  • Now that you've recovered, Lucia would have a word with you.
  • As you recount what befell you whilst Zenos was occupying your body, it becomes clear to those present that both the primal Anima and the Telophoroi are based in the Tower of Babil─as suspected─so it is there that you must go to confront them. Fortunately, contingent scouts have identified a viable route of ingress, and Lucia has a plan of attack already prepared. While others create a diversion above ground, you are to slip into the tower via an underground tunnel alongside the Scions and some few allies.
  • Your meeting with Lyse and company at Forum Patens to review your roles in the coming operation proceeds smoothly, with no more than the usual amount of bickering amongst the Azim Steppe delegation. So as not to attract attention, the group will need to travel separately until you reach the Enceladeum, where the entrance to the tunnel can be found.
  • Pipin greets you at the Enceladeum, unaware of the details of your possession but nevertheless pleased to see you recovered enough to take part in the battle to come. He directs you to the representative from Lente's Tears who will serve as your guide to the underground station, promising to send your other comrades along when they arrive.
  • You enter the underground station, where you are soon joined by your remaining comrades. A ruckus can be heard from above ground─your cue to board the train and infiltrate the Tower of Babil.
    • ※To enlist your companion NPCs for this duty, speak with them near the entrance or access Duty Support via the main menu. Use the Duty Finder if you wish to complete the instance alongside fellow players.
  • Fighting past tempered soldiers and all manner of monstrosities, you succeed in breaching the top of the tower, where you come face-to-face with the terrifying primal known as Anima. Demonstrating your might is more fearsome than any would-be god of empire, you succeed in putting the soul of His Radiance, Varis zos Galvus, to rest at last. Now nothing stands between you and the long-awaited confrontation with the Telophoroi's commanders.
  • Though you catch Zenos and Fandaniel in the act, they have already harnessed much of the tower's aether and nearly succeeded in freeing Zodiark from His imprisonment. Suddenly, Krile appears, her body acting as a conduit for Hydaelyn, who is able to preserve the remaining shackles that bind Her ancient foe. For a moment, it appears that Fandaniel's plan has failed when the last of the tower's aether is exhausted, but he quickly changes tack and teleports himself and Zenos to the moon, that they might destroy the protective barrier in person. As a parting gift, they reveal that Anima, as its final act, issued an order to the tempered throughout Garlemald to fight unto their dying breath, and this diversion is enough to allow the Telophoroi to utilize their gate and make their escape. For a mercy, Hydaelyn manages to divert their aether current far from their destination, giving you a chance to travel to the moon yourself and forestall Zodiark's release.
  • Alphinaud and the other Scions vow to prevent the situation in Garlemald from escalating and spare the tempered a terrible fate. Meanwhile, you alone must pursue the Telophoroi to the moon, and stop them ere it is too late.

Dialogue

Optional dialogue
...I suppose your experience was a bit different, though. Unlike you, I had the pleasure of being stuck with Lahabrea while he went gallivanting about doing a poor impression of me. It adds another layer to the insult, believe you me.
Hm, yes...'tis still you...
My apologies─I realized too late that the aether emanating from the tower was distorting my perception. 'Twas likely a temporary effect, but I remain wary.
So, how shall we strike them down?
I realize that my sister is...eager to proceed, but please be sure that you've fully recovered before you throw caution to the wind.
Full glad am I to see thee awake and restored to thine own flesh once more.
Whatever that was, let's not do it again, eh?
Thank heavens you're you again. Gave me quite a fright.
The body that you were forced to inhabit turned cold and stiff the moment you were returned to your own. Perhaps the soul it belonged to is long gone...
Let us pray it is so, for I doubt it would be better off in the care of Zenos or Fandaniel.

Accepting the quest

Are you well enough to make your report?
Start of cutscene.

The player apprises everyone of the previous events with Zenos and Fandaniel.

This “Anima” was summoned with the corpse of Emperor Varis? Does their depravity know no bounds?
It seems not. More to the point, we can surmise that wave of aether issued not from the Tower of Babil, but from the primal lurking within it...
A primal whose cry rang rather more loudly in your ears than ours.
If you were taken to the tower itself, then this proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that it is the beating heart of the Telophoroi's machinations.
In which case, we have some highly relevant information.
As many of you know, ever since we dispatched troops to free the Leveilleurs, we've been developing a plan to infiltrate the tower.
According to Thancred and his scouts, the main structure is lousy with tempered and enemy magitek.
Furthermore, the road leading to it has collapsed, making it difficult to approach in numbers.
Thus do we propose dividing our forces into two parties ─ one to distract, and one to infiltrate.
The diversionary force will be comprised of the Ishgardian, Gridanian, and Lominsan delegations.
They will begin the construction of bridges, to make the Telophoroi believe we are marching upon the tower.
Meanwhile, the best suited of our Ala Mhigan, Ul'dahn, and Eastern comrades will use a different method of ingress.
Look here.
The facility marked in red is the Enceladeum, a vast magitek manufactory. In ruins now, of course.
But the freight tunnel connecting it to the erstwhile imperial palace remains intact.
While the Telophoroi's attention is elsewhere, our infiltration force can use it to enter the tower undetected.
Be aware, however, that the underground rail network remains very much operational.
The tempered are using it to bring supplies to the tower even now.
...If it can carry their materiel, it can carry us too, providing we sneak aboard unseen.
The Scions will lead the infiltration party. Once inside, you must locate and dispatch Fandaniel and Zenos.
What will you say?
We will save the people of Garlemald - and those who suffer the world over.
Aye. Jullus and so many others have lost much to the Telophoroi. We shall ensure they lose no more.
I'll have my vengeance yet.
We'll get our fill ─ you and me both.
It's time we ended this, once and for all.
Aye. There will be no more casualties of the Telophoroi's maniacal ambition
How quickly can we enact this plan?
Fandaniel made it quite clear that haste is a priority.
Of paramount concern, even, assuming he didn't name the tower “Babil” on a whim.
In Amon's time, it meant “gateway of the gods.” Xande used it to refer to a voidgate, but in this case, it almost certainly alludes to something altogether greater...
...The eldest and most powerful of primals.
All the more reason to act now. The rest of the contingent is aware of the plan, and are ready to move at a moment's notice.
You are to proceed north to Forum Patens. Lyse's group will meet you there.
As ever, we are grateful for your foresight.
This is the moment we've been waiting for. Spare no effort in your preparations.
End of cutscene.
Optional dialogue
Lyse's party ought to have secured the tunnel by now. Rendezvous with them and make your way inside.
May the Fury guide you...and us all.
Those not taking part in the assault will defend this camp and the airships, as well as safeguard your escape route from the tower.
You need not worry about what comes after ─ so fight with all you have.
All right, you lot! When we get the signal, we'll make the loudest racket Garlemald's ever heard!
The time has come for me to head to the front line.
You see, with so many healers needed to treat the tempered, our allies want for support on the battlefield. That's where I come in.
Though I wish we could share all of our provisions with the refugees, we have to plan ahead. We'll be in no position to help anyone if we starve to death.
Ah, you've finally come around! From what I gather, you'd been through rather a lot, what with your sudden disappearance. Then, even when you did return, there was some sort of fracas, it seems. Someone did explain it to me, but I must admit, I found the whole account positively mind-boggling.
And once again, your timing is impeccable. Why, you've recovered just in time to join the foray into the enemy stronghold. I do hope you're feeling up to it!
Many of the Garlean refugees are refusing to be treated with magic. While I can sympathize with that to a degree, there is a limit to what we can do with basic medicines and bandages. At this rate, there'll be none left.
The imperial refugees look like they've seen better days. Hardly surprising considering they've been living on scraps for gods know how long.
Pray return to us victorious and with deeds that will make all of us proud.
The Sun does not sneak. ...However, he will travel this path of yours, and those who walk with him will bask in his radiance.
<sneeze> Damn these frigid lands. <snort>
I am to accompany you into the tower. It is an honor, as ever!

Additional NPCs will be interactable and have optional dialogue depending on the player's progress through various class/job quests and other side stories:

Optional dialogue
If dragoon is unlocked
The time is upon us. Neither you nor Estinien will break under the coming onslaught, of that I am sure. I too vow not to bend, to see us to victory. By my lance, I do swear.
If marauder level 30 class quest Bringing Down the Mountain Bringing Down the Mountain is complete
Me an' the others'll cause enough ruckus to wake the dead, so you lot should have an easy time sneakin' in.
If scholar is unlocked (NPC location needs confirmation)
Greetings, Forename. A pity that our paths will be diverging on the battlefield, though we shall see each other again once the dust has settled, worry not. And when we do, you shall find me stronger than before.
If bard is unlocked (NPC locations need confirmation)
We're still deciding who'll be staying behind and who'll act as a diversion. Emmanellain is to guard the camp, while Sanson and I join the van.
Jehantel may have already waxed philosophical on this topic, but it is here upon the battlefield that a bard shows their true mettle. Wherever swords clash and magicks crackle, our song shall be heard.
It has all been leading up to this. As I'm assigned to the diversionary force, I doubt our paths will cross once the fighting starts, so I shall take this opportunity to wish you the very best of luck!
Truth be told, I am feeling more than a bit nervous. I have never been involved in something of such scale, but with Guydelot and the others at my side, I'm confident we will succeed.

Speak with Lyse.

Start of cutscene.
Forename! The way into the tunnel is clear. We've made sure of it.
What will you say?
I wish you'd made sure to bring a coat instead.
Oh, I'll warm up when I throw a punch or two.
Then we'd best get in there before we freeze. Especially you.
Oh, the shoe will be on the other foot once we're in, believe you me. A good fight should warm us right up!
Hmph. Barely enough cloth to swaddle a newborn. Clearly, you have spent too long around this feral dog of a Dotharl.
Watch your tongue, fool, lest I feed it to the crows!
We will see who is the fool when you freeze to death. Expect me not to warm your ill-prepared hide ─ these furs are for myself and my Nhaama alone, should I be blessed to meet her this day.
As if any woman of worth would wish to be warmed by you, “little sun.” Should we find such a warrior within, she will bask in my glorious flame.
Stop, both of you! Save your fire for the enemy. As for extra furs, I have plenty to spare!
As do we.
Hello, everyone! All set for battle, I see.
Yes, free of unnecessary encumbrances, if rather more susceptible to the cold. Let us review our strategy ─ quickly, if you don't mind.
Pipin's group has gone ahead to the Enceladeum. We are to meet them there.
We wait until the tempered's attention is drawn by our diversionary force, then we sneak onto the train. Next stop: the Tower of Babil!
If any ─ tempered included ─ are injured, we Xaela will tend to them.
You Scions must press on, no matter what.
We should avoid moving as a group until we're underground, so we'll need to make our own ways to the Enceladeum. See you there.
End of cutscene.
Optional dialogue
A “glorious flame”...? Nay, I would have seen it, were it so...
I crave battle, not this insipid chatter.
Just head north, and you'll reach the Enceladeum soon enough!
The Scions are welcome to our spare furs as well! Erm, you might mention that to Urianger...
...I think it's time I was off. If I look at Urianger for one more moment I'm liable to freeze solid.
Fear not ─ no serious wounds have gone untreated. Nor will I stand for being left behind while the rest of you rush headlong into danger, so you needn't bother suggesting it.
C-C-Cold? N-N-Nay, I feel nary a thing... Nary a thing...
When I infiltrated the palace with Gaius, we took an entirely different route. Since then, the whole place has been reconstructed, and 'twould appear that path is no longer accessible.
...And you're one hundred percent certain you're fit to fight? No odd specters haunting your wake? Nothing feels...tingly?
We'll stagger our departures so as not to raise suspicion. You go on ahead.
Who could possibly be cold at a time like this? My heart is pounding with anticipation!
Apologies, but we need a moment more to finish our sweep of the station. Wouldn't want to leave anything to chance.
If Thaumaturge level 30 class quest Facing Your Demons Facing Your Demons completed
Now that the tempered ones are aware of our plan, they will doubtless start pouring in at any moment. Hm hm hm...
But needn't worry ─ my brothers and I will see that none shall pass. Go forth and wreak your destruction!
You, Thancred, and the others go on ahead. We'll make sure you're not pursued.
If Pugilist level 30 class quest Return of the Holyfist Return of the Holyfist completed
Forename, we will take up the rear so as to ensure you are not caught unawares. Trust that we will always have your back. Now go finish this fight!

Speak with Pipin.

Hail! It's good to see you, Forename.
We heard that you collapsed, but were given only the most cursory explanation. I'm glad you've recovered ─ and quickly enough to take part in the operation, at that.
As you will have heard, we've secured the way in. Some few are to remain behind to keep your escape route clear.
Our comrade from Lente's Tears will lead the way into the station. I'll join you soon.
Optional dialogue
I will send the others to meet you in the station below.
The station is right this way. Tread lightly, now.

Wait at the destination inside the station.

Start of cutscene.
This is everyone.
Consider the enemy well and truly distracted!
Time to go.
Our primary objective is, of course, the Telophoroi's leaders.
But should we be presented with an opportunity to vanquish Anima, we must seize it.
If it is indeed the force behind the towers, destroying it will deliver our allies from the Telophoroi's reign of terror.
And I, for one, would not see the Garlean people manipulated any longer, be it by primal, Ascian, or anything else.
Hear, hear. There's been enough of that.
We came to help the people of Garlemald, and that's what we're going to do. Together!
Till the very end.
The train should be along any moment now. Prepare to board, everyone!
End of cutscene.

The Tower of Babil The Tower of Babil now accessible

Optional dialogue
Aye, aye, kill no man. I have not forgotten your instruction. I must settle for crushing the ironmen's toys. Their blue blood will feed my flames!
Your comrades tell me that the Telophoroi abducted you on the selfsame eve they so rudely interrupted our meal. A brazen feat that would make a Buduga proud.
But even had it not ended poorly, it was a disappointment in many respects. I have decided that when we return triumphant, the Oronir will hold a far grander feast on the Azim Steppe. You have permission to attend.
It's likely that Anima, at least, will notice when we enter the tower. There's no point in trying to stay hidden after that.
So when the time comes, I say don't overthink it, and cut a path straight through!
Strange. Though this will be a more fearsome fight than any Naadam, I feel at peace...
Maybe it is because I have Sadu, Magnai, and you at my side.
Maybe it is because we fight for all Xaela, and more peoples besides. There is but one path ─ that which leads to victory!
The train we're boarding is meant to carry supplies and armaments and the like.
With any luck, we can slip past the tempered as they go about loading the freight.
We were only able to ascertain that the tunnel connects to the tower. I fear I have little to offer as to the details of the interior or present situation therein.
If Fandaniel is to be believed, we don't have the luxury of time to scout ahead, so we'll have to trust in your instincts. They've served us well enough thus far.
'Tis no meager delight to watch Alisaie and Alphinaud grow more resolute in mind and heart.
And remarkable though their accomplishments may be, I doubt not that they are destined for still greater things.
Grant them thy protection, Master Louisoix. I implore thee...
If Fandaniel truly is Amon, to create a gate through which a primal may pass will not be beyond him.
From what I gather, he was utterly brilliant ─ and utterly mad.
Assuming Fandaniel intends to make Zodiark serve as a catalyst for the Final Days...
One cannot but wonder if he willingly parted ways with the other Ascians long ago.
Surely they would not have permitted the very god they created to forestall the world's end to be used in such a way.
When Zenos murdered Varis, Gaius was upon him in an instant. Seldom have I seen such fury.
I won't pretend to know the bond they shared, but pain, fear, rage...I know them well. I know what can drive a man to drown in them.
Though his homeland may have wished for his blade, my lance will roar in its stead.
I'm only too aware that our intervention may not be what many of Garlemald's people want or need right now.
Not every tragedy can be laid at the feet of the Telophoroi. Certainly not that of Licinia and her sister.
Nevertheless, we must follow our conscience, and mine has led me here.
Much as I'd like to be the one to wipe the grin off Fandaniel's smug little face, I haven't lost sight of why we're here.
Our ultimate goal is to prevent the Telophoroi from doing any further harm, no matter how.
But if I do get the chance to introduce my fist to his jaw ─ and gods, do I hope I do ─ I won't turn it down!

Enter the Tower of Babil

Start of voiced cutscene.
Now or never!
End of cutscene.

Duty dialogue

Magitek Freight Depot E and Subterranean Sector (area 1)

We'd better clear the train of threats before we arrive, or things could get nasty!
Unworthy curs!
We're slowing down! Our destination must be close.
Look, captives! Help me free them!
You may leave them in our care!
We're here to help!
A moment's reprieve...
From here onwards, we should split into three groups to divide their attention.

Magitek Servicing (boss 1)

My beautiful little boy will keep this tower free of vermin!
Uhhhngh!

Barnabas uses Ground and Pound on Lugae.

Ouch! What are you doing, you foolish boy!? The vermin are over there!
Uhhhngh!

After the fight (one random linkpearl call from the following)

This is Lyse—we've unlocked the lift!
The alarum should be disabled now. With that, I believe we can use the lift!
The ironmen's contraptions were no match for the Sun!
I have smashed those noisy machines to pieces!

Conveyance Sector and Palatial Sector (area 2)

What could they possibly need such an enormous lift for?
Enemies!? In here!?
Preening fool! Stay alert!
The Sun does not heed the barking of feral dogs!
The farther we go, the worse this place gets...
Indeed. We'd best be prepared for any eventuality.
So our paths diverge... Then let us see who gets there first!

Martial Conditioning (boss 2)

Gah! I'll teach you to underestimate my genius!
Wee hee hee! Look upon the face of fear!
Wee hee hee! I'll slice you in two!
Nothing quite like good, old-fashioned explosions!
Lord Zenos put me in charge for a reason! I'll have your head for playthings!
Wee hee hee! Even the mightiest of warriors can't fight without air!

After the fight

Curses! You may have bested me, but you're no match for Lord Zenos!
Thanks for waiting!
I trust all was well?

Palatial Sector and Auxiliary Sector (area 3)

Go! I shall deal with these whelps!

The Iron Womb (boss 3)

Anima begins feeding on souls!
A horrific roar tears at the fabric of reality!
Wails of lamentation call forth chaotic energies!
The altered reality plunges into chaos!
Start of cutscene.

Optional post-duty pop-ups

Optional dialogue
No one would wish for such an abomination...
Where are Zenos and Fandaniel!?
The embodiment of Garlemald's hopes and dreams, eh?
What doth lie within these countless vials?
How could love for one's nation give rise to such a monstrosity?
Agony made flesh...
The orchestrators of this chaos are nowhere to be seen.

Duty Support dialogue

Magitek Freight Depot E and Subterranean Sector (area 1)

This is it! Forward!
I shall bring up the rear.
Let me at them!
Quickly, but calmly...
Never thought I'd come back...
The Telophoroi's reign ends this day!
Captives!
Here to be tempered, no doubt!
Prisoners! Let's get them out of there!
Let us entrust them to our comrades.
This is barbaric!

Magitek Servicing (boss 1)

An engineer and his creation, I presume.
He doth not appear to have been tempered.
What's that supposed to be?
A hypertuned soldier, perhaps? As for the other chap, who knows?
A face only a mother could love...
Does he even know friend from foe?
If we must fight, can we get on with it?
The brute's far from bright...
Slow of wit yet heavy of hand...
What am I watching?
Can we not just walk past it?

After the fight

He ran away?
Hardly seems worth chasing...
After him!
Damn! The engineer got away!
Is this the best they can muster?

Conveyance Sector and Palatial Sector (area 2)

Even on the inside, this place has changed completely.
Just think what it took to build this ghastly place...
Going up?
I feel the air rushing upwards...
So far, so good. Let's continue.
I sense danger afoot...
You sense it, too, yes?
There must be a way to reach the upper levels...
The perfect route...if one enjoys being ambushed...
I know that feeling... The same as the Tower of Zot.

Martial Conditioning (boss 2)

Magitek... No, wait... That's something far worse.
Indeed. The aether of a living being.
I sense living aether... That is no mere machine.
Pathetic creature.
Even the Allagans would balk at such devilry.

After the fight

A fitting end for one so depraved.
I'm inclined to agree.
Was he tempered?
He never stood a chance.
Let us not dwell on this grim episode. Onward.

Auxiliary Sector (area 3)

I must say, I'm not a fan of the décor.
And the aether here is positively vile.
I sense great evil...all around us.
What is this foul stench?
Have care, my friends!
We're heading in the right direction.
Is that... Varis?
A primal...summoned by the Garleans themselves.
Tempered by their own Emperor...
As I suspected, each tower contained a piece of his corpse!
The cause of so much misery...
This fiend shall plague the world no longer!

The Iron Womb (boss 3)

No more games. This ends here.
Indeed. Let us expunge this blight once and for all!
I can barely look at it...
steady now. We can't afford any mistakes.
Every fiber of my being is in revulsion...
All the horrors of Allag cannot compare...

Post-duty cutscene

Start of voiced cutscene.
Farewell, Varis. May the gods have mercy on your soul.
Come. The other two await.

At the Nethergate. Fandaniel is at a terminal while Zenos watches.

This madness ends here!
Oh hush. This is the best part...
Enough!

Estinien jumps at Fandaniel but is blocked by a barrier. Fandaniel laughs maniacally.

O mighty Zodiark, awaken from your slumber and descend!

The Tower of Babil shoots a beam of energy at the moon. It is blocked by a ward.

Some manner of magical defense!?

Krile slowly walks in.

The shackles that bind my adversary will not be so easily broken!
Hydaelyn... Feeble relic of a forgotten age...
Hark! Victory...is mine!

The beam intensifies. The wards on the moon begin to break, except for one. The beam then stops.

No more aether... And I was so close!
My lord, a slight change of plans. We shall travel to the moon and break this wretched barrier ourselves!
Whatever it takes.

The room begins to rumble.

What was that!?
The final order issued by Anima to the tempered thralls.
“Should the Empire fall, the world must share her fate.”
Of course, Father lacked the conviction to give such a command. The abomination born of his flesh was but a puppet ─ and I the puppeteer.
You madman! You monster!
There's a funny joy in watching your flailing attempts to fight the inevitable. You're all going to die and are powerless to prevent it.
We really must be on our way. You're welcome to give chase, provided you are content to leave comrade and tempered alike to die screaming.

Fandaniel and Zenos teleport to the moon. Krile collapses.

I have asked too much of this child. Tend to her.
The last brand at Mare Lamentorum is yet unbroken. Zodiark remains bound.
I have shifted the flow of aether and sent the enemy far from their destination.
Now, I shall divert it once more. An ally awaits, and I will deliver you unto him.
Seek his aid. Restore the seal. Zodiark must not be set free...

Krile's eyes close. Another rumble is heard.

The tempered are running wild. Not only those at the tower, but those back at the camp.
The others are doing their best to contain them, but the situation is growing beyond our control.
Leave them to die, or give up the chase. Just like Fandaniel said...
What will you say?
I'm the one Zenos wants.
Only I can bring an end to this.
Garlemald's fate is in your hands.
You're...you're going alone!?
You have our trust and our faith. I pray we have yours.
Our friends and the tempered need our help. We will save as many as we can ─ I swear!
Once we have matters well in hand, we will join you on the moon. Until then, be careful. There's no telling what you'll find.
End of cutscene.
Optional dialogue
Fear not for Krile. Go forth...and return, I prithee.
She channeled a dangerous amount of aether. And that's to say nothing of the teleportation magick she must have used to get here.
Yet Krile and Hydaelyn both were clearly willing to take the risk. Hmm.
We're moving out to rendezvous with the remainder of the contingent. Leave everything here to us.
Stand there for just a moment, please.
...A prayer for good luck. Now you can't possibly fail!
We've no time for worrying over what's done. Let's go.
As I suspected...

Speak with Alphinaud.

If all of the tempered are affected, Jullus and his comrades likely put up quite the struggle.
We'll find a way to save them ─ we must. I only pray we are not too late.
In the meantime...may the Twelve carry you to victory.
You may now enter the Tower of Babil with a party of NPC avatars. To make use of this feature, open the Trust interface located under Duty in the main menu.
Optional dialogue
I have faith in you. Now and always.
