A brand is a sigil of affiliation on the realmships of the Fourth. It is assigned by birth.
About
Brands has been introduced after the people of the Fourth left the surface and started living on the realmships. To regulate ressources the movement of the people between the realmships needed to be regulated, so they receive the brand of the realmship at birth[1]. The brand of a person can be revealed by a "reading rod", a magical device that is weilded by runesmiths.
