— In-game description

Tactical Training - Exercise 2: React to Floor Markers is a level 49 Hall of the Novice exercise introduced in patch 7.1 with Dawntrail.

General Information

The exercise is split into 6 sections. The first five sections are each an explanation of how a specific marker or other mechanic works, and then an exercise where you must properly handle that mechanic the same way you would during a combat Duty. The sixth section is a series of exercises in quick sucession where you must successfully handle multiple mechanics at once. There will be 3 NPCs representing your party members whose roles will adapt based on your own (to form a light party of 1 tank, 1 healer, and 2 dps) with whom you must work together to minimize incoming damage and thereby handle the mechanics correctly.

First 5 Exercises

  1. Knockback marker – A knockback marker will appear in the center of the arena, and a persistent damaging ring will appear around the edge of the arena. Stand near the center of the knockback marker to avoid being knocked into the damaging ring.
  2. AoE (Area of Effect) knockback marker – An AoE knockback marker will appear in the center of the arena, with the same damaging ring around the edge of the arena as the previous exercise. Stand near the edge of the AoE knockback marker to avoid being hit by it or being knocked into the damaging ring.
  3. Flare marker – A flare marker will appear in the center of the arena, move to the edge of the arena to minimize the damage it deals.
  4. Tower marker – Four tower markers will appear, stand in the one that none of your allies stand in.
  5. Tower marker (different appearance) – Just like the previous exercise, four tower markers will appear, stand in the one that none of your allies stand in.

Final Challenge

  1. A persistent damaging ring will appear around the edge of the arena, three circular aoes will appear on one side of the arena, and a knockback marker will appear in the center – Stand near the center of the knockback marker, but positioned so that you are knocked in the opposite direction of the circular AoEs rather than towards them.
  2. The damaging ring from the previous exercise persists, and an AoE knockback marker will appear near the edge of the arena, alongside 4 tower markers – Stand near the edge of the AoE knockback marker so that you are knocked toward the center of the arena, then move into the tower marker that your allies do not move into.
  3. Two flare markers will appear on two sides of the arena – Move to a side of the arena where you are as far away as possible from both markers (All the way west or all the way east).
  4. Four tower markers will appear, and one half of the arena will be hit by a semicircle AoE, followed by the other half. Move into the tower marker that none of your allies move into, and stay in it while avoiding the semicircle AoEs. The AoEs both only hit half of the tower, so you can remain inside the tower the whole time.

Welcome, Master/Mistress Surname. In this training exercise, we will have you carry out a medley of cutting-edge tactical maneuvers.
My agent here will serve as your opponent. Try to get a sense for her oncoming attacks, and handle them accordingly.
Take your starting position when you are ready to begin.
First, let's discuss knockback attacks. The marker will look like this...
As soon as you sense it, you will have but a few moments to position yourself before you are pushed a set distance from its point of impact.
For this exercise, I have placed a ring of lightning aether around the arena. Your goal is to position yourself such that you won't be sent hurtling into it!

Withstand the knockback without touching the lightning!
Bravo, Master/Mistress Surname!
To start the next exercise, take your starting position.
While we're at it, let's review a common variant. Take note of this marker...
Unlike last time, I don't recommend you stand directly in the center of it, lest you receive a most painful blow to the skull.
And so, once more, I challenge you to avoid being flung into the lightning. Where will you stand this time?

Withstand the knockback without touching the floor marker!
Bravo, Master/Mistress Surname!
To start the next exercise, take your starting position.
Next, we'll demonstrate a proximity attack. Its marker pulses outward, like so...
With these, the closer you are to its point of impact, the greater the damage you stand to take.
Thus, whenever you see that ominous light pulsing along the ground, I advise you to distance yourself as much as possible.

Retreat as far from the attack as you can!
Bravo, Master/Mistress Surname!
Barely a scratch, eh? Sometimes the simplest solution is to get the hells out of there, so to speak.
To start the next exercise, take your starting position.
Next, let's move on to tower tactics! This type of attack is one that must be endured rather than avoided.
See the tower marker? If no one stands inside to weaken its impact, the entire party will suffer a devastating blow.
Therefore, one person must volunteer to take the tower, shielding the rest of the party from far greater casualties.

Occupy a tower to minimize damage!
Bravo, Master/Mistress Surname!
To start the next exercise, take your starting position.
Now let's cover a variant of the tower marker. Again, one of you will need to stand inside to protect the others.
Lest you forget, if the tower goes unoccupied, the entire party will pay the price.
In this case, you must ensure you are standing within the bounds of the circle before the arcane orb strikes the ground.

Spectacular work! With that, your basic training is complete. Now, come and speak with me if you'd like to attempt my final challenge!
Now that you've learned the basics, it's time to put your knowledge to the test. Overcome this final challenge, and your training will be complete!
We will now begin the final challenge. Once you are prepared, take your starting position.
Allow me to test all that you have learned thus far.
In this exercise, you will face a slew of different attacks, each of which you must deal with appropriately to minimize the harm you sustain.

Survive all of the attacks!
Your grasp of combat tactics is commendable indeed, Master/Mistress Surname.
Masterfully judged! You handled that flawlessly.
Precisely what I had hoped to see!
I'm pleased you took the lesson to heart.
You handled every last threat with finesse. It is with pleasure that I declare you have passed the challenge!
