Lore

Bardam was a legendary hero and great warrior who came to the Azim Steppe long ago. Though little is now known about him, it is believed that to prove himself to the Au Ra that made their home there on the Steppe, he made a great pilgrimage to a holy site within the mountains surrounding the area. He traveled under his own strength, forgoing horses or other convenient methods of travel. He made his way through the mountains, battling great monsters and demons as he did so. After a great battle with a demon that lasted over three days, Bardam fell into a deep maw in the mountains. Refusing to give up however, he traveled on, coming across the nesting place of the Yol. After managing to tame one by proving his worthiness to it, he rode the massive bird to the holy place, where he prayed at a stone altar. Following his return, the Au Ra were stunned by his achievements, and accepted him as one of their own. Upon his passing, they named the holy site Bardam's Mettle, and drew sprawling cave paintings depicting him riding on the back of a Yol.

Now, as a rite of passage into adulthood and to become a full-fledged warrior, each Xaela must pass through Bardam's Mettle and tame a Yol. This is by no means an easy feat, and many do not return from this pilgrimage.
