For this exercise, you'll be learning avoidance! An enemy often tips his hands before a big attack, and your best defense is to skip out of the way! You pass this exercise once I decide you've learned this lesson.

— In-game description

DPS Training - Exercise 1: Avoid Area of Effect Attacks is a level 15 Hall of the Novice exercise introduced in patch 3.2 with Heavensward.

General Information

  • This training exercise is the first in a series of seven for the DPS role in Hall of the Novice, which becomes available when you unlock dungeons and the duty finder.
  • Avoiding Area of Effect Attacks is shared through all of the roles, which means that if it has been completed on a DPS role, the tank role will need to choose that specific exercise from “completed exercises” to repeat it for that specific role.
  • Success in this training exercise is based on whether you are still alive by the end of all of the rounds of attacks. The exercise will begin with attacks from an axe-wielding training partner, then switch to a staff-waving training partner, then finally engaging both, including a specific circumstance where you need to wait for a hold spell to end before you run out of the area of effect attack. Once those attacks are completed and you are still standing by the end, you have finished.
  • You fail this exercise when you die, and the duty returns you to the beginning to retry the exercise.
