Naturalists are divided on what they believe to be the true function of the diplocaulus's pair of signature arrow-like protrusions on its head. While some claim they serve as quasi-fins allowing the creature to make swift directional adjustments while swimming, others still claim that they are used in mating, similar to a peacock's plumage.
