Stethacanthus
The size of the growths on this stethacanthus indicate that it may be the oldest still in existence─and also why it has come to be known as the "Loch Seld monster."
[Suitable for printing on extra large canvases.]
— In-game description
Basic Information
- Recommended Fishing Level: 70
- Fish Type: Salt Lakes
- Aquarium Type: ????
- Sizes: Smallest - ??im, Largest - ??im
Description
Male stethacanthus vie for reproductive supremacy amongst their species by focusing internal aetherial energy to engender queer saline growths upon their dorsal fins — the size of which is the sole factor in the females' selection of a suitable mate. The crystals can swell to sizes so large that they oft render the wavekin completely motionless.
Acquisition
- Location: The Lochs (x21, y21)
- Hole Level: 70
- Baits: Mooch
- Mooched from: Rock Saltfish ( Silkworm)
- Condition: 4:00pm-5:59pm
- Weather: None
- Must catch 2x Sculptor first to get Fisher's Intuition
Strategy
Prep:
- Arrive before the Sculptor window opens. The goal is to collect 10 stacks of Angler's Art, and x3 Rock Saltfish (!! bite) stored as swimbait using Spareful Hand.
- When catching Rock Saltfish, optionally use Ambitious Lure once if nothing has bit after 22s, to reroll for another chance.
- Make sure that your Collector's Glove is toggled ON.
Catching two Sculptors:
- You want to use Double Hook on Sculptor to catch both at once. This means after mooching you reel in any !!! bite that appears after 23 seconds (the earliest Sculptor will bite).
- You want to avoid using Patience II so you can use Double Hook, as Sculptor is a rare bite.
- You can use a timer macro to count to 23 seconds to get a good idea of when to use Double Hook.
- Most !!! bites will be Pearl-eye. This is normal, just keep trying.
- When the Sculptor window opens, first use your 3 swimbait. After using the swimbait, use Mooch II (and Prize Catch when Mooch II is on cooldown), ONLY reeling in !! bites. When needing to recover GP, you can use Makeshift Bait to guarantee all fish can be Mooched for a while.
- When you do catch Sculptor, DO NOT INTERACT with the collection pop-up. By instead leaving it open, you can hold your 2 Sculptors until the Stethacanthus window opens. This is the main reason Collector's Glove must be on.
- Optionally, wait a full Eorzean day (70 minutes) for GP to regen to full before Stethacanthus' window opens. This works because Stethacanthus only has a time-of-day requirement, unlike Sculptor which has both a time and weather requirement.
Catching Stethacanthus:
- When Stethacanthus' window opens, click NO on the collection pop-up window. This will put x2 of the fish in your inventory and activate Fisher's Intuition (5m50s). If you mistakenly select yes, then even if you used Double Hook it will only give you 1 of the fish and not activate fisher's intuition.
- If you took the option of waiting a day for GP to regen, quickly Quit, run a few yalms away, and then cast your line again to reset the 50-minute "the fish sense something amiss" effect.
- Stethacanthus is also mooched off of Rock Saltfish, so using Mooch II, Prize Catch, Makeshift Bait (if you still have Angler's Art left), and potentially Patience II to guarantee large/moochable fish.
- Stethacanthus can be any !!! bite before 30 seconds after mooching.
