Walkthrough
During this quest, Gulool Ja Ja will challenge the player to a duel, which will be in the form of a solo instance. If the player is a Viper during the battle, Gulool Ja Ja will comment on it.
- Fancy Bladework: Roomwide physical damage.
- Dual Blows: One of Gulool's swords will begin glowing and have a one pip over it, followed by his other swords, which will have a two pip. These indicate late telegraphed half-room cleaves in the order they glow.
- Steeled Strike: Gulool will summon a glowing white X covering most of the arena, indicating two late telegraphed line AoEs covering the X.
- Coiled Strike: Gulool summons two blade symbols on the arena that will each have a shadow rotating towards one direction. This indicates two wide late telegraphed conal AoEs, leaving narrow safe regions directly behind the blade symbols outside of the shadow.
- Battle Breaker: Gulool becomes untargetable and knocks the player back, immobilizing them for several seconds. After a cutscene, he will begin using summoning circle AoEs in a zigzag pattern, along with baited AoEs on the player.
- Burning Sun: Summons three sets of red circle AoE telegraphs that briefly appear and disappear. When the resolve, some will also leave behind fire puddles.
- Brawl Ender: A telegraphed knockback in the direction of the arrows, also doing physical damage. Position to be knocked back away from a puddle, or use knockback resist.
- Doubling: Summons three untargetable Gulool Ja Ja's Shade adds, which jump to a wall (leaving half the room empty) and use Glory Blaze, late telegraphed line AoEs. Move to the empty side.
- Doubling: Now summons one untargetable Gulool Ja Ja's Shade add, which will sequentially spawn a tower (The Thrill) that will need to be soaked. During this, Gulool will cast The Thrill himself, spawning another tower that will need to be soaked afterwards.
- Doubling: Now spawns one add and is combined with Coiled Strike and two Steeled Strike telegraphs that resolve in sequence.
- Doubling: Now spawns six adds, three of which will use the Glory Blaze line AoEs while Gulool uses Coiled Strike. Afterwards, one of the adds will use Steeled Strike, while the other two and Gulool will use The Thrill, spawning three towers in succession.
- Later on in the battle, the player will be stunned again and will need to complete an Active Time Maneuver. If successful, the battle will conclude.
Steps
Journal
- Wuk Lamat needs to pay a visit to the palace.
- Wuk Lamat departs for Vollok Shoonsa, leaving you to your own devices. The suggestion to return to the For'ard Cabins and take a well-deserved rest, however, does sound very tempting...
- You head back to the cabins only to find a Landsguard soldier awaiting your arrival. It seems the Dawnservant has summoned you to the palace, and you are to present yourself to the gate guard stationed outside Sunperch.
- Heeding the soldier's advice, you proceed to your appointment dressed for battle. Yet for what reason might such preparations be warranted?
- Upon entering Sunperch, Gulool Ja Ja soon makes it clear that his summons was an invitation to duel. You spar against the massive Mamool Ja, his powerful and viper-fast blows keeping you on your toes, until he is at last satisfied with your performance. Impressed by your battlecraft, the Dawnservant follows the bout with a father's earnest request to watch over his daughter. It is then that Wuk Lamat arrives. She chides Gulool Ja Ja for stealing away her champion, and exits the throne room with you in tow.
- Annoyed by her father's antics, Wuk Lamat wonders if Gulool Ja Ja has been bothering you with things other than duels─a query you deflect with a noncommittal answer. The Dawnservant's plea remains at the forefront of your mind, however, as you accompany the Third Promise on the continuation of her journey.

Dialogue
Right then, I have some things to take care of at the palace.
While you can pass the time however you like, I'd suggest you head back to the cabins.
After all, even heroes need to rest, and we still have a big journey ahead of us!
At last...
Welcome back, madam/sir. You've had a Landsguard messenger most anxiously waiting on your return.
Forename of the Third Promise's entourage? I've been all over the city looking for you.
The Dawnservant summons you to the palace. You are to present yourself to the gate guard stationed outside Sunperch at your earliest convenience.
Oh, and one more thing: you are not to mention this visit to Wuk Lamat.
The Dawnservant awaits you within. While I was not informed of the reason for your audience, in terms of attire, I would suggest full battle regalia.
You must be a Disciple of War or Magic of level 92 or above to proceed.
If he had his way, Papa would keep dueling until the day he dies.
Even now, I know of only three people who didn't need to be carried away after their bouts: Zoraal Ja, your lance-wielding friend Estinien, and yourself.
You really do live up to your fearsome reputation!
I'm curious, though. Did Papa want anything else of you?
What will you say?
A small favor, nothing more.
Just a sparring partner.
Well, if that's all it was...
Cutscene 1
Forgive me this sudden summons.
When I learned my daughter's champion was back in the city, I couldn't resist the opportunity.
And they call me Head of Resolve for good reason─old as I am, I have not lost a battle worthy of the name since the day I took the throne.
And I've been craving a proper challenge. The lance-wielder, Estinien, he fought well enough...but our bout was ended before a victor could be decided.
Judging by the sailors' gossip, you are a warrior of renown in your homeland.
Yet I wonder─with all your deeds done and victories won...
Are you warrior enough to stand against me?
[HEARTY LAUGHTER - “Gwahahaha!”]
A spirited answer! Why not, indeed!
[AMUSED SNORT]
Not even the slightest hint of fear... I knew you were no pretender.
[AMUSED SNORT]
Do you think me unworthy? I'll soon change your mind!
The battle rage is upon me! I'll stop short of killing you, of course...but expect no other mercies!
Come! Ready your arms and show me the truth of the tales!
Cutscene 2
I've brought my full strength to bear against opponents before, but you are the first to withstand it.
Even with my Head of Reason asleep, I never expected you to give me so much trouble...
Estinien did not exaggerate: you are a force to be reckoned with!
[HEARTY LAUGHTER - “Gwahahaha!”]
Koana's recruits are no less sharp─as one might expect of Galuf's countrymen. They saw the flaws in our claimants from the outset.
The other two, though... They dismiss comrades willing to point out their shortcomings, and no good can come of it...
Now, a confession. I said I craved a challenge, and that was no lie...but I had another reason for calling you here.
I had to judge for myself if you were fit to attend my beloved daughter.
In some respects, she is much like me: hot-headed and prone to rush into danger.
Will you hear my question and answer me plainly? Address me not as the ruler of Tuliyollal, but a concerned father.
But one with your adamant defense could shield Lamaty'i from those who would do her harm.
But one with your talents could readily dispatch the threats that bar Lamaty'i's way.
But one with your healing touch could sustain Lamaty'i even as she contends with the most fearsome of foes.
Thank you.
Then tell me, given your journey together thus far, what is your impression of Lamaty'i?
Whether it be as Third Promise, or just a companion on the road. Speak your mind.
[AMUSED SNORT]
A tactful response. But agreed: she is not ready for the throne. Not yet.
Gwahahaha!
Well, I did ask you to speak your mind. But agreed: she is not ready for the throne. Not yet.
Lamaty'i thinks she understands our many peoples─their histories, their cultures, their beliefs. But she knows only what she's seen in the capital.
And it's not only her who concerns me. Even this early in the contest, you must have realized...
As potential rulers, all four claimants are lacking.
This is why I elected to hold the rite of succession─not to choose a fitting candidate, but to cultivate one.
And if no one has impressed me by the end of it, then to no one will I yield my throne.
As a parent, I pray that my children rise to the occasion...
With outsiders dragged into my game, I am also hopeful that the different perspectives you and your companions have to offer will inspire them to grow.
I imagine you in particular have traveled many lands. Known many peoples and cultures─loved them and been loved in turn.
Guide Lamaty'i as you think best. Walk at her side and, when needed, push her to walk ahead.
I knew it!
You were dueling behind my back, weren't you!
I swear, just as I was learning newfound respect for my father...
Let's take our leave of this battle-mad oaf before he calls on the rest of my entourage.
There I was, about to sit down for some of Namikka's cooking, when I heard that Papa had sent for you.
Gwahahaha!
I see there is no point in denying it!
You needn't worry, Daughter: I took care not to inflict lasting injuries.
You and your ally may return to the contest without disadvantage. No harm done!
Watch over her, champion.
