[Suitable for printing on small canvases.]

— In-game description

Caterwauler is a Seafood.

Basic Information

  • Recommended Fishing Level: 50 ★★
  • Fish Type: Rivers
  • Aquarium Type: None
  • Sizes: Smallest - ??im, Largest - 14.0im

Description

Dwarf catfish are notorious for the obnoxious noise they make with their fins, and none among them is more obnoxious than the caterwauler. No sooner does it get hooked than it unleashes a dreadful wailing noise that has sent countless unprepared anglers fleeing.

Acquisition

Fishable areas of the Mourning Widow.

Lower La Noscea (X:24, Y:23) -- Level 1

Strategy

The Caterwauler is a small-jawed fish with a ferocious bite (!!!). It has no time, weather, or special requirements, but can only be caught by using Moth Pupa or Versatile Lure as bait.

Recommended Bait: Moth Pupa

  • This bait is avaialble from vendors in all of the starting cities for 1Gil.
  • While Versatile Lure can catch the Caterwauler, it also able to catch nearly twice as many fish at the Mourning Widow.
  • Because of this, a fisher is significantly more likely to catch the Caterwauler when using Moth Pupa as bait.

Recommended Surface Slap: Any fish.

  • Surface Slap is a level 71 Fisher ability, and it will prevent the fisher from catching that same species of fish again. This will increase the odds of catching all other fish, including the Caterwauler.
  • All of the normal fish available with Moth Pupa have similar bite rates. Princess Trout has the lowest reported bite rate (and may be the worst option to Slap), but data is inconclusive overall.

The use of Ambitious Lure/Modest Lure is not recommended.

  • While using Moth Pupa bait, only fish with weak bites can be caught. As a result, these abilities have no effect.

Additional Consideration

  • The fastest way to get to this fishing spot is to teleport to Limsa Lominsa, then use the aethernet to the Tempest Gate exit.
  • While this fish can be caught anywhere along this stream, fishers may want to cast their lines southeast of (X:24.8, Y:23.3). The FATE You Call That a Toad occasionally spawns to the northwest of this spot, right on the stream.
