Twenty-one years old, Mahaud was raised alongside her stepbrother Ancel, a fellow orphan, by an apothecary in Lost Hope. When the Highlander began suffering from Aetherspurn, a disease which prevents the body from drawing energy from food, her stepmother was tricked into placing her in the care of Guildivain, who used her as a test subject in his twisted experiments. At length she managed to escape with Loifa and Ancel, and the three embarked upon a quest for vengeance.
