This step requires collecting a total of 1,200 Crystal Paste, split into four stages: 100 paste, then 200, 300, and finally 600. You can collect Crystal Paste without needing to equip the relic, queue as a level 100 job, or use the same job that accepted the quest.
The Crystal Paste is an stackable item that is stored in your regular inventory, so you can simply obtain 1,200 units then turn them in sequentially. You do not need to do the turn-ins as soon as the thresholds are met, because there is no danger of "overcapping."
The Merchant's Tale is also efficient, especially because players must run it at least 13 times to receive all the rewards from the dungeon.
Notably, Occult Crescent is one of the least efficient methods for this step.

Lydirceil is pondering the next step forward.
Lydirceil believes the voidsent's vessel will need to be crafted anew if it is to leverage its power. The group manages to glean that unlike its current guise, the creature's true form has limbs, and thus a plan emerges. Gerolt, for his part, sees an opportunity to further strengthen the bond between voidsent and vessel through the addition of a material known as “crystal paste” to the mixture used to fashion its body. And thus you find yourself tasked with retrieving one hundred portions of the substance for the weaponsmith.
Crystal paste can be obtained by completing duties.
On the Occult Crescent's South Horn, crystal paste can only be obtained from critical encounters, excluding the Forked Tower: Blood.

Upon receiving the crystal paste, Gerolt soon fashions a new vessel replete with the requisite appendages. Although the voidsent reports a renewed sense of strength, they complain that their mental faculties are still diminished. Hearing this, the weaponsmith resolves to craft yet another vessel, one that inevitably requires more resources.
You deliver a fresh batch of crystal paste to Gerolt, who sets about crafting another vessel. The summoned voidsent seems pleased with the latest iteration, although there remains room for improvement. The creature insists its true form was beautiful─and thus the effort to restore this missing element to the vessel begins. According to Gerolt, an even greater quantity of crystal paste will be required.
Yet another delivery made, yet another vessel crafted. Alas, though vastly improved, it seems Gerolt's latest rendition is not quite perfect. To well and truly forge a bond between the voidsent and its vessel, additional crystal paste is called for...
After much trial and error, not to mention your peerless paste procurement, the vessel is finally complete. Overjoyed at having attained their true form, the grateful voidsent introduces herself as Brigid. She then channels her aether into Gerolt's hammer─as per your pact. Having successfully borrowed the power of the void itself, it will not be long before your phantom weapon is rightfully enhanced.

Accidentally knocked a chunk out o' the vessel while I was shapin' it, but it seems like the defect turned into a serviceable mouth. I reckon we oughta ask 'em more about their true form.
You think the li'l bugger can't use their full power 'cause the vessel's not up to scratch, right? Does that mean we oughta remake it to match their true form?
If we're remakin' it anyway, I've a mind to work some crystal paste into the mixture.
It's clay containin' a specific proportion o' pulverized crystal─an' with it, plenty of aether. Reckon that oughta improve the bond between the bugger an' the vessel.
Just like Dodokkuli said, this'll likely take a few tries before we get the vessel right─an' that means I'll need ye to gather multiple batches o' paste.
Just how many batches that proves to be, we'll soon find out!
To enhance Gerolt's hammer and imbue your phantom weapon with greater power, you will need to avail yourself of the summoned voidsent's strength.
Because the creature's capabilities are currently limited, however, its vessel must be built anew. The greater its attunement to said vessel, the greater its power will grow.
The crystal paste Gerolt requires for this task can be obtained by completing various duties.
On the Occult Crescent's South Horn, crystal paste can be obtained from critical encounters, excluding the Forked Tower: Blood.

Please note that the current quest “In Pursuit of Perfection” cannot be abandoned via the journal. Should you wish to do so, speak with Lydirceil.
Makes no odds to me if ye feel like leavin', but we'll 'ave to restore the bugger back to 'ow we first found 'em. Just as a precaution, mind.
This quest can be abandoned at any time. Please be warned, however, any progress made with the voidsent's vessel will be forfeit.
Abandon the quest “In Pursuit of Perfection”?
Yes
Are you sure you wish to proceed?
Abandoning this quest will forfeit any progress made on the vessel. If you choose to proceed with the quest at a later date, you will need to gather crystal paste anew.
I'm guessin' precise instructions for makin' the vessel were on the damaged bit o' the stone tablet. 'Course, it doesn't help that the li'l bugger only remembers that it had bleedin' limbs...
A new set o' limbs not quite enough, eh? Just you wait, I'll craft a crackin' new vessel─brains, brawn, the whole bleedin' lot!
Obviously, that calls for more crystal paste. It's crackin' stuff, but ye can't rework it, so I'll need enough to make the new limbs and the basic structure again. Two hundred portions oughta do it.
A gaggle o' downtrodden minions doin' yer biddin'? Reminds me o' Rowena. Gah, there's nothin' like the thought o' that wretched harridan to douse me fire...
Listen, I'll see to the vessel, but I'll need more crystal paste to do the face justice. Bring me another three hundred portions, would ye?
This is the technique inspired by aetheric infusion... The answer was starin' us in the face this whole bleedin' time!
Right, lad/lass, I can see the vessel's final form in me mind's eye. All I need is a last six hundred servin's o' crystal paste to bring me vision to life!
End of cutscene.
Deliver crystal paste to Gerolt for a fourth time.
'Tis a delight to be summoned to this world again. I shall do my utmost to fulfill our pact.
This vessel and its brilliant orb brim with power unbridled─such plenty have I tasted. My reserves are more than sufficient to transform a mortal implement!
Does your command of aether extend to aetherwells?
Ah, I see you have gathered significant quantities of aether in these orbs of yours. Much of it impure, alas.
Of course, I need but draw on my power to corral this profusion of aether into a state of harmony─transforming a mortal implement will be but a trifle.
