Flamethrower is an action unlocked by questing at level 70. It is available for Machinist.
Notes
- This action hits for a total of eleven times – once initially, and once every second thereafter. The total potency of this action is 1320, assuming it has been channelled in its entirety.
- This action, similar to all damage over time effects, will be snapshotted by raid buffs, excluding debuff-based raid buffs like Dokumori and Chain Stratagem.[1]
- Because this action does not generate heat, machinists may consider the following scenarios when optimizing damage:[2]
- Flamethrower should never be prioritized over Hypercharge, Chain Saw and Excavator, or Drill or Bioblaster.
- An exception for Hypercharge is if a group of enemies are about to be defeated before another group (i.e. trash mobs in a dungeon). In this case, Flamethrower is preferable on two or more targets.
- If Hypercharge is not available, Flamethrower is preferable on two or more targets over Scattergun and the Heated Clean Shot combo.
- Flamethrower is preferable to Air Anchor if there are six or more targets. This is because of the battery Air Anchor generates.
- Flamethrower is thus a gain on two or more targets over the Heated Clean Shot combo when all multi-tools are on cooldown. To maximize the time spent while executing Flamethrower, it is best to channel it as soon as possible after all multi-tool actions have been executed. Machinists should still be weary of mechanics or incoming AoEs, as Flamethrower will be cancelled upon any movement or actions, as it is a channeled action.
History
Patch 7.3 (2025-08-05): Potency has been increased from 100 to 120.
Patch 7.1 (2024-11-12):
- Area of effect has been increased from 8 to 12 yalms.
- Potency has been increased from 80 to 100.
Patch 6.0 (2021-12-07): Potency has been changed from 100 to 80.
Patch 5.1 (2019-10-29): The cooldown of weaponskills when executing this action is now affected by skill speed.
Patch 5.0 (2019-07-02):
- Potency has been increased from 60 to 100.
- The Gauss Barrel effect "Heat Gauge gradually increases by 20 while Flamethrower is active. Heat Gauge not affected when used outside battle." has been removed.
- The requirements "Triggers the cooldown of weaponskills upon execution. Cannot be executed during the cooldown of weaponskills." have been added.
Patch 4.3 (2018-05-22): Fixed an issue wherein the action would not generate critical or direct hits.
Patch 4.06 (2017-08-07): Increase to Heat Gauge during use has been changed from 10 to 20.
