Lore

Shale had spent her entire lonely life beneath Everkeep's barrier. Her parents gone, and her memories of them, either due to a regulator or her having been too young to remember. She found this deeply disturbing but did not have the the willpower to commit to the choice of removing her regulator. Her skill with electrope led her to become an engineer, only for her to grow tired of her overly familiar coworkers. Eventually, a bar on True Vue offered her a position, and Shale discovered she didn't dislike the work due to being able to keep emotional distance from customers. During her breaks, Shale fell into the habit of slipping into the back alley with strong drinks and drinking herself unconscious. During one of these outtings, Shale would meet Cahciua. Initially rejecting Cahciua's offer to become her partner, Shale would come to find Cahciua as a regular visitor at her workplace. During these visits Cahciua would tell Shale stories of adventures, the world beyond the barrier, and her son Elene'shpya. The two would form a bond over these visits, until eventually Shale agreed to join Cahciua.

Traveling to an abandoned mine within Earthen Sky, Cahciua showed Shale components for a large transmitter that required construction. The two briefly exchanged conversations about life and death, and Shale began to have concerns over what would happen to her memories of Cahciua if she were to die. Despite this, Shale did not find the willpower to remove her regulator even when Cahciua insisted on rejecting the regulator. Shale began visiting Earthen Sky of her own accord and teaching Cahciua how to make use of her equipment. And after Cahciua returned injured, having run afoul of a mechanical sentry, Shale demanded she be made a fully fledged accomplice. Cahciua was unable to deny Shale, and revealed her plan to put a stop to Zoraal Ja's rule over Alexandria. Cahciua would only allow her to assist from afar while she conducted reconnaissance herself. Though Shale was frustrated by this restriction, Cahciua never failed to show her gratitude.

Just before a solo reconnaissance mission to scout out a route to the private residence of Zoraal Ja, Cahciua equipped a regulator to ease Shale's concerns and suggested that perhaps they ought to bring on a few more companions. The signal from Cahciua's regulator disappeared mere hours later. Shale attempted to tear her regulator off in order to prevent the memory deletion, but it was too late, and she lost all her memories of Cahciua. Shale had nothing now, nothing but hard liquor and impotent anger. She picked fights with anyone and everyone, disregarding─welcoming, even─whatever harm might come her way.

Afterwards, Shale and Geode helped Cahciua (now using an outrunner to interact with the world outside Living Memory) in reforming Oblivion. After she and Geode got into a fight Cahciua convinced both of them to fight for a just cause. Intriguied by her ideas, Shale and Geode joined her. Cahciua suspected that another resistance existed, and thanks to Shale's talent in hacking they found traces of unauthorized access in the Backroom of the Neon Stein. Once they opened it, they realized it had been long abandoned. They found records of a group called "Oblivion", and decided to carry on it's legacy.

Shale and Geode became the de-facto leaders of Oblivion and operates the Backroom Office in Solution 9. With Geode's passing however, she has become the sole leader of Oblivion. She is majorly involved in hacking the operative systems of Everkeep and encrypting data.

With the implementation of memory restoration to regulators, Shale restored her memories of Cahciua and removed her regulator.
