Arcanist

Adepts of the art of arcanum derive their might from symbols of power born of geometric techniques hailing from across the southern seas. Held within occult grimoires, these symbols lend shape to the arcanist's aether, thereby allowing him to produce myriad powerful spells.
Using the selfsame symbols to unlock the latent power contained within gemstones, arcanists are also able to summon forth the familiar known as Carbuncle to carry out their bidding.

Arcanist (ACN) is one of six starting DPS classes and one of two starting Magical Ranged DPS. It directly upgrades to Summoner at level 30 but may also specialize to Scholar, a Healer. This was the only new class added at the release of A Realm Reborn.

General information

Guild

The Arcanists' Guild is in the maritime city of Limsa Lominsa. If you choose arcanist as your first class, you will start off in the city of Limsa Lominsa. At level 30, arcanists must specialize into either summoner or scholar.

Equipment

The arcanist is a disciple of magic and wears armor "of Casting." They use grimoires as weapons. The following crafting classes can create items that are useful to the arcanist:

Alchemist — Grimoires.
Weaver — Casting armor.
Goldsmith — Earrings, bracelets, necklaces and rings.

Jobs

The arcanist is a rather unique class in that they must specialize into either one of two jobs:

SMN - a DPS job.
SCH - a healing job.

Core mechanics

Arcanists have a summoned pet called a carbuncle that accompanies them and can be ordered to give them a shield. They use Aethercharge to empower their spells. After it expires, they unlock the ability to summon various other pets to assist them. These pets empower the Arcanist in a cycle, with one of each pet usable after each use of Aethercharge before another Aethercharge is required.

Summon Carbuncle - Summons Carbuncle to your side.
Aethercharge - Grants Aethercharge, increasing the potency of Ruin, Ruin II, and Ruin III by 50, and Outburst by 20.
Summon Ruby - Summons Ruby Carbuncle, and orders it to execute Glittering Ruby.
Summon Topaz - Summons Topaz Carbuncle, and orders it to execute Glittering Topaz.
Summon Emerald - Summons Emerald Carbuncle, and orders it to execute Glittering Emerald.
Gemshine - Channel the energies of your active elemental attunement to attack your enemy.
Precious Brilliance - Channel the energies of your active elemental attunement to attack multiple enemies.

Every time the arcanist uses aethercharge, they can then cast Summon Ruby, Summon Topaz, and Summon Emerald once each. These pets empower the arcanist's Gemshine and Precious Brilliance, with each giving a different effect compared to regular Ruin and Outburst. They also have Energy Drain, which adds to their Aetherflow gauge. They may then consume stacks from this gauge to cast certain abilities, some of which change as the class develops into one of the available jobs – summoner and scholar.
