Until Ala Mhigo fell to the Empire, Valdeaulin had made his home in the Black Shroud. As the Garleans continued their expansion, he lost not only his village, but his wife and daughter as well—his family abducted as test subjects for the fatal gas known as Black Rose. He later joined the Order of the Twin Adder, intent on exacting vengeance against the invaders. The forty-eight-year-old Duskwight would have his chance amidst the ruin of the Praetorium, where he found a wounded Gaius on the verge of death, but ultimately chose to spare the Black Wolf and aid him in his hunt for Ascians.

Valdeaulin was a member of the Ala Mhigan Resistance following the attack and conquering of his homeland by the Garlean Empire. He battled against the Empire often, fighting on the front lines. In a particular skirmish defending his home village, he was knocked unconscious and his entire squadron murdered. When he awoke, he found that his entire village had been rounded up and captured, including his wife and child. He searched for them for several months, before learning the horrific truth: The people of his village had been taken to a Castrum and used as subjects in tests of a deadly chemical weapon later known as Black Rose. Filled with rage, he killed the Imperials at Bittermill and joined the Order of the Twin Adder, swearing vengeance against the Empire.
He participated in the attack on the Praetorium during Operation Archon, but was trapped under rubble when the Castrum collapsed, but managed to survive. He found the barely living Gaius van Baelsar, and prepared to kill him. Before he could land the final blow, however, Gaius asked for mercy, so he may take revenge against the Ascians who manipulated his people. Against his better judgment, Valdeaulin stayed his spells, choosing instead to travel with Gaius so he may kill him once his journey is complete.
After traveling with Gaius for a time, he came to see the machinations of the Ascians and how they corrupted the Garleans. He has since joined his vengeance to Gaius, realizing that he will not truly be satisfied until every Ascian is wiped out.
