Dataqi encampment

The Dataq (or Dataqi when described collectively) is one of the Xaela tribes from the Azim Steppe, who are featured in a series of FATES. Owing to their nomadic lifestyles, they have no permanent home on the Steppe. Their encampment will appear, move, and disappear, depending on progress in their associated FATE chain.

The Dataq cover quite possibly the most area in their migrations, for they rarely stop in one area for longer than a few bells. Sleeping is all done in the saddle, and tents are only used when the rains are heavy and unbearable. This is, however, less a hard rule and more an ideal for which they strive, even if they do indeed travel further and longer than any other tribe.[1]

Notable Members

Khalja of the Dataq

"The Steppe is full of enemies. This is why we must embrace newfound friends."

The forty-seven-year-old khan of the Dataq was blessed with his parents' foresight and further honed his survival instincts through decades spent in the saddle. On the exceedingly rare occasion he knows not the best course of action, he consults the shagai--dice fashioned from the bones of livestock. In this way, he can hearken to the whispers of the old gods, much like the Mol through their ugdan. A peerless horseman skilled with both blade and bow, he can act as both hunter and warrior as circumstances require, and is admired by all as a consummate leader.

Sokhatai of the Dataq

"No more blood need be spilled this day!"

The niece of the khan is regarded by his[2] children as an older sibling, owing to their close relationship. Tragically, her parents and husband were claimed by a sickness, and for a long time she nursed an all-consuming sadness. However, in her endless travels with her tribe, she has slowly come to terms with her loss, and has begun to look to the future with hope once more. Owing to her mother's Qalli heritage, the woman of twenty-eight summers is a talented singer and poet--so much so that Altani cannot help but steal glances at her whenever possible. She also enjoys cooking, and is quite proud of her khorkhog recipe.

Anarba of the Dataq

"A bowl of hot khorkhog is reward enough for the day's hunt!"

The khan's son of three and twenty years is, in sharp contrast to his cool-headed father, emotional and reckless. When the tribe crossed paths with Gurbesu[3] in their travels, it was the first time Anarba had met a woman his age not of the Dataq. He quickly grew infatuated with her, and was heartbroken when they had to bid farewell to one another.

Altani of the Dataq

The daughter of the khan spent her childhood in the company of horses and sheep, and so developed a love of animals. Despite her young age of seventeen, she is as skilled as any adult when it comes to milking, shearing, and felting, and is no stranger to the sight of blood. Adept with a spear, she will stand and fight to protect the tribe's herds if need be.

Lore

Owing to their nomadic lifestyles, some tribes of the Azim Steppe are rarely encountered by outsiders, and thus little is known of them. Should a traveler chance to cross paths with one such tribe, they would do well to avail themselves of this rare opportunity to learn more of their ways.

— Encyclopedia Eorzea vol 2, page 112, "The Dataq and Goro Tribes

As two of the smaller tribes to roam the Steppe the Dataq and Goro rarely take part in the Naadam and so wield little influence. Nevertheless, their unique customs warrant attention.
The Dataq, for one, are arguably the tribe most most committed to a nomadic lifestyle, refusing to remain in one place longer than several bells. To this end, they will even sleep in the saddle, and only utilize their tents for shelter when caught in torrential rains. The khan himself, however, would be the first to admit that this is less a hard rule and more an ideal for which they strive, even if they do indeed travel further and longer than any other tribe [...].
