Journal

  • Y'shtola is eager to depart for the vault.
  • Y'shtola has returned from the city with not only Varshahn, but also Estinien in tow. Wondering what ominous danger the Archon might be expecting, you set off for Akyaali, and the vessel waiting to bear your little group to the ruins in the Bounty.
  • As promised, you find a ship moored at Akyaali. You board without further delay and depart for the vault, Y'shtola's quiet focus offset somewhat by Nidhana's infectious enthusiasm.
    • ※In the event that you leave Weaver's Warding, you may re-enter by speaking with the veteran Radiant in Akyaali.
  • Announcing her intention to test the efficacy of the warding scale against the corrupting influence of the Thirteenth, Y'shtola summons forth two nixies with an unexpectedly light-hearted ritual. The Archon then embeds the talisman within one of the diminutive familiars before sending both through the gate into the void. For your part, you are charged with standing guard while the experiment is in progress, lest hostile entities attempt to slip through the open portal.
  • Judging the experiment has gone on long enough, Y'shtola recalls her nixies from the shadowy realm beyond. The results are plain─while the warded familiar appears unaffected, its unprotected comrade has already begun to transform into a creature of the void. Y'shtola notes that, although G'raha Tia's hypothesis appears to be correct, the talisman will require augmentation to withstand the relentless influence of the Thirteenth.
  • A question from Estinien prompts a brief lecture on the nature of the void, a world plunged into an eternal darkness when the Ascians failed catastrophically in their efforts to force a Rejoining. You add to the explanation, sharing your own memories of the Thirteenth and the aether-starved monstrosities which stalk its sunless expanse. Varshahn considers these horrors good reason to discourage your expedition, but something in his demeanor suggests he feels otherwise in his heart of hearts...

Dialogue

Accepting the quest

Y'shtola: Look who I came across. Estinien seemed in need of diversion, and we, in turn, may have need of his lance...
Y'shtola: Right, then. Now that our little party is assembled, let us make our way to the ruins.
Estinien: Will we have need of Matsya's boat again?
Varshahn: Not this time. Once Y'shtola informed me of our destination, I arranged for a vessel to be made ready at Akyaali.
Y'shtola: Your Excellency is ever the gracious host. Shall we?

Optional Dialogue

Y'shtola: Onto the boat, if you please. We can chat on the way there.
Estinien: 'Tis likely not needed with Vrtra along, but I held onto the map against the chance we might return to the ruins.
Varshahn: You need not keep your weapons close at hand. The guardians will not attack if I am present, so I pray you leave them be...
Nidhana: And all this time I thought the tales of Alzadaal's hoard were no more than drunken sailors' fancies!

Speak with the veteran Radiant.

Veteran Radiant: The ship is yours to command.
Varshahn: Our thanks. We set sail at once.
Nidhana: Oh, this is so exciting! Alzadaal's Legacy─to see the truth of a legend with mine own eyes!
Veteran Radiant: All aboard for the treasure vault!
< Proceed to Weaver's Warding? >
< Yes >
< No >

Optional Dialogue

Y'shtola: Poor Vrtra─he really should have spoken with Estinien before we left. I shudder to think what we've cost them in terms of construct materials...
Estinien: I thought we cleared this place of constructs the last time we came through. 'Twould seem a few stragglers remained.
Varshahn: ...He laid waste to them ere I could utter a single word. <sigh>

Speak with Nidhana. (Cutscene)

| Voiced cutscene |
Nidhana: The ruins alone were impressive enough, but I never dreamed such a treasure lay hidden in the depths of the Bounty...
Nidhana: It may have been helpful to know this device existed, Your Excellency.
Varshahn: My apologies...the gate was a secret I shared with none but my closest advisors. I feared for what might happen should those with ill intentions learn of its existence.
Estinien: What is it you're doing now?
Y'shtola: There is something I wish to verify.
Y'shtola: The NOAH reports claim that a short stint into the void carries little risk of aetheric imbalance.
Y'shtola: Should one suffer an injury, however, or if one's expedition drags on longer than intended, that risk becomes significantly greater.
Y'shtola: G'raha theorized that a warding scale would confer protection form the void's corrupting influence... But I would prefer to test that hypothesis before we set foot in the Thirteenth ourselves.
Estinien: So...this is an experiment of sorts.
Y'shtola: Yes. An experiment... Tell me: how would you go about testing the efficacy of the warding scale?

What will you say?
> Might as well go myself.
Estinien: And how would you do that? The gate is still too small for any of us to pass through.
Y'shtola: Estinien is correct. Which is why I've elected to send a familiar in our stead.
> (Say nothing and look meaningfully at Estinien.)
Estinien: What? Why are you looking at me like that? Surely you'd not expect me to wriggle through that tiny portal?
Y'shtola: We needn't attempt anything so drastic. A small familiar should serve well enough.
> Maybe send a familiar?
Y'shtola: Very good. I see you've been paying attention.

Y'shtola: As Vrtra sent his simulacrum, so too shall we rely on a familiar to bear the brunt of any unpleasant consequences.
Y'shtola: Now, a lowly imp can navigate a fissure, no matter how narrow.
Y'shtola: Which means an arcane entity of similar stature should be able to manage the same.
Y'shtola: I hadn't wanted it to come to this...but no other familiars will do, I'm afraid.
Estinien: I mislike the sound of that. What manner of fiend does she mean to summon...?
Y'shtola: From ocean rise and cloudbank form, From mountain spring and rainfall storm, From river flow and life be born...
Y'shtola: Water, water, froth and foam!♪
Estinien: Ready your arms, I fear she's been possessed...
Nidhana: Oh come now, that was adorable!
Nixie: Water, water, froth and foam!♪ Time to play!
Y'shtola: Though not my first choice, these familiars I conceived of as a child have the best chance of fitting through the gate.
Y'shtola: ... I only wish my younger self had considered a more dignified ending to the creation ritual.
Y'shtola: In any case, these two should serve us well.
Y'shtola: This one will bear a warding scale...
Y'shtola: And when they return from the Thirteenth, we can observe how the talisman—or absence thereof—has affected the progress of the void's corruption.
Y'shtola: If I could impose upon you to open the gate, Your Excellency?
Varshahn: Ah, yes, of course...
Y'shtola: We should also be wary of voidsent slipping through while we conduct our experiment. Estinien, you are to keep Nidhana safe from harm.
Estinien: As you say...
Y'shtola: You had best be on your guard, as well.

What will you say?
> I always am.
Y'shtola: And we are glad for it.
> Froth and foam!
Y'shtola: Oh? Are you volunteering to join the nixies? I could shrink you down, you know...
> ...
Y'shtola: Please, just...do me a favor, and forget you ever saw that.

Y'shtola: Let us begin, shall we?
Y'shtola: Nixies! Into the void!
Nixies: Water, water, froth and foam! Into shadowed realms we roam!

Optional Dialogue

Y'shtola: We need to wait for a time to ensure a meaningful result. Be patient, and keep watch for any intruders.
Estinien: I struggle to picture Y'shtola as a little girl. Easier to believe she sprang fully formed from one of Master Matoya's cauldrons.
Varshahn: Every time I come here, it reminds me of that dark portal above the Crystal Tower...and the final lash of Azdaja's tail as she plunged into the void.
Nidhana: Sisters save me, I will never see Y'shtola the same way again! “Froth and foam,” indeed!

Stand guard at the designated location. (Cutscene)

| Voiced cutscene |
Y'shtola: I think we've waited long enough.
Y'shtola: Nixies! Return to my side!
Nixie: Water... Water... <splutter>
Y'shtola: Thank you, little one. You did well.
Nidhana: The poor thing. Its essence has been irrevocably warped...
Sinister Voice: Open! Open! OPEN!
Varshahn: We're out of time! I must reseal the voidgate!
Nidhana: They're coming through!
Varshahn: In the name of Alzadaal III... I bar this door unto the void!
Nidhana: Well, that was a sharp lesson in the dangers of voidgates...
Estinien: And what of our experiment? I'd say the results speak for themselves.
Y'shtola: The unprotected nixie has suffered extensive aetheric corruption. As Nidhana observed, it's well on its way to becoming a voidsent.
Y'shtola: The one merged with the talisman, however, appears unaffected. I sense no changes to its equilibrium.
Y'shtola: Rest now, little ones.
Estinien: G'raha's theory was correct, then.
Y'shtola: So it would seem. But while our second familiar was untouched by void energies, the talisman itself shows signs of degradation.
Y'shtola: It was, of course, originally designed to shield the soul from primal tempering—it stands to reason that aetheric corruption of a different sort would affect it differently.
Y'shtola: We may need to modify the warding scale's design to account for the Thirteenth's uniquely unstable aether...
Estinien: You've said much of the void's instability, but my imagination fails me. What manner of place is this broken world?
Y'shtola: Ah, my apologies. I forget that not all of us spend our days sequestered in dusty archives.
Y'shtola: The Thirteenth is a reflection of the Source that was drowned in a flood of Darkness.
Y'shtola: In Emet-Selch's own words, this tragedy was a result of the Ascians' attempts to force a Rejoining. They erred in their haste, and made of that world a "useless void".
Y'shtola: You remember Unukalhai, the unusual child we met during our troubles with the Warring Triad? He explained the fate of the Thirteenth thus:
Y'shtola: The champions of that ill-fated world used the stone known as "auracite" to contain the power of primals.
Y'shtola: But those selfsame heroes were gradually corrupted by the auracite's bleeding energies, transforming into fiends with an endless hunger for aether.
Y'shtola: By the time anyone thought to oppose them, Light's strength had grown too feeble...and the balance of the Thirteenth tipped into eternal Darkness.
Y'shtola: And what of your own experience? Will you tell us of what you observed during NOAH's expedition?
Y'shtola: I can picture it now... The sunless, stygian expanse, infested with legions of aether-starved monstrocities. A void in every sense of the word.
Varshahn: What you have described in such lurid detail is exactly why I hesitate to encourage you.
Y'shtola: Worry not, great Vrtra—our journey into the Thirteenth is but the first leg of a longer voyage.
Y'shtola: A voyage that shall lead us to other reflections—to new mysteries and discoveries—and I mean to be there every step of the way.
Y'shtola: But first I must focus on refining the warding talisman...
Nidhana: Then I can begin work on constructing an artificial Atomos.
Nidhana: Or, I could if I had the relevant manuals to hand. Might I be so bold as to request access to the satrap's family archives?
Nidhana: Ahem... Your Excellency?
Varshahn: Hm...? Oh! Yes, that can be arranged. I will speak to my officials upon our return.
Nidhana: We will see you back in the city, then!
