Lore
From the dawn of the First Astral Era to the modern day, knives have ever enjoyed a place at man’s side, whether be it as a tool, utensil, or weapon. While its short blade has seen the knife relegated to a sidearm on the field of battle, the weapon is granted the opportunity to shine upon occasions when a certain modicum of stealth or subtlety is preferred to mere brute force. Knives can be concealed in sleeves or on ankles, their tips applied with all manner of poisons. Throats can be slit, sinew severed, arteries opened—all with the flick of a wrist, and all before the victim realizes his ill fate. Moreover, knives can be thrown with frightening accuracy to deliver fatal blows at a score paces or more.
There even exist orders of noble brigands—the rogues of Limsa Lominsa and the ninjas of Doma—who have mastered the secret of knife and dagger, turning the weapons’ shortcomings into a tactical advantage. By equipping blades in both hands their flurry of beats can prove deceptively fatal, bleeding an enemy dry before he has the opportunity to strike back. Unlike the sword or axe of clay which require brute strength to ply, even the slightest of Lalafell might find themselves on equal footing with larger foes should they carry with them the knowledge of the knife. One might go so far as to suggest that it is this accessibility that has seen the stout weapons’ popularity grow in recent years.
Prominent Designs
Knives
Knives can literally come in all shapes and sizes, and while most feature blades of metal or stone, there are some, like the example in the accompanying diagram, that are carved from the horns of fantastical beasts such as the behemoth.
Daggers
Though the blade is double-edged, it is the point of a dagger that one must fear. Many a knight clad in full plate has survived the blows of a thousand swords, only to fall to the thrust of a stiletto 'neath his pauldron.
Pugiones
Oft carried into battle as supplements to larger weapons, pugiones are crafted with overly thick blades to prevent shattering, They were also once widely used to grant injured comrades the mercy of a swift death—a necessity grown less common since the resurgence of white magicks.
Jambiyas
Both edges of the jambiya’s blade are razor-sharp—a quality not often seen in curved blades—allowing this weapon to be used not only like a knife, but like a hand sickle. There are several cultures along the Ilsabardian coast in which possession of a jambiya is an indicator of the completion of one’s journey into adulthood.
Tanto
Their name meaning literally “short katana,” the designs used to forge these Far Eastern knives are almost identical to those used to craft katana—the length of the blade and the degree of its curve being the only notable differences.
Vajras
Denizens of the Othardian mainland believe vajras to be divine instruments once wielded by the very gods themselves. As such, their use by mortals for purposes other than those indicated in divine scripture is highly frowned upon.
Vajras
Mastersmith Gerolt Blackthorn’s take on the traditional Far Eastern dagger, the vajras unique trifurcated blades act much like the head of a trident, allowing their wielder to ensnare his enemies' weapons and snap them with a twist of the wrist.
Belah’dian Cinquedea
From the aetherially conductive gold inlay, to the inverted Y shape of the blade, these antique daggers discovered amongst the Belah'dian ruins of southern Thanalan bear a striking similarity in both design and utility to those described in Mhachi tomes—the latter having been widely used in the Fifth Astral Era's War of the Magi.
Air Knives
Two of the most remarkable items to be discovered at Saint Coinach’s Find, these Allagan relics dating back to the Third Astral Era are constructed with an ultralight alloy that, according to the Lalafellin scholar who unearthed the blades, is “lighter than air.” As to the alloy’s makeup, however, modern metallurgists continue to remain baffled.
Halonic Vicar’s Main Gauches
Close-range combat can leave an attacker’s hands exposed to grave injury, rendering him unable to hold his weapon. To protect those of one wielding a main gauche, a knuckle-bow has been fitted to the dagger's jeweled grip. Toothlike serration on the base of the blade is used for both parrying attacks, as well as sawing flesh and bone.
High Allagan Cleavers
Shaped more like butchers’ blades than daggers, these brilliant sable cleavers are a vestige of an age long forgotten. The weapons appear to have been imbued with some manner of ancient Allagan magicks and will glow blood red when wielded—a reaction most likely triggered by the wielder’s flow of internal aether.
Nagi
Stolen from a temple where the blades—believed to be kami of the wind and rain—were worshipped for countless centuries, the scythe-like Nagi were finally recovered when discovered on the corpse of a kunoichi sent to Doma Castle to assassinate Lord Kaien.
Kards
Ala Mhigo’s most terrible of tyrants, mad king Theodoric, is said to have commissioned Eshtaime’s Lapidaries to craft this pair of bejeweled daggers for use in sacrificial rites. The gems fitted to the blade are positioned to absorb the lifeblood of a victim, adding to the weapon’s aetherial potency.
Ohojo
Much as the experienced farmer can shear the bough from a mighty oak with naught but a billhook, so, too, can a master of the Ohojo—blades designed especially for Doman shinobi—dissever the limbs of her opponent with a well-placed slash and pull.
Misericordes
Pride of Limsa Lominsa’s Naldiq & Vymelli’s, each misericorde consists of a pair of tempered blades attached to a polished grip via a complex system of gears. Using this mechanism, the blades can be folded back for storage or concealment. The gears, however, must be oiled regularly lest they jam upon the blades' release.
Sasuke's Blades
Legend has that these blades were used by the renowned shinobi Sasuke to deliver the people of Doma from the rule of a powerful tyrant—a deed that some believe earned him the title of Zodiac Brave. Since then, the exquisite daggers have remained with the ninja’s family, being passed down from generation to generation to those heirs deemed worthy. [1]
