Journal
- The expedition messenger casts his gaze expectantly about the harbor.
- At High Tide Harbor you meet a messenger sent by Ketenramm to find you. He soon fetches the legendary Eorzean explorer, who proceeds to outline his plans for one final voyage─sights firmly set on Shades' Triangle, a fabled and feared stretch of ocean in the Indigo Deep. Convinced that your aid will guarantee the expedition's success, he invites you to join his crew on a journey into the unknown. Having assented, you are to speak with Ofangeim, one of the expedition crew members waiting on the pier.
- Ofangeim, the ship's navigator, informs you that the treacherous storms Shades' Triangle is famed for will briefly subside, leaving calm seas and perfect sailing conditions in their wake. Gesturing to the skiff moored nearby, she explains that the main vessel is waiting beyond the shallows, and bids you report to her when ready.
- After making the necessary preparations for the voyage ahead, you speak with Ofangeim and set off for seas uncharted...
- On board the expedition vessel, Ketenramm reveals that the stormy waters of Shades' Triangle conceal a strange, crescent-shaped island, the sight of which is said to spell certain doom for all who sail too close. Listening to his explanation, it is clear that such cautionary tales have had quite the opposite effect on the veteran sailor. Still malms away from your destination, Ketenramm suggests you get to know the crew risking their lives alongside you on this perilous adventure.
- ※In the event that you leave the ship, you may resume your journey by speaking with the expedition ferryman at High Tide Harbor.
- You meet the crew and hear their motivations for joining the expedition─not to mention a curious account of a wayward weaponsmith currently languishing in the ship's hold. Ketenramm is no doubt curious to hear your impressions of the crew.
- Ketenramm announces that the ship will soon enter Shades' Triangle. The crew assume their positions, steeled for the final approach.
- As the crew contend with the island vanishing and reappearing at will, you hear a voice ring out over the waves, beckoning you onward. Shortly after, the ship lurches violently, seized by some arcane power as blinding light engulfs the vessel. As the white pall dissipates, you find yourselves docked at the island's crumbling stone pier. The ship is unscathed but locked firmly in place─perhaps held by the same force that transported you and the crew to these shores. For his part, Ketenramm is quietly pleased about the prospect of being trapped on the isle, and ventures forth with a grin.
- ※Should you leave the Occult Crescent, you will be able to return via High Tide Harbor whenever you wish to rejoin the expedition.
- You gather by the entrance to a walled settlement nestled above the dock. Expecting the island to be uninhabited, Ketenramm is intrigued to find signs of civilization, albeit seemingly long absent. No doubt this will be but the first of myriad mysteries awaiting you once the expedition gets underway.
Dialogue
Accepting the quest
Expedition Messenger: You're [Forename], aren't you? Just the (wo)man I was after, as it happens! Expedition Messenger: Old Ketenramm tasked me with finding you. Says he's got a proposition for you. Expedition Messenger: Stay right there, I'll go fetch him.
Cutscene
Ketenramm: Apologies for collarin' you like this, but I was hopin' we could parley before ye took leave of Tuliyollal. Ketenramm: I'll cut right to the chase. I want you on board for me final expedition. Ketenramm: Before I get into the particulars, allow me to spin a quick yarn. Ketenramm: These days, any Eorzean sailor worth their salt bound for Tural'll take the established route, an' skirt the southern Indigo Deep. Ketenramm: But back when maps of the realm were nothin' but blank parchment past Vylbrand, all we had was the allure of the horizon to guide us. Most of me fellow explorers weighed anchor and cut a course due west, headin' straight for adventure... Ketenramm: Alas, most were lost to the waves. Me crew and I reached Tural on account of us rangin' northward and avoidin' the same treacherous waters that claimed them. Ketenramm: That stretch of the Deep came to be known as Shades' Triangle. I had a notion to solve its mysteries on behalf of me fallen comrades, but after arrivin' on these shores, it was the land, not the sea, that promised adventures anew. Ketenramm: Once I'd settled here and disbanded the expedition, I never did get the opportunity. Ketenramm: But then I crossed paths with a certain realm-renowned adventurer and began to wonder... Ketenramm: Aye, somethin' told me that with yer help I'd finally shed light on the mystery of those accursed waters. So, how about it? Will ye join this old explorer on one final jaunt?
What will you say? > It'd be my honor! > You had me at "mystery." But what of your duties at the palace?
< It'd be my honor! > Ketenramm: Heh. Knew I could count on you.
< You had me at "mystery." But what of your duties at the palace? > Ketenramm: Not to worry. I propose all this with the full backin' of the Dawnservants.
Ketenramm: Truth be told, even before Gulool Ja Ja asked me to watch over Koana and Wuk Lamat, I feared I'd never sail again... Anyroad, I sensed the pair were wise to me worryin', so I laid it all bare.
Koana: ...And you say the mystery of Shades' Triangle has haunted you since? Koana: The region of which you speak is an impediment to trade with foreign nations. Any effort to unravel its secrets would ultimately benefit Tuliyollal.
Wuk Lamat: Sounds like it might be the last chance you get. Especially if you're hoping to get [Forename] involved. Wuk Lamat: Besides, Papa would turn in his grave if we barred his old friend from one final voyage. I say follow your heart, Tankwa.
Ketenramm: I'm sure ye'll be wantin' more details, but I'd like to set sail sooner rather than later. Let's reconvene once we've put a few malms between us an' the harbor. Ketenramm: The ship is ready an' waitin'─had her sent over from Limsa especially. When yer ready, speak with Ofangeim over on the pier.
Speak with Ofangeim
Ofangeim: [Forename], I presume. Ketenramm told me all about you. The name's Ofangeim, navigator by trade. Ofangeim: They say Shades' Triangle is wracked with storms year-round, but a closer look at the charts'll tell you that ain't strictly true. For a brief season the skies clear and the seas calm, hence why the old explorer's eager to weigh anchor. Ofangeim: What's the matter? Don't tell me yer wary of clamberin' onto this little rowboat... Ofangeim: Hahaha! We're not rowin' all the way to Shades' Triangle! Our vessel's waitin' out beyond the shallows. Ofangeim: Anyroad, when yer good an' prepared to leave, just say the word!
Optional Dialogue
Expedition Ferryman: Once you're ready, I'll row us out to the vessel in this here skiff.
Speak with Ofangeim again
Ofangeim: Ready to plot a course for waters unknown, are ye?
Depart for Shades' Triangle? (yes/no)
Ofangeim: Don't know whether to respect yer mettle or question yer sanity, but welcome aboard. Shades' Triangle, here we come!
Cutscene
Ketenramm: Plain sailin' thus far. Might be time to talk about our destination. Ketenramm: Shades' Triangle is a churnin' mess of storms, so every time a vessel goes missin' in the region, most blame the treacherous conditions.
Ofangeim: But hear this: there are records of the last ship seekin' to chart those waters, and the message they relayed to their escort is passin' strange... Ofangeim: “Conditions fair. Crescent-shaped isle sighted in vicinity. Potential safe haven during storms. Attempting to make landfall.” Ofangeim: They never made it back to port, despite the calm seas.
Ketenramm: Folks've taken to callin' the island the “Occult Crescent” ever since. They say it's naught but a shiftin' mirage that claims the lives of all who sight it.
Ofangeim: Everyone on board knows the risks involved on a voyage like this, but there ain't nothin' like the thrill of the unknown to trump good sense.
Ketenramm: Aye, the whiff of mystery an' the promise of new discovery's hard to resist. Am I right in thinkin' the same applies to you, adventurer? Ketenramm: Anyhow, why don't ye get acquainted with the rest of the crew? Ketenramm: I'll be here checkin' the charts. Once ye've got the measure of the folks riskin' their hides along with you, come and find me.
Speak with your fellow crewmates
Expedition Surveyor (6.7, 6.2)
Expedition Surveyor: This ain't me first trip to these waters. I've sailed close to Shades' Triangle to survey the weather many a time. Only on the clearest days, when the sea's flat as glass, do ye get a glimpse of the isle. Expedition Surveyor: It looks unremarkable from a distance, but that's exactly what the poor bastards who went missin' must've thought. Never did pluck up the courage to take a closer peek─curious as I was. Expedition Surveyor: But when I heard Ketenramm was leadin' an expedition into the heart of the Triangle, I signed right up. Don't get me wrong, I've still got me reservations, but when I think of whatever's waitin' for us in those waters, it's the excitement that wins out!
Expedition Surveyor: Conditions in Shades' Triangle are perfect today. I've pored over every ilm of the charts─ain't no way me predictions are wrong!
Expedition Secretary (6.4, 5.9)
Expedition Secretary: But it wasn't Tural they were aiming for. They'd left Eorzea westward bound for Hingashi─they didn't count on a great big continent lying between them and their destination. Expedition Secretary: Once they were ashore, they soon forgot all about the Far East. Eventually, my grandfather settled, and here I am, three generations later. Expedition Secretary: By all accounts, journeying with Ketenramm is life-changing. I mean that in the best possible sense, of course.
Expedition Secretary: I've visited Eorzea once or twice, but I'm a Turali, through and through.
Expedition Prospector (6.1, 5.9)
Expedition Prospector: This isn't some foolhardy treasure hunt. No, solving the isle's secrets will be worth more than any glittering trinkets. Expedition Prospector: And if we can open up safe passage to the island, there's potential to establish a permanent landing. Just imagine the boon to foreign trade that would bring... Expedition Prospector: All of which is to say, there's more at stake here than lining our pockets.
Expedition Prospector: Given the island's isolation, some of our financiers think it may be harboring a wealth of untapped natural resources. We'll conduct a preliminary survey, at any rate.
Expedition Provisioner (5.7, 6.1)
Expedition Provisioner: There's no telling what awaits us on the island, which is why we've enlisted the help of experts and artisans to supplement our crew. There's one fellow we're all wishing we'd steered clear of, though... Expedition Provisioner: After we left port, I caught the crazed fool trying to launch one of the lifeboats. We managed to lock him in the hold, but the vidraal set about drinking all the rum in sight. Expedition Provisioner: In the end, we tied him up and stuffed him in one of the barrels he'd drained dry.
Expedition Provisioner: <sigh> He came so highly recommended, but it seems we've hired nothing more than a drunken lunatic... What are we to do with him?
Optional
Ofangeim: This vessel's the only one venturin' into Shades' Triangle, but there'll be other ships stationed nearby to relay messages back an' forth by linkpearl. Ofangeim: If anythin' happens to us, they'll get word to the capital.
Ketenramm: It'll be a while yet before we reach Shades' Triangle. In the meantime, I suggest ye speak with yer fellow shipmates.
Speak with Ketenramm
Ketenramm: Looks like ye had a good chat with the crew. Ketenramm: That's the thing with seafarin', a close-knit crew is indispensable out on the open sea. I know there's talk about me feats in reachin' Tural, but in truth I couldn't have done it without me fellow explorers. Ketenramm: Wherever the winds might take us, I consider it me duty to get us all there and back in one piece. Ketenramm: Right, we'll be enterin' Shades' Triangle any moment now. Look sharp!
Cutscene
Lookout: Land ho!
Ketenramm: Hold steady. We sail straight for her!
Ofangeim: Aye aye!
Ketenramm: Hm? Where's that blasted island? We just had it in our sights...
Lookout: Land spotted off the starboard stern!
Ofangeim: What? Don't tell me we careened right past it!
Ketenramm: Get this hulk turned around! Ketenramm: Lost sight of the damned thing again! “Shiftin' mirage” was right on the money... Ketenramm: If the isle itself was movin', the waves'd be surgin' right over the bulwark. This is no natural phenomenon─somethin's messin' with our perception...
???: Ye deserved, heed my call...
What will you say? > Deserved or not, onwards we sail. > Er, I heed, but I'm not sure I follow...
Ketenramm: Who are ye talking to? Ketenramm: A strange voice, ye say? I didn't hear a thing... Ketenramm: What in the!?
Steersman: I've lost control o' the rudder! It's like somethin's reelin' us in!
Ketenramm: Gods... Ketenramm: It couldn't be the island, could it...? Ketenramm: How's the hull lookin'?
Ofangeim: No obvious damage, but the ship's stuck fast─almost as if we've dropped anchor.
Ketenramm: Perfectly docked, and without a single scratch... There ain't a helmsman alive who could've managed that.
Ofangeim: I fear she'll end up like that if we try an' shift her...
Ketenramm: I reckon we were brought here by some sort of arcane trickery. Trapped too, most likely. Ketenramm: Heh. Magicked right to our destination... Quite the stroke of luck, if ye ask me! Ketenramm: Well, there's nothin' for it but to get this expedition underway!
Optional Dialogue
Ofangeim: With the ship pinned in place, there's not much we can do 'cept take a look around.
Speak with Ketenramm
Ketenramm: That voice ye heard on the ship... I'm startin' to wonder whether that wasn't some kind of summons. I'm glad to have you with us, regardless. Ketenramm: As for the isle itself, I'd assumed it was uninhabited. Certainly wasn't expecting to come across this...phantom village. Ketenramm: Like as not, there's some sort of ward encompassin' the island to keep us here. Ketenramm: That said, there's a chance aetherial currents could circumvent the ward, assumin' ye can tap into one. Might be worth a try if adventure calls you elsewhere. Ketenramm: Anyroad, as much as I'd like to gather the crew an' get stuck right in, we'd better secure the perimeter first. Ketenramm: Oh, and I thought I'd give you a journal to jot down yer findings along the way. Ketenramm: Figure there's more than a few folks out there who'd appreciate a record of yer exploits here. Fill those pages an' give them somethin' to sink their teeth into.
System: If you wish to return to Tuliyollal at any point during the expedition, interact with the aetherial current by the moored ship. The corresponding current at High Tide Harbor facilitates travel back to the Occult Crescent. System: The Occult Record is now available under Collection in the Duty section of the main menu. System: New entries for prominent terms and characters will be added to the record as you explore the Occult Crescent.
Optional Dialogue
Ofangeim: I'll stay here and keep an eye on the ship. The two of ye'd better secure the area.
