Lore
“"Do you feel it? The weight of the 'sacred duty.' To strive for the betterment of mankind and stand as a beacon of hope..."
Originally from a Veena village in the Skatay Range, Loifa was afflicted with a dire lung ailment from birth. Though he took up with a master in the traditional fashion, both believed he was living on borrowed time—until a healer by the name of Guildivain appeared promising to cure the affliction.
When Loifa arrived in Sharlayan, however, he found himself not the recipient of life-saving medicine, but the subject of forbidden experimentation. Many of his fellow captives died in anguish during this process, and those who survived were left prone to uncontrollable bouts of violence due to their unnatural surfeit of aether. After a tragic accident born of this side effect, Guildivain fled to Eorzea in hopes of concealing his crimes. Loifa and his fellow survivors escaped the facility to follow, determined to see justice served at all costs.
— Encyclopaedia Eorzea Volume III, p. 237
As a young man, Loifa had been afflicted with a disease of the lungs that grew more and more severe until it reached the point that he only had a short amount of time to live. One day, a Sage named Guildivain approached Loifa's master, promising that he could heal his sickness, and took him away. At Guildivain's lab, he met Mahaud and Ancel, two youths who were also sick and hoped to be cured. What followed instead were years of brutal experimentation and augmentation that altered the three, fortifying their aether and making them much stronger in the process. However, they were prone to fits of blind rage and violence as a side effect. After Guildivain fled Sharlayan, Loifa and the remaining survivors attempted to escape. His companion collapsed in pain, capturing the attention of a Sage at Physis Technon, who immediately ran over with intent to aid them- but thanks to the side effects, the fallen comrade flew into violent frenzy and couldn't be stopped. Loifa did his best to save the woman after his friends' attack, but it was too late. With the last of her strength, she bequeathed him her Soul Crystal and the armaments of a Sage, telling him to use his powers to help people, not to use them for selfish reasons.
The trio managed to escape, but sought revenge for what had been done to them. They began hunting Guildivain, which led them to Eorzea. They learned that after he was driven out of Sharlayan, Guildivain had taken the name Faldrinet, and had moved to Ishgard. Loifa and his companions pursued Faldrinet and had cornered him outside of Idyllshire. Just as they had caught him, Lalah Jinjahl and the Warrior of Light attempted to stop them. After shielding the Warrior of Light from an attack, Loifa warns them to stay out of their way and teleports away with the other two, and they make for Saint Mocianne's Arboretum. They search for the plant Muscmaloi, which is used in aether-fortifying recipes, knowing Guildivain frequently used it in his experiments. As they find some, they are pursued once again by the Warrior of Light, now wielding the Nouliths of a Sage, and Lalah. Mahaud and Ancel both attack the pair, but are soon made short work of. Loifa teleports the group away again, but accidentally drops the pouch of muscmaloi in the commotion.
After some time, Loifa learned that Faldrinet bought his muscmaloi from a specific apothecary out by Black Brush Station. Upon arriving, they ran into Faldrinet himself and chased him across the desert. Once again, the trio had him cornered when Lalah and the Warrior of Light intervened once again. Faldrinet taunted them and drove Ancel and Mahaud into a frenzied rage. However, when they tried to suppress it, they ended up passing out. To distract the Warrior of Light, Loifa enhanced an Antling and set it upon them.
Lalah recognizes the state of Mahaud and Ancel as the effects of the experimentation of Guildivain. Loifa taunts her for being naive, and teleports the three away once again. After resting, the three end up in Aleport, where they find Faldrinet and a merchant. Faldrinet kills the merchant, and kidnaps Ancel and Mahaud, leaving Loifa wounded on the road.
Loifa is rescued by Lalah and the Warrior of Light, and explains who Faldrinet is and what he has done. They also find out that the woman who gave him his Soul Crystal was Lalah's mother. He asks the two for help, and they agree to rescue the other two. They eventually track him down in a cave in the Dravanian Forelands near Hundred Throes. They learn that Faldrinet/Guildivain had experimented on Ancel and Mahaud again, and taken hold of their minds completely. He set the two on Loifa and party, leading to a fight. After the two were knocked out, Loifa began healing them, and the Warrior of Light fended off the attacks of Guildivain. After everyone had been returned to normal, They all stood against Guildivain, who had transformed himself into a massive monster. They managed to defeat him and bind him once he returned to normal, so he could not escape.
Loifa decided to let Sharlayan justice run its course and deal with Guildivain, while planning to continue training as a Sage and would work to heal his friends' new conditions. Lalah informs the trio that they were no longer criminals, as their names had been cleared in a matter of speaking.
