— In-game description

Materia Extraction is an action unlocked by questing at level 19. It is available for any class or job.

Notes

Prior to Patch 5.2, getting materia from fully spiritbound gear resulted in the gear being totally lost, and the process was referred to as conversion. The language was changed to extraction to reflect that it is now non-destructive.

Materia was rarer and more expensive prior to this change, as in most cases it would not make sense to sacrifice gear to create materia.
