Barrier

Barriers (often called shields) have the ability to absorb a certain amount of incoming damage before a player loses HP. (Some instances of unique damage are able to bypass barriers.)

PvE

In PvE, barriers are primarily granted by barrier healers ( scholar and sage) and tanks, but several other jobs are able to generate barriers, primarily for themselves. As certain barriers grant additional effects when they are completely absorbed, there is a priority system that determines the order in which barriers are consumed to absorb damage.

In this table, any entries on the same priority either cannot coexist (self-buffs from different jobs) or are the same buff from multiple sources.

  3. a b Crest of Time Borrowed changes priority at level 84 because Enhanced Arcane Crest grants Crest of Time Returned to nearby party members when the barrier is completely absorbed.
  4. Brutal Shell may also be granted to party members with Heart of Stone / Heart of Corundum if under its effect upon execution of those mitigation actions.

In PvP, all barriers are consumed based on time they are applied. New barriers that are applied after each other will take higher priority. As with PvE, some barriers take priority on consumption due to extra job mechanics and interactions, though their priority of consumption remains the same – based on time of application.

The table below denotes priority barriers. Barriers not listed are considered to be "low priority".

Priority Barriers

Forte Grants Thorned Flourish if the barrier is fully consumed, allowing for a usage of Vice of Thorns, which is a stun.
