— In-game description

Tactical Training - Exercise 1: React to Attack Markers is a level 49 Hall of the Novice exercise introduced in patch 7.1 with Dawntrail.

General Information

The exercise is split into 5 sections. The first four sections are each an explanation of how a specific marker or other mechanic works, and then an exercise where you must properly handle that mechanic the same way you would during a combat Duty. The fifth section is a series of exercises in quick sucession where you must successfully handle multiple mechanics at once. There will be 3 NPCs representing your party members whose roles will adapt based on your own (to form a light party of 1 tank, 1 healer, and 2 dps) with whom you must work together to minimize incoming damage and thereby handle the mechanics correctly.

First 4 Exercises

  1. AoE (Area of Effect) markers – Everyone will be marked with an AoE Marker, avoid overlapping your marker with any of your party members'.
  2. Stack marker – One of your allies with be marked with a stack marker, stand near them.
  3. Cleaving tankbuster marker – The tank will be marked with a cleaving tankbuster marker, if you are the tank, position yourself away from your allies so none of them are hit. If you are not the tank, position yourself away from the tank so you are not hit. (The attack is a straight line AoE from the enemy who casts the spell in the direction of the tank)
  4. Homing AoE marker – You will be marked with a homing AoE marker, run around to avoid being hit by the homing AoEs while also staying away from your your allies to ensure they are not hit by them.

Final Challenge

  1. Everyone will be marked with AoE markers, and there will be a donut AoE, followed by a circular AoE – Stay away from your allies and stand at the edge of the donut AoE. Once it is gone, move into where it was to avoid the circular AoE.
  2. One of your allies will be marked with a stack marker, and there will be two large circular AoEs with two safe spots – Follow your allies to the same safe spot they go to to avoid the AoEs and absorb the stack marker damage.
  3. The tank will be marked with a cleaving tankbuster marker, and there will be two large donut AoEs with two safe spots – If you are the tank, avoid your allies and go to the safe spot they do not go to. If you are not the tank, avoid the safe spot the tank goes to, and go to the safe spot your other allies go to.
  4. Everyone will be marked with homing AoE markers – Stay away from your allies while dodging the homing AoEs. Running clockwise around the arena or going to the middle and running back and forth are two ways of accomplishing this.

Welcome, Master/Mistress Surname. In this training exercise, we will have you carry out a variety of common evasive maneuvers.
My agent here will serve as your opponent. Try to get a sense for her oncoming attacks, and handle them accordingly.
Take your starting position when you are ready to begin.
As you doubtless know, no few magicks strike a wide radius around a given target. The marker of such an attack will often look like this...
If you sense that you've been marked, you'd do well to move away from your allies so that they aren't caught in the blast.
The danger is greater still if an ally is targeted at the same time. Stand too close to one another, and you will suffer double the impact!

Our next exercise features a strike so powerful, it cannot be endured alone. Allow me to demonstrate its marker...
Should the enemy perform such an attack, you and your allies must stand together in order to weather it.
Upon sensing this marker, locate its target and make your way there as quick as you can!

Endure the attack alongside your allies!
Bravo, Master/Mistress Surname!
Among you adventurers, I'm given to understand that these are known as “stack markers.” Rings odd to my ear, but I suppose it matters not.
To start the next exercise, take your starting position.
Next, we will look at a lethal variety of attack that none but a tank can handle. Behold its marker...
Remember, only the tank is equipped to survive a blow of this magnitude. Any other caught in its blast won't be left standing.
Now for a proper demonstration. Everyone, position yourselves so that the tank may shield against this strike alone!

Ensure that only the tank is struck!
Bravo, Master/Mistress Surname!
These attacks pack quite a punch. Should it fall to you to deal with it, you'd do well to employ what abilities you have to lighten the damage.
To start the next exercise, take your starting position.
Next, let us practice how to handle a more persistent threat. Take note of this marker...
What will follow is a chain of attacks that chase you doggedly. You must stay on the move, all the while keeping away from your allies.

Now that you've learned the basics, it's time to put your knowledge to the test. Overcome this final challenge, and your training will be complete!
We will now begin the final challenge. Once you are prepared, take your starting position.
Allow me to test all that you have learned thus far.
In this exercise, you will face a slew of different attacks, each of which you must deal with appropriately to minimize the harm you sustain.
