Walkthrough

Despite the (Hard) in the name, the trial is not actually more difficult than any other story-mode trial. It is easily completed blind with the Duty Finder.

Steps

Journal

  • Your conversation with the serpent lieutenant is quickly interrupted by the sylph Maxio, who cheerfully informs you that your fellow Scions have completed their investigation into the aetheric activity of the area. Follow him into the Sylphlands, that you might reconvene with your friends in advance of your meeting with the Lord of Levin.
  • As you venture into the Sylphlands, Maxio warns you to stay vigilant, as tempered sylphs and other dangers lurk at every turn. Follow him deeper into the woods in search of your companions.
  • Maxio stops suddenly along the path, confessing to you that he can go no further for fear of suffering the same fate as his tempered brethren. Thanking him for his service, you press on in search of your friends.
  • Despite─or perhaps because of─the touched sylphs' best efforts at causing a disturbance, the Scions have managed to collect aetheric readings throughout the Sylphlands. Based on the latest of these, Papalymo is convinced that he has identified the location of the summoning ritual. Head to the southeast, and investigate the area surrounding the sylphs' aetheryte.
  • Upon approaching the beastman aetheryte, you find yourself in the presence of Lord Ramuh. Though initially dismissive of your attempts at mediation, the primal elects to suspend judgment until you have undergone a trial by combat. Enter the Lord of Levin's domain, and prove your worth!
  • You inform the Twin Adder lieutenant of your encounter with─and subsequent victory over─the primal Ramuh. His shock at the news that your audience culminated in combat soon gives way to joy as he realizes the ramifications of your deed for both Gridania and Little Solace.

Dialogue

Accepting the Quest (Cutscene)

Serpent Lieutenant: I was told that a messenger would be sent as soon as your fellow Scions finished their investigation. I do not imagine it will be much longer.
Maxio: This one returns, and returns with good tidings! Wise ones have finished searching, and have wisely identified the precise location where the touched ones summoned Lord Ramuh!
Serpent Lieutenant: Your timing is impeccable, my fluttery friend! Might you be so kind as to escort this good woman/man to her/his fellow Scions?
Maxio: It would be this one's pleasure, walking one. Please, please come with this one!

Optional Dialogue

Serpent Lieutenant: We are counting on you, [Forename]/ [Twin Adder Rank] [Surname]! Be safe, and godsspeed!

Speaking with Maxio

Maxio: Wise ones have ventured deep, deep within the Sylphlands. These ones must proceed carefully, and keep an eye out for touched ones.

Speaking with Maxio again

Maxio: This one is most sorry, but this one can go no further. Draw too close to Lord Ramuh, and this one may turn mean and nasty like touched ones!
Maxio: And so this one must say farewell for now. Walking one will find wise ones not far from here, to the south. Go in safety, walking one.

Searching for the Scions

Optional Dialogue

Thancred: Ah, there you are. It is you, isn't it?
Yda: Sooo...Thancred is Thancred, Papalymo is Papalymo, Y'shtola is Y'shtola, and you are you, right? Well, that's easy enough to remember. This one's name is Yda, in case walking one was wondering.
...JOKE! I'm joking!
Y'shtola: ...Don't ask. Suffice it to say that we had something of a situation here.

Main Dialogue

Papalymo: ...So it's actually you. I am relieved. For a moment, I thought we were dealing with another one of those confounded sylph tricksters.
Papalymo: I swear, with them wreaking havoc with their skin-changing magicks, it's a wonder I was able to finish taking my measurements.
Papalymo: Yes, it was quite the ordeal. You should have seen the look on Y'shtola's face when the one impersonating you suddenly showed up...
Y'shtola: ...That's quite enough, Papalymo.
Papalymo: ...Ahem. My apologies. It's not like me to ramble so.
Papalymo: At any rate, as I was saying, I have finished measuring aetheric activity in the area, and am pleased to say I have reached an indisputable conclusion─to wit, that Ramuh was called forth in the vicinity of the sylphs' aetheryte!
Papalymo: Come, [Forename]. The Lord of Levin awaits!

Investigating the area around the beastman aetheryte in the Sylphlands (Cutscene)

Ramuh: Thine aura betrays thee, servant of Hydaelyn.
Ramuh: Thou art the Bringer of Light...bane of Ifrit, Titan, Garuda, and Leviathan.
Ramuh: I am Ramuh, guardian of the children of the forest.
Ramuh: Thou tramplest upon sacred soil, Bringer of Light. By what right doth man intrude in this sanctuary of the sylphs?
Ramuh: The Gridanians proffer peace? Their words are born of delusion─thine offer, an insult.
Ramuh: Thou speakest of harmony, yet carest naught for my children's desires. They did but wish to dwell beneath these boughs in solitude─yet even that was too much to ask of man.
Ramuh: Thus did they turn to me for succor. The sentence I pronounce upon thy kind is just.
Ramuh: Gridanian or Garlean, it matters not. The good intent of one excuseth not the misdeeds of the other.
Ramuh: Thy conflicts have brought naught but anguish and misery unto the forest. All blame doth lie with the darkness that resideth in the breast of man.
Ramuh: Whence sprung this calamitous seed? In the beginning, no such duality existed. Were light and dark given form when man was born?
Ramuh: It would explain much. Not least why strife and sorrow follow ever in thy wake. Thou canst not deny the urgings of thine own nature.
Ramuh: Knowing that thy mere presence here portendeth tragedy, wilt thou persist in this pretense of peacemaking?
Ramuh: Thou bearest the crystal which I bestowed upon my wayward charges. That they should entrust so precious a gift to thee...
Ramuh: Thou standest apart from thy kin. Thou art the Bringer of Light, aye...but there is something more in thee...
Ramuh: Very well, I shall consider thy proposal...shouldst thou survive my trial.
Ramuh: If thou wouldst champion the cause of harmony, I must have proof that thou art fit to play the role. Weather mine ire, and prove to me thereby that thou hast strength enough to stay the Darkness which threateneth to consume thee.
Ramuh: Yet if thou shouldst be found wanting, know that all men shall perish in the storm of my judgment!
Ramuh: Come to me, Bringer of Light. I shall await thee on the field of battle!
Y'shtola: Urianger. It is rare indeed to find you so far from a tome.
Urianger: The Lord of Levin himself... Never till this day had I looked upon his visage save in painted renderings, made faint by time... Ever shall this scene remain etched in my mind's eye... Ahem. Beg pardon, my lady.
Urianger: I must beg thine aid on a point of research. If thou art resolved to face Lord Ramuh, I would ask thy leave to observe the event...

Confronting Ramuh at the Striking Tree Hard

Duty Dialogue

Ramuh: Thou art brave, Bringer of Light.
Yet bravery alone shall not convince me of thy worth!
Ramuh: Prove thy words are more than empty banter!
Ramuh: I pronounce thy sentence!
By the radiance of eld be thee judged!
Ramuh: This battle shall decide thy fate.
Canst thou weather mine awakened ire!?
Ramuh: Thy judgment is nigh...
To me, mine arbiters!
Ramuh: Art thou truly of man?
Thy strength exceeds mine expectations...

Post duty Cutscene

Ramuh: I have taken thy measure, Bringer of Light.
Ramuh: And I judge thee a worthy champion. The task of excising the sin that hath taken root in man's heart is thine.
Ramuh: Shrink not from employing thy strength in service to the forest, and the wider realm beyond. Like hungering shadows do the enemies of harmony gather, and meekness will but feed them.
Ramuh: If man is to be delivered from the Dark, it shall be by thy guiding Light alone. Stray not from the path, for if thou dost, thy people shall be truly lost...
Urianger: Thou hast slain the Lord of Levin. A regrettable act...but a necessary one.
Urianger: In witnessing thy struggle, a truth hath been revealed unto me. If I mistake not, it may yet prove a chink in the eternal armor of the Ascians.
Urianger: But let us conclude our present business. I shall expound upon my findings at the Rising Stones anon.

Reporting to the serpent lieutenant in Little Solace

Serpent Lieutenant: [Forename]/ [Twin Adders Rank] [Surname], you have returned! Dare I ask how Ramuh received your visit?
Serpent Lieutenant: ...He challenged you to a test of arms!? It is well, then, that you have some experience in such matters!
Serpent Lieutenant: The peoples of both Gridania and Little Solace will be relieved to hear that the Lord of Levin has accepted you as the forest's champion of peace.
Serpent Lieutenant: You have performed a monumental duty this day, Forename. The Elder Seedseer must be informed of your deeds at once!
