— Box description for Final Fantasy V on Nintendo DS

Setting

A millenium ago, a powerful mage called Enuo imperiled the world using the power of the "Void". The people defeated him by using twelve legendary weapons, but the Void was not destroyed. The worlds elemental crystals were split and created two worlds, with the Void being sealed in a dimensional cleft in-between.

Both world prospered until an evil force was stirring in the second world, since malicious demons have been sealed away in the Great Forest of Moore. Once they broke free, they emerged as Exdeath. He wanted to claim the world for himself, but was defeated by the Warriors of Dawn, sealing him within the first world by using its crystals, and brought back peace.

Story

Bartz encounters Lenna, Galuf and Faris, and together they persue King Tycoon - Lenna's father - who went to investigate why the wind crystal grows weaker. There they see the wind crystal shattered, receiving new powers. An image of King Tycoon appears and say that the crystals has chosen them as their protectors.

The party discovers that the crystals are making the world inhabitable and also seal away Exdeath. They try and attempt to safe the crystals of water, fire and earth, but each time they shatter and give them new powers. Exdeath is freed and defeat the party, returning to his homeworld.

Galuf's granddaughter Krile arrives and brings back his memories - he originated from the same world as Exdeath and all of them are travelling back home. On Galuf's World, Exdeath is already persuing the crystals. The party wins an encounter with Gilgamesh, but are blown away to a different continent. When travelling to the Moore Forest to protect the crystal there, Exdeath arrives and takes the crystal for himself. Krile is trapped by Exdeath' powers, but Galuf saves her and the others by sacrificing his own life. His powers and abilities are transferred to Krile, who joins the party. They travel to Exdeath' castle, where they defeat Gilgamesh and Exdeath as well. When the crystals shatter, the worlds are reunited.

The party returns to Tycoon and celebrate Exdeath' defeat. However, Exdeath manifests again. He has now full control of the Void, and wreaks havoc, tossing entire towns and kingdoms into an interdimensional rift.

The party now has access to powerful artificats, and once obtained they enter the rift. They find Exdeath at the center of the rift seeking the powers of the Void. The party fights Exdeath and then Neo Exdeath, whos intent is to destroy all reality. They defeat him and use the crystal shards' power to seal the Void once more and return to restore the reunified world and it's crystals.

They return to the Moore Forest and those that have fallen in battle are revived.
