applied from the blue gun.

Color Clash Mechanic Set

Name Description
Wingmark Every player will receive a Wingmark debuff that expires in 20 seconds. They will be flung approximately a distance slightly less of the length of the arena upon the debuff expiring.
Color Clash Two seconds after Wingmark is applied, the boss will shoot paint into the air.

  • If they shoot twice in the air, light party stacks are being held.

  • If they shoot four times in the air, partner stacks are being held.

    • The stacks will be held until very shortly after the telegraphs of Double Style.
  • Magic Vulnerability Up will be applied when soaking the damage.
Double Style On 10 seconds left of Wingmark, the boss will paint bombs within the arena and enemies outside of the arena on the death wall.

  • Bombs: like in normal mode, are large circular AoEs. They may be painted with wings, which causes them to be launched across the arena. Bombs will always and only make one side of the arena unsafe.
  • Enemies: up to two different enemies can be painted. They will always and only spawn in the middle of the cardinal sides of the arena:
    • Succubi are defamations.
    • Morbols are cones expanding from them.
Strategy There will always be one safe inter-cardinal.
  • Identify the side without explosions from the bombs, then identify the enemy(ies) on the cardinals.

  • Wingmark will expire right as Double Style is finished casting.
  • Players will have a short amount of time to adjust into their Color Clash stacks right after the telegraphs from Double Style resolves.
Name Description
Sticky Mousse Two random players will be targeted with a circular point-blank AoE.

  • The AoE will apply a very short Magic Vulnerability Up to the players hit, and Mousse Minne, which binds them.

  • Shortly after the magic vuln expires, the players with Mousse Minne will explode, which need to be stacked by light-parties. Another very short magic vuln is applied with the stack.

Strategy Players in preparation for this mechanic should be in their clock spreads.

  • Ideally, one player from each light party will be hit with Sticky Mousse; players should stack on their light-party member with Mousse Minne.
  • Rarely, two players from the same light party will be hit. To adjust, the closest players will stack on the player with Mousse Minne; leftover players will adjust manually.

Desert Phase

Layer 1 and 2

Name Description
Sugarscape Phase transition.
  • Deals no raidwide damage, but places a Sweltering DoT that lasts for the entire phase.

  • Places a long and short debuff of Heating Up. Will result in a defamation upon expiry.
    • The short debuff lasts for 43 seconds. One tank and one DPS will receive the short debuff.
    • The long debuff lasts for 74 seconds. Only both healers will receive the long debuff.
  • One DPS who is not Heating Up will receive Burning Up. It lasts for 43 seconds. Is a stack upon expiry.
Layer 1 Like in normal mode, begins spawning cacti around the arena.

  • After completing the cast, the player with aggro will receive auto-attacks from the boss for around 30 seconds until the next mechanic of Sticky Mousse.
  • The short debuff of Heating Up and Burning Up will expire about 5 seconds after the final sets of cacti explode.
Layer 2 Quicksand will engulf most of the arena, only leaving the corners safe. Cacti also spawn.

  • One corner will be unsafe due to a cactus overlapping it.
  • The long debuff of Heating Up will expire at the same time the cacti explode.
  • The quicksand will disappear after resolving.
Strategy The main tank will keep the boss as north as possible, dodging the cacti; this makes it easier for party members to predict and see where they go.
  • The players with the short Heating Up will spread away from the party before their debuff expires; after the final set of cacti explode.
    • The afflicted tank will go to the north-east corner.
    • The afflicted DPS will go to the south-east corner.
  • The party will stack middle.
    • This ensures that no player is hit by the defamations, and to naturally resolve the Burning Up stack debuff.
Name Description
Double Style Another semi-circle puddle of quicksand will engulf one half of the arena.

  • All supports and DPS will be tethered to a bomb, or winged bomb, which deals moderate damage and inflicts a short magic vuln.
    • The players tethered to a winged bomb will drop a winged bomb facing in the direction their model is facing.
Strategy All players tethered to a bomb will be loosely spread in the quicksand.
  • All players tethered to a winged bomb will be out of the quicksand, but facing toward the quicksand. This is to aim their winged bombs to fly into the quicksand.
  • If done correctly, all bombs will be absorbed by the quicksand, and none will explode above ground.

Adds Phase

Name Description
Soul Sugar The boss will begin spawning adds. Live Painting will be executed to make the adds targetable.
  • The adds that will be spawned throughout the phase will are:
    • Mus: moderate auto attack damage. If left alive for a long time, will enrage.
    • Yans: heavy auto attack damage. If near a Mu, their auto attacks will deal heavily increased damage.
    • Gimme Cats: will fully deplete the limit gauge whenever it spawns. Will jump around randomly, but the final jump will be baited onto a player and execute a telegraphed point-blank AoE. If left alive for a long time, will enrage sooner than Mus.
    • Feather Rays: will tether to the first player to attack them. Will create medium-sized puddles under tethered players about every ten seconds, whose initial impact will inflict a vuln for eight seconds.
      • The puddles will persist through the entire phase, and will inflict a DoT if stood in long enough.
    • Jabberwocks: will target and Bind a random healer, then will slowly make its way to the targetted healer. Will instantly kill the healer upon contact. Can be stunned.
Strategy All enemies have a different priority to be targetted.

  • Jabberwocks, whenever they are active, take the highest priority to kill; players will single-target them.
  • Feather Rays, due to them shrinking the arena and keeping a ranged player occupied, are also high priority.
  • Gimme Cats enrage sooner than Mus.
  • Mus and Yans must be kept away from each other. The off-tank should tank the Yans, and always be cycling mitigation.

For increased efficiency, tanks should always try to keep groups of enemies close to each other so skills that deal AoE cleave damage can benefit further.

Wave 1 "Cleavemaxxing" Strategy
One Yan west,
one Gimme Cat north,
two Mus east.
The off-tank will tank the Yan west. The main tank will tank the Mus and the boss as normal.
  • The whole party except for the main tank will stack near the off-tank's Yan, and focus it down.
    • This is to greatly increase the chance that the Gimme Cat jumps onto the stacked party, allowing it to be cleaved with the Yan.
    • This is to also free the off-tank so they can join the main tank in cleaving the Mus and the boss, before the second group of adds spawn.
      • If the Yan is still alive after the second group of adds spawn, the off-tank should continue tanking the Yan away from the Mus.
Wave 2 "Cleavemaxxing" Strategy
One Feather Ray north-west and north-east,
two Mus south.
A caster will take the north-west Feather Ray, and a healer will take the north-east Feather Ray.
  • The main tank will group up all of the Mus and the boss on top of the north-east Feather Ray.
    • This should be during a two-minute burst window, which should leave the Feather Ray and Mus at low health, if not defeated.
  • Once the north-east Feather Ray is defeated, the main tank will continue dragging the Mus and the boss onto the north-western Feather Ray.
Wave 3 "Cleavemaxxing" Strategy
One Yan north,
one Jabberwock west,
one Gimme Cat south.
The off-tank will establish aggro on the northern Yan, keeping it away from the Mus. Note that there is a longer delay before the Jabberwock can be targetted.
  • The healer who is targetted by the Jabberwock will go to the south-eastern corner, as far as they can.
    • Any unoccupied party members should prioritize the Jabberwock with single-target skills to defeat it as soon as possible.
    • To stun the Jabberwock, a tank should first use Low Blow Low Blow. A melee DPS should then use Leg Sweep Leg Sweep after.

During the third wave, the boss will cast Ready Ore Not, a raidwide.

  • The Mus will begin to enrage with a very hard-hitting raidwide of Oregato after the raidwide; they should be defeated. It also inflicts a potent DoT.

After the Jabberwock and Mus are defeated, the party should focus on the Gimme Cat.

  • Remember that the off-tank is sustaining heavy damage from the Yan; cycling mitigation is highly recommended, and healers should keep them healthy.
Wave 4 "Cleavemaxxing" Strategy
One Jabberwock and one Yan north,
one Feather Ray south-east and south-west,
one Gimme Cat and two Mus south.
The off-tank will establish aggro on the northern Yan, and bring both Yans south-east of the arena, on top of the Feather Ray there. The main tank will establish aggro on the Mus and bring them north to the Jabberwock.
  • Make sure the off-tank is out of the area to not strengthen the Yans. Additionally, remember that the off-tank is sustaining extremely heavy damage from both Yans; cycling mitigation is required, and healers should use GCD healing on the off-tank when necessary.
  • The healer who is targetted by the Jabberwock will go south, as far as they can.
  • The ranged DPS will tether onto a Feather Ray, and go south-bound with their puddles.

  • The party should focus down the Jabberwock first.
  • The main tank should bring the group of Mus to the south-eastern Feather Ray to defeat it.
  • After defeating the Feather Ray, the party should focus the Gimme Cat.
  • The main tank should keep the Mus away from the Yans when the party focuses down the other Feather Ray. The party should focus on the Mus after defeating the other Feather Ray, then finally the Yans.

Near the end of the final wave, the boss will cast Single Style, which creates arrows that create straight-line AoEs through the arena, similar to normal mode.

  • The party is rewarded with Limit Break Level 3 after the puddles from the Feather Rays dissipate, marking the end of the add phase.
  • If the adds are not defeated the next cast of Mousse Mural after a Color Riot, the boss will enrage.

Bridge Phase

Name Description
Double Style The boss will cast straight-line arrow AoEs, similar to Single Style before.
  • The boss will also cast thunder-spreads, or fire-stacks.
    • Thunder-spreads: point-blank AoEs on all players, dealing lightning damage. Is lethal if players are in the water.
    • Fire-stacks: light-party stacks, dealing fire damage. Is lethal if players are not in the water.
Name Description
Layer 1 The boss will cause the water to flood, making it unsafe. A large thundercloud, similar to normal mode, will spawn over a grassy section.
  • If players see a flash of lightning on their screen, it signifies a delayed AoE spawning underneath them. The large thundercloud will produce an extremely large AoE that will instantly kill anyone hit.
  • Random lightning AoEs will spawn over the ground, similar to normal mode.
  • Two players, one DPS and one support, will be marked with a lightning bolt at a time.
    • When they are struck while standing on a grassy section, the lightning will strike the entirety of the section section, only leaving the wooden bridges safe.
    • They are also hit with a medium point-blank AoE from the lightning strike itself.
    • Any players hit by the lightning from the marked players will be inflicted with Damage Down; the marked player will not be inflicted with it.

There will be four rounds of lightning strikes; every party member will need to perform the mechanic. There is 8 seconds between each lightning strike.

  • After the lightning strikes, the boss will cast Pudding Party, a multi-hit stack marker that will hit for five times with moderate damage.
Strategy The party will always go onto the bridge opposite of the big thundercloud.
  • Marked DPS players will go to the grassy section to the right of the bridge, facing the thundercloud.
  • Marked support players will go the grassy section to the left of the bridge, facing the thundercloud.
Name Description
Layer 2 The boss will replace the water with lava, destroying the bridges. Melee DPS players and the tanks will always go to the southern grassy section, while the group 1 ranged will go to the north-west grassy section, and the group 2 ranged will go to the north-east grassy section.
Mousse Drip Will target the furthest two players with stack markers. Will hit for four times, and leave a puddle.
  • Towers will also spawn, which must be soaked.
    • Four towers will always spawn on the southern grassy area. This is why all tanks and melee are south.
    • Two towers will spawn on both of the northern grassy areas.
Moussacre Thin conal AoEs aimed at the four closest players.
Strategy Ranged Players:

  • One of the ranged player from each grassy platform should go north. This is to properly bait both stack markers.

  • Once the stack markers are baited, the other ranged player will join the stack, and place all four puddles from each hit of the stack outside of the towers.
  • After all four puddles are placed, wait outside of the tower for the screen to flash with lightning to bait the AoE. Players can soak the towers after baiting the AoE.

Melee Players:

  • Loosely spread south of the boss to not clip any ranged player with Moussacre.
  • Wait outside of the tower for the screen to flash with lightning to bait the AoE. Players can soak the towers after baiting the AoE.
Name Description
Wingmark The boss will place a 10-second Wingmark debuff on every player.
  • Towers will spawn, and there are two different variations on what layout they spawn in:
    • Four towers on one grassy section, with two towers on each of the remaining sections.
    • All towers on the southern grassy section.
  • Players will be flung about the distance slightly less of the length of the arena once Wingmark expires; extra caution should be taken to not be flung into the death wall when resolving the mechanic.
  • The screen will flash with lightning one last time, shortly before soaking the towers again.
Strategy: four towers Identify which section has four towers.

  • Note in what direction the tower placements have "rotated" (i.e. get flung to the section clockwise or counter-clockwise).
  • All melees and tanks should aim to be flung onto the section with four towers; the direction of rotation is based on which way the melee players travel in.
  • Remember to bait the lightning AoE outside of the tower before soaking it.
Strategy: all towers All ranged players should aim to be flung onto the southern platform. They should soak the towers further away from the boss for melee uptime.
  • All melee players should go to one end of the arena to be flung horizontally across the section, but remain on the platform.
  • Remember to bait the lightning AoE outside of the tower before soaking it.

Finale

  • After a Mousse Mural raidwide, the boss will cast Sticky Mousse and a set of Color Clash mechanics again; resolve in the same way.
  • Afterwards, the boss will enrage with Artistic Anarchy.

Trivia

  • The enemies in the adds phase are references to various friendly monsters from FFIX. These enemies request various items from the party.
    • The Mu requests Ore. In this encounter, its enrage, Ore-rigato, is a pun on "Ore" and "arigato" (thank you in Japanese). Sugar Riot will cast an ore-themed raidwide attack (Ready Ore Not) prior.
    • The Jabberwock is also a reference to the classic "Jabberwocky" poem by Lewis Carroll. Its attacks, Manxome Windersnatch (the binding attack aimed at a healer) and Slayous Snicker-snack (the instant-death attack when it reaches its healer target) reference various nonsense words originally from the poem.
    • The Yan hitting the hardest of all of the adds is based on the friendly Yan becoming one of the game's most difficult encounters if the player decides to attack it.
    • The Feather Circle (Feather Ray in this encounter) creating puddles is based on the Trouble status inflicted by enemy Feather Circles, which would cause damage dealt to the afflicted party member to be spread to other party members. The boss Feather Ray in The Skydeep Cenote shares this reference.
    • The Gimme Cat, meanwhile, merely pretends to be one of the friendly monsters and asks for a Diamond. If the player gives it one, the cat flees without giving anything back to the party. If attacked, the Gimme Cat retaliates with the Comet spell, referenced here as the Hangry Hiss attack it uses if not defeated quickly enough.
  • This encounter arguably featured the first adds phase in a modern (Stormblood onwards) savage encounter that requires significant AoE damage optimization, crowd control, and target prioritization, making it a point of difficulty for many players.
  • On May 5, 2025, the encounter was cleared by the Lucrezia raid team with no tanks.
