The Lost

These are the Hrothgar who have found themselves bereft of a queen and—typically after a lengthy period of mourning—struck out on their own. One can assume with a fair degree of certainty that any male Hrothgar encountered beyond Bozja's borders are of the Lost, as they are far more likely than Helions to abandon their settlement and embrace a nomadic lifestyle. Female Lost are also known to exist—individuals who have, for whatever reason, renounced or refused the ruler's mantle to pursue life on their own terms.

The Lost clan (失われた一族, Ushinawareta ichizoku, meaning The clan of the Lost) are those Hrothgar who have found themselves bereft of their queen and, after a period of mourning, struck out on their own.[1]

History

The Lost are a distinction of Hrothgar as identified by scholars in the same vein as Helions. However, for one reason or another, The Lost have found themselves bereft of their queen's presence. The techniques of the Gunbreaker are said to be inherited from the Hrothgar from Northern Ilsabard and passed down generations. Their weapons are what the Garlean Empire based theirs on after their invasion and eventual takeover.

Physical Features

When doom came to Bozja, the queen of a large community of Hrothgar perished while the bulk of her subjects—conscripts in the imperial army—were away on campaign. The entire group became Lost in one fell swoop, which explains why so many Lost today share the pale fur of this fallen matriarch. Other queens of this coloration do still exist, however, and it bears repeating that a Hrothgar's fur is by no means a definitive indicator of societal status.

Like their Helion brethren, the Lost are massive muscular Leonine humanoids with large fangs and claws, causing mass panic upon finally reaching the shores of Eorzea. The largest of the Lost can get up to 84 inches tall. Though it may seem that The Lost are exclusively found in light and cool colors, this is in fact a misconception resulting from scholars of other races imposing the Helion and The Lost labels upon the Hrothgar for distinction.[1]

Culture

In contrast to the Helions' well-defined social order, the culture of the Lost is characterized by chaos. As many have lived their entire lives adhering to clear roles and strict laws, the sudden loss of structure must be disorienting at best. Many Lost fully embrace the nomadic lifestyle, committing themselves to the search for new purpose. This may mean exacting vengeance for a slain queen, or seeking to honor their late ruler by carrying out her final wishes. Each of the Lost, it is said, is lost in their own way.

Known for often adopting a nomadic life after the loss of their queen, The Lost are known for taking jobs in the trades, namely mercenaries, traders and peddlers, to name a few.[2]

Nomenclature

Hrothgar names are based around Slavic naming conventions, with the word "Thgar" meaning glory. <ref name="Naming">

Like Helions, The Lost base their surnames upon that of their erstwhile queen, foregoing the Helion prefix "A-" in favor of appending the suffix "-sch", meaning "lost" in their tongue. For example, a Hrothgar who previously served a queen "Branka" would adopt the surname "Brankasch."[1]
