Island Pasture
- See also: Island Animals
The Pasture is a feature added with the Island Sanctuary in Patch 6.2 where the player can keep and care for animals caught on the island in return for otherwise unobtainable items that are used in Isleworks Handicraft production. Animals have mood and appetite levels that can be managed for improved item rewards.
Animals create Leavings which can be gathered ("harvested") once per day after daily reset at 1 a.m. (PDT), and yields 50 experience per animal. (Animals maintained by the caretaking services do not yield any experience.) Each animal has both a common leaving and a bonus leaving. The common leaving is guaranteed, but the drop rate of its bonus leaving depends on its mood. An animal may drop up to one of each leaving each daily cycle.
Pasture Upgrades and Unlock Condition
The Pasture is unlocked at Sanctuary Rank 2 by following the Island Sanctuary tutorial questline.
It can be upgraded to increase the maximum number of animals the player can keep. Upgrades cost Seafarer's Cowries and take time to complete (Earth hours).
Because there are a maximum of 20 slots and 43 possible animals, it is not possible to have every animal at once. Therefore, animals should be distributed to provide sufficient quantities of each leaving to meet Workshop demand.
Level | Max Animals | Cost | Build Time | Requirement |
---|---|---|---|---|
1 | 5 | Free | None | Sanctuary Rank 2 |
2 | 10 | 1,000 | 2 Hours | Sanctuary Rank 4 Upgrade The Cozy Cabin from I to II |
3 | 20 | 1,500 | 4 Hours | Sanctuary Rank 7 Upgrade The Cozy Cabin from II to III |
Animal Mood and Appetite
Animals in the pasture can have the following five moods, which determines the rate that they will drop their rare leavings:
Animals have four appetite levels:
- Stuffed
- Satisfied
- Hungry
- Starving
Feeding an animal will raise its appetite to Stuffed regardless of its current hunger. When an animal is starving (unfed for 36 hours), its mood will automatically become hostile. Newly captured animals are by default starving and have hostile mood.
Petting an animal has no impact on its mood.
It is not possible for animals to die or escape the pasture, even if they are not fed for a prolonged period of time.
Animals can be fed every 6 hours, but only need to be fed once per cycle (24 hours) to prevent starvation. Unlike appetite, an animal's mood is affected by the type of feed given to it.
- Island Sweetfeed improves an animal's mood by one level, up to Content .
- Island Greenfeed improves an animal's mood by two levels, up to Chipper .
- Premium Island Greenfeed improves an animal's mood by two levels, up to Gleeful .
Caretaking Services
Caretaking Services are unlocked along with the last upgrade. For a daily fee of 10 Seafarer's Cowries per animal, a Caretaker can be hired to take care of the pasture animals. The fee is deducted by the daily reset.
How to Use Caretaking Services
After the pasture has been upgraded to the third level, a tool to unlock Caretaking Services will be added to the crafting log. Once the tool has been crafted, talking to the Creature Comforter about the caretaking services will unlock the feature.
The Caretaker can keep a maximum of 20 leavings and the player will have to talk to it to get the items, they won't automatically be added to the island inventory.
The Caretaker will suspend its maintenance for an animal if the player runs out of seafarer's cowries, the player's supply of food is exhausted, or if the maximum yield of 20 is reached.
How to start using the services:
- Open Pasture Management through the "Review status" dialogue option
- Select an animal (right-click on PC)
- Choose Entrust to Caretaker
- Select Feed and confirm
How to stop using the services:
- Select the animal in Pasture Management
- Choose Dismiss Caretaker

There are also "special" animals with both a time and weather-based spawn condition who have different models and independent sets of leavings.
