Phantom Job

Phantom Jobs are a major gameplay system within the Occult Crescent field operations series. By equipping a phantom job, players will gain access to additional actions and traits to enhance the gameplay of their primary job.
Players can also level up phantom jobs to unlock more actions and traits. The level cap varies by job. Similar to regular jobs, each phantom job is leveled up separately. Phantom job levels are separate from the global knowledge level in Occult Crescent, which is shared between all the player's jobs.
Phantom job EXP is also a separate resource from
knowledge.
Up to five phantom job actions can be assigned on the duty action toolbar. Only one action can be keybound at a time, but the active action can be cycled through using a scroll button. Phantom job actions can also be assigned to a regular hotbar (via Actions & Traits > Duties).
These jobs are directly based on Final Fantasy V jobs, including some that are existing FFXIV jobs (e.g. monk, bard) and others that were not suitable for implementation as a full job in FFXIV (e.g. chemist). However, this does not necessarily rule out the possibility that some jobs may receive a full implementation in the future.
There are 24 phantom jobs available. 13 jobs were available on release of Occult Crescent, including the default
Phantom Freelancer. Three additional jobs were implemented in patch 7.4. The remaining eight jobs were implemented in 7.55 along with the second major installment of Occult Crescent content.
List of Phantom Jobs
Patch 7.25 and patch 7.4 jobs are acquired from South Horn, while patch 7.55 jobs are acquired from North Horn.

*3 FATEs are worth 1 CE.
†Only accessible after completing the Occult Reunion quest, which requires completing all previous quests in South Horn first. Completing The Forked Tower: Magic gives 4 CEs worth of EXP.
Freelancer levels up with each phantom job mastered instead of gaining experience by traditional means. The level cap is 24.
Phantom jobs available with North Horn require more EXP to level compared to South Horn jobs, but North Horn activities also reward more EXP, which can also be used to catch up with leveling South Horn jobs.
Phantom Job Actions
Phantom job actions may be modified by traits on the respective job and the player's normal job, if applicable. For example, Divine Magic Mastery on
paladin will halve the MP cost of Occult Heal. Phantom job actions cannot deal critical or direct hit damage and are unaffected by critical or direct hit rate-increasing buffs such as Battle Litany. Main stat-increasing potions or resurrection debuffs such as Weakness also do not affect phantom action damage.
Phantom job action damage can be increased by the following:[1][2]
- Equipping Arcanaut's Armor or its upgrades, Phantom Vision Armor or its upgrades, along with Occult Accessories, will provide Special Attribute. Each point of Special Attribute increases phantom job action damage by 1% additive. For example, having a full set of Phantom Vision Armor +3 and Occult Accessories will provide +26 Special Attribute, corresponding to a 26% increase in phantom action damage.
- Each time the player masters a phantom job (i.e. reaches their level cap), they will gain a stack of
Phantom Mastery, permanently increasing their damage dealt and healing potency within Occult Crescent zones, regardless of which phantom job they have equipped. Each stack provides a 2% additive increase in damage from all of their attacks.[3] Phantom Mastery caps at 24 stacks (48% damage increase). - Damage-increasing traits such as Enochian (magic actions only) or action effects such as Darkside from Edge of Shadow.
- These effects are multiplicative with Phantom Mastery. For example, a buff that increases damage by 10% combined with 12 stacks of Phantom Mastery would be augmented by 1.1 * 1.24 = 1.364 times the base damage.
- Percentage damage-increasing buffs such as Riddle of Fire and Searing Light. This means that jobs with strong self-buffs will be the most potent users of phantom job attacks. Perhaps the most notable example is
dragoon, which has three personal percentage damage buffs that can be aligned.
The potency listed in phantom job action tooltips is scaled differently from potency listed in regular action tooltips. Phantom job action damage only scales with item level (IL) to a maximum of IL 700 (equivalent to the IL sync within Occult Crescent zones). At IL 700, one point of phantom job damage potency is approximately equivalent to 6 points of normal PvE job damage potency.
Like regular job actions, phantom job actions listed as weaponskills are affected by skill speed, and those listed as spells are affected by spell speed. Generalized haste effects such as Army's Paeon interact with weaponskill or spell phantom job actions as appropriate.
Knowledge Crystals

Some phantom job actions grant additional effects when executed in proximity of a knowledge crystal, found near aetherytes in Occult Crescent or before encounters in the Forked Tower. These effects will be given to all members in the player's party regardless of their distance from a knowledge crystal, and last for 30 minutes.
- Pray ( Enduring Fortitude): Reduces target's damage taken by 10%
- Counterstance ( Fleetfooted): Increases movement speed
- Romeo's Ballad ( Romeo's Ballad): Increases Phantom EXP earned through battle (i.e. chainable overworld enemies) by 10%
- Quickstep ( Quickstep): Increases damage dealt by 2%
These effects also persist upon changing phantom jobs, so a solo player can still obtain all 4 buffs at the same time. The level 15
Phantom Freelancer action Inquiring Mind allows for the application of all 4 buffs without needing to change to the individual jobs, assuming they are sufficiently leveled.
Elemental Damage
Introduced in patch 7.55, enemies and bosses within the Occult Crescent have weaknesses to certain elemental phantom job actions, dealing 1.3 times the normal damage. Weaknesses can be revealed to all participants in a battle by using the
Phantom Red Mage action Occult Libra, which will display a debuff on the enemy. The Libra debuff on enemies also further enhances damage taken to 1.4 times for elemental attacks hitting a weakness.
Six phantom jobs unlocked from the North Horn have elemental damage actions that will deal increased damage to enemies with the appropriate elemental weakness. The potencies with or without the elemental weakness are listed in the tooltips for those actions.
Elemental weaknesses only apply to phantom job actions dealing elemental damage, not regular job actions. For example, a pictomancer's Fire in Red will not deal extra damage to an enemy weak to fire.
Elemental weaknesses were retroactively added to enemies in the South Horn and the Forked Tower: Blood.
Leveling Guide
Phantom jobs earn experience by defeating overworld (chainable) enemies, completing FATEs, Critical Encounters (CEs), and Occult Crescent-related weekly Challenge Log objectives. Players may only earn EXP on the job they currently have equipped. EXP provided by chainable enemies varies depending on the difference of the player's current knowledge level with the enemies, with stronger enemies providing more EXP. The other activities provide fixed EXP amounts. North Horn FATEs and CEs provide 50% more phantom job EXP than South Horn encounters, so North Horn should be primary leveling zone. Although CEs provide 3 times more EXP than FATEs, depending on how quickly on average CEs are killed, it may be faster to skip CEs entirely and focus on FATEs.
Completing the normal-difficulty The Forked Tower: Magic is a good means of leveling phantom jobs because it provides four North Horn CEs worth of EXP, among other rewards. Phantom job EXP is only awarded after defeating the final boss, and players may freely switch jobs outside of combat, so players are free to use any maximum leveled jobs prior to that to expedite the run.
Earning EXP from chaining sufficiently high-level enemies, particularly level 48 enemies in
Enlightenment Gold Obol farming ("gold farming") parties, is a significantly faster means of leveling. This method relies on tanks to mass pull the level 47-48 enemies at the subterrane region of the North Horn map while the rest of the party quickly dispatches the enemies with strong phantom job AoEs (e.g.
Phantom Cannoneer). Some parties allow around 1-2 players at a time to equip any phantom job for leveling while the other players are level capped jobs. A full guide is provided here.
Finally, South Horn jobs require less EXP to level than North Horn jobs, so players who wish to accumulate Phantom Mastery stacks faster should focus on leveling South Horn jobs first.
Lore
During the course of the expedition, the Archive uncovered crystalline objects containing the distilled knowledge of ancient martial methods. Known as "soul shards," these fragments allow the bearer to wield an array of long-forgotten techniques. According to the scholar-turned-tonberry, the crystals will cease to function upon leaving the Occult Crescent, thus limiting their efficacy to the isle. Nonetheless, they should prove a boon when dealing with its more combative fauna.
— Occult Record: Phantom Jobs
Phantom jobs are described by the Archive as ancient methods of combat originating in the Fifth Astral Era. Upon the player character's discovery of a crystal tied to that era, the Archive is able to recall long-sealed knowledge and identifies the object as a soul shard. Within it lies a phantasmal record of arcane and martial disciplines developed by the twelve city-states of the time.
Although the Archive acknowledges that modern combat techniques have grown more refined, he encourages the study of these forgotten arts for their historical and practical value. He expresses frustration at his own inability to access the shard's power, hindered by arcane seals that prevent him from fully engaging with the knowledge contained within the soul shard.[4]
Trivia
- All phantom jobs are directly based on Final Fantasy V jobs. The sprite artwork for each job is Bartz Klauser as the respective job.
- The only jobs from Final Fantasy V not represented as phantom jobs are Mime and Beastmaster.
- Phantom jobs are the Occult Crescent replacement for Logos Actions in The Forbidden Land, Eureka and Lost Actions in Save the Queen: Blades of Gunnhildr, being a feature that allows players to customize their job's combat playstyle beyond what is found in their base job actions and traits.
