Rostnsthal was once better known as Commodore Sthalmann Stalmannsyn, the commodore of Limsa Lominsa's Knights of the Barracuda. At the peak of his career, Sthalmann was responsible for ordering a self-serving and reckless operation that aimed to oust the current Admiral using the treasures of the fabled Seal Rock—a mission that succeeded in uncovering a ritual object for summoning primals.But the operation soon went awry. With many of his subordinates slaughtered, and the artifact taken, Sthalmann's reputation was shattered beyond all repair. Stripped of his rank, he took up the name "Rostnsthal," (meaning "rusty steel" in the old Roegadyn tongue) and recruited his own crew of pirates in an ultimately unsuccessful bid to steal back the lost relic. The years following this failure were spent wallowing in cheap grog and misery, until an unexpected offer from distant Ishgard saw him accept the post of a marksmanship instructor.

On the heels of his attempted retirement from the Machinist's Guild, Rostnsthal was pursued to Lower La Noscea by Stephanivien, Joye and the Warrior of Light, begging him to teach them the ways of the Machinist. Initially he refused, not wanting to teach some random person pulled by Stephenivien from the street, but was eventually persuaded (at gunpoint) by Joye to give them a test. After hunting with them, Rostnsthal was convinced to return to the guild in a solely instructor position as an advisor. He set the Warrior of Light various tasks in order to improve their aim and control.

Rostnsthal joined in the search of a crashed Garlean vessel for a specific Magitek part, sending the Warrior of Light to act as their guard while they all searched. When a Jungle Goobbue attacked, the Warrior of Light quickly put it down using the skills Rostnsthal taught them. With the beast defeated, they found the Magitek part in its stomach.

Rostnsthal aided in defending the guild when suspicious loiterers began attempting to intimidate the Machinists who would come and go from the workshop. He helped track down several people and squeezed the name of their employer out of them: a man named Tedalgrinche. Because of his sordid past as a member of the Knights of the Barracuda, he did not participate in the demonstration of their weapons with the rest of the guild, to keep his name from tarnishing their reputation.

Rostnsthal continued to instruct both the Warrior of Light and Joye in the art of the Machinist and the use of their tools, and helped prepare them when Tedalgrinche challenged Stephanivien to a tournament for control over the Skysteel Manufactory. When Tedalgrinche's minions began destroying their weapons, he aided in driving off as many of them as he could. On the day of the tournament, he helped prepare the battlefield and create strategies they could employ to win.

When Joye suddenly up and left the guild to get married, Rostnsthal joined in the investigation, even taking to the field to battle against the Dragons while the Warrior of Light rescued her father, who had been taken by a mysterious kidnapper.

Following the guild being wrongly accused of a crime by the Ishgardian Temple Knights in an attempt to shut them down by Tedalgrinche, Rostnsthal attempted to take the blame and the fall so as to save the guild members from having to attempt to slay a massive Dragon by the name of Veri Selen to clear their names. he was promptly stopped by the Warrior of Light and explained that he wanted to atone for his past sins with the Barracudas, and now intended to fight alongside them and slay the dragon, making sure they all make it through the battle alive.

Rostnsthal fought hard in the battle, defending even Tedalgrinche and his men from the Dragons attacks. When the fierce battle concluded, he thanked his guild members for everything and set off, claiming to never stay in one place for too long.

Rostnsthal was later hired by Hilda to teach The Hounds the ways of the Machinist so they could better defend the city against any threat, be it monster or errant Temple Knights. He also took part in the investigation of the black market sale of a weapon-the legendary sword, Hrunting, and helped fight off ex-pirate black market traders. When he thought he recognized one of the sellers, he used his old connections to track down the ones responsible for the sale, and moved the investigation further along. He continued to offer aid when the Temple Knights came to attack the members of the Hounds for their investigation into their affairs, keeping his students safe. After the investigation concluded, he bid everyone farewell once again, saying he's done more than enough to lay the foundations for Hilda and the Hounds to master their art.
