The seventy-four year old Archbishop Thordan VII came from modest origins, the son of a lesser house pledged to House Durendaire. A lover of traditional Coerthan cooking, in his youth, he studied swordplay, and perhaps could have achieved moderate success within high society. However, as the youngest of five, he stood to inherit little, and so with his parents' endorsement he entered Saint Endalim's Scholasticate. He graduated as one of the Trinity and successfully entered into the service of the Holy See, and was quick to take part in the power struggles inside the Vault.
As he grew more successful and influential, he gradually rose within the clergy's hierarchy until he was named a bishop in his forty and second year. However, it was also at this time that he was rumored to have broken his vow of celibacy and fathered a child with a lover. Well aware that such a scandal could be used as a weapon by his political rivals, he made every effort to suppress them until after he was elected archbishop.
The Fury's Grace: Symbol of the leader of the Ishgardian Orthodox Church and sovereign of the Holy See, this holy crozier has been handed down to each archbishop. Embedded in its center is a rare sapphire of ultramarine hue, known as the Frozen Tear. The staff was so named for the legend that it was bestowed upon Archbishop Reymanaud I by a divine messenger of Halone.

Lore

Following the defeat of the Garleans at the Praetorium, the Ascians turned to Ishgard and Thordan, offering him power to bring an end to the Dragonsong War through the power of summoning. Though Thordan was loath to work alongside them, he pretended to ally himself with them, so he may take their power and dispose of them later.

When the Warrior of Light appears in Ishgard and participates in a trial of combat to protect Tataru Taru, Thordan called them before him to apologize for the rashness of the Heavens' Ward, and explains that the Ascians had made contact with him, and explained what they had offered him. The Warrior of Light and Alphinaud Leveilleur left his throne room, not certain if he was their ally or not.

Later, when the Warrior of Light returned to the city following an attempt to parley with Hraesvelgr and failing, Aymeric de Borel came before Thordan to question him about whether he knew about the origins of the Dragonsong War or not. Fearing the change to their way of life this knowledge would bring, he threw Aymeric into the cells beneath The Vault. The Warrior of Light comes to Aymeric's rescue and attempts to corner Thordan, but he escapes on his Airship headed for Azys Lla after his knights, using a Primal power obtained from summoning the original Knights Twelve into themselves, killed Haurchefant.

Thordan waits for the Warrior of Light to obtain the key to Azys Lla before ambushing them and stealing the key for himself and moving past the barrier around the floating city. Eventually the Warrior of Light manages to pursue him and his knights to The Aetherochemical Research Facility, where they defeat one of the two Ascians who ambush them there. Thordan appears with the coffin of Haldrath, the original Thordan's son, and reveals Nidhogg's other eye was buried with him after it consumed and destroyed him. He uses the power of the eye to summon King Thordan within himself, and wields the sword Ascalon to kill and absorb Lahabrea, becoming even stronger.

He tells the Warrior of Light that he intends to "mete out justice" as he sees fit and become the god-king, ruling over all, and any who stand in his way would meet his blade. He offers the Warrior of Light the chance to join him or face him in combat. When the Warrior draws their weapon, he summons his Knights Twelve and engages them in combat. After a long and brutal battle, the Warrior of Light felled the god-king, bringing an end to the lies of the Holy See.
