Ambitious Lure
Ambitious Lure
Attracts fish with large jaws and increases your chances of landing one. Occasionally guarantees you will land a large-jawed fish.
Can be used up to 3 times while fishing, each use increasing the effectiveness and GP cost.
May also attract rare species of fish. Can also be used with fish caught using Powerful Hookset.
First Use: 10 GP
Second Use: 20 GP
Third Use: 30 GP— In-game description
Ambitious Lure is an action unlocked at level 100. It is available for Fisher.
Notes
Ambitious Lure affects fish that use the Powerful Hookset. Ambitious Lure is used after you cast your line and can be used up to 3 times per cast, granting a stack each time.
Each time you use Ambitious Lure you increase the likelihood of a Powerful Hookset fish biting (decreasing the odds of an Precision Hookset fish biting). Once you use Ambitous Lure, you cannot use Modest Lure (and vice-versa).
Additionally, each use of Ambitious Lure grants a small chance to receive the following message: "You have a feeling your next cast will land a large-jawed fish!". When this message appears, the next fish to bite will be one that uses the Powerful Hookset. Using Ambitious Lure again after this message appears will remove the effect.
Ambitious Lure cannot be used if:
- Identical Cast is active for the current cast.
- The current cast is a mooch.
Hidden fish
Some Dawntrail fish are "hidden" (unofficial name) and require use of Ambitious Lure to be available to catch (for that attempt). Further, certain fish require Ambitious Lure to be used at least 2 or 3 times for the special message to have a chance of appearing.
Once the special message appears for these fish, it will remain available to catch this cast (even if the Ambitious Lure is used again).

Rerolling
Each time a Lure action is used, the fish on the line (which is normally determined at the start of a cast) is re-determined (or "rerolled") at the point in time the lure was used.
Be warned that this means using a lure will discard any "snapshotted" conditions from the original cast.
- For example: if a fish's availability window is 00:00 - 04:00 Eorzea time, and the cast was done at 3:55, then the cast has a chance of being the target fish, even if it actually bites the line later than 04:00. However, if a lure is used at 04:02 Eorzea time, then the rerolled cast is no longer within the time window, and the target fish cannot appear.
- Similarly, if conditions such as Fish Eyes and Fisher's Intuition expire, but the cast continues, then those effects are still considered for the current cast. But if a lure is used after those effects expire, then they are not considered for the rerolled cast.
After a lure is used, a 5-second grace period is applied, during which no fish can bite. At the end of this period, if the new fish has a bite time before the total elapsed time, it will bite immediately. Otherwise, the new fish will bite at its usual time.
- For example: suppose Lure is used when 15s have elapsed during a cast. After a 5s grace period, a total of 20s have elapsed. If the new fish would have bitten at 13s, then it will bite immediately after the grace period ends, at 20s. If the new fish would have bitten at 27s, then it will not bite until a total of 27s have elapsed.
This reroll can be used for additional tries at a fish that has a short bite time, by using a lure after the end of the fish's possible bite range.
- For example: if a fish bites at 8s at the latest, then using a lure after 8s essentially grants another try at the fish, only having to wait 5s for the grace period instead of 8s for a whole new cast.
