Since man took to the sea have there been tales of eight-legged monsters rising from the deep to tear ships asunder and devour their hapless crews. Yet in every tale there is some truth, and any sailor who dares brave the endless blue should learn quick to fear the sea monk, lest he be dragged down into the darkness himself. Hingans use the word “tako,” or octopus, to describe the wavekin, but scholars suggest the creature may be more closely related to a squid.
