Lore
Since mankind could lift fallen boughs from the earth have spears played an integral part in their everyday lives. Once widely used for hunting prey, the simple, yet deadly weapons are now found commonly on battlefields from Vylbrand in the west to Hingashi in the east, though their construction and design vary greatly by region.
The earliest of spears were carved from the hearts of hardwood oaks and elms, their tips sharpened into piercing points. Later, these tips were replaced with flint, obsidian, or even bone heads that were secured to the haft with cured leather. At the advent of the bronze age, stone heads gave way to ones forged from metal, complete with deep sockets which could be bolted to the spear’s haft, ensuring the blade not detach upon impact with a target. Knowledge of lighter, stronger alloys, as well as improved forging and molding techniques eventually saw even the wooden hafts of spears fall into disuse, metal lengths supplanting brittle wood and increasing durability and strength twofold.
Prominent Designs
Spear
The most basic of all polearms, the spiked pin at the base of the spear’s head not only secures the head to the haft, but also prevents the weapon from penetrating too far into a victim’s body and becoming lodged beneath sinew and bone.
Trident
Once reserved for the spears used by shoal fishers, the benefits of three-pronged head (increased lethality and the added ability to snare an opponent’s blade) were discovered when, during a time of barren seas, the fishers took their jigs and nets to the bloodsands to earn coin for their families.
Lance
The blunted tip of a lance is not intended to pierce, but rather force an enemy rider from his horse or chocobo. This has not, however, discouraged those of the Lancers’ Guild from contriving other means by which one might disable an opponent with this unwieldy, yet deadly weapon.
Halberd
Part polearm, part axe, this weapon affords its wielder with an array of options in battle, from slashing with the axe blade, to piercing with the pointed spear tip, to tripping or dismounting an opponent with the blade’s many hooks.
Harpoon
For ages have these heavy, barbed polearms been used on Hyuran fishing vessels to subdue some of the Deep’s most formidable creatures. When (as a result of overharvesting) a large population of Hyur emigrated from the Eorzean coastline into the Black Shroud, they brought with them their harpoons, which were soon adapted for hunting amongst the trees.
Guisarme
Much like the halberd, the guisarme is a combination of two distinctly different weapons—the polearm and the scythe. And, as is the case with the halberd, the guisarme can be used not only to both reap and transfix, but also to hook and trip.
Iwa-Toshi
Technically not a spear, but a long-hafted blade of Far Eastern origin known as a “naginata,” Iwa-toshi was used for many years in the defense of a sacred Doman temple until its wielder died and the weapon was sealed in the temple’s sacristy. When the temple was destroyed during the Garleans’ religious purge, the relic was confiscated and presented to a high-ranking military official.
Grasitha
Described in the Enchiridion as one of the lost treasures of the See, Grasitha is said to have been created on the battlefield by Ser Branthuc the Meek during the final march of Thordan’s twelve. Having shattered his sword on the scales of a mighty drake, the knight reshaped the sundered blade into a spear using naught but the warhammer of a fallen companion and the pyre upon which his brothers burned.
Thavnairian Partisan
Parades held to exhibit the ruling houses' military prowess are common occurrences in Radz-at-Han, and much coin is spent outfitting their participants with elaborately decorated weaponry that the lesser houses might know their place. That said, the spears on display are not merely for show, for under the glitter and gilding lies the potential to wreak untold havoc.
Thundercloud
Its head carved from the horn of a Coerthan behemoth, a single strike from Thundercloud can prove as deadly, if not more, than a storm of levinbolts. Rare leathers have been wound about the overlong stock to provide the wielder with enhanced grip, while the butt has been outfitted with a razor-sharp trident as a means of impaling pursuers.
Ryunohige
Despite the Hingan name (which translates loosely to “dragon whisker”), this spear discovered by Estinien Wyrmblood on one of his many wanderings is a relic of the ancient age wherein dragon and man lived in harmony. How it came to be called thus is a matter for much speculation, though one theory suggests that its creator may have been of Far Eastern birth.
Narval
Nigh five score summers past, a Near Eastern trader, seeking favor within the royal court of Ala Mhigo, presented King Manfred with a gift whose mere procurement saw more than ten wives widowed—the twisted horn of a rare Narval. Awestruck by the sheer beauty of his new possession, he immediately ordered the royal smith to create him a lance of the horn, and thus was a new legend born.
Longinus
After taking part in the execution of a falsely accused saint, Longinus—a low-ranking soldier—set off on a journey to seek atonement for lacking the courage to defy his commander’s orders. For the remainder of his life, the guilt-stricken man used the very spear with which he committed his sin to deliver countless souls from evil, ultimately earning him the title, “Zodiac Brave.”
Holy Lance
Several of these ornate polearms were unearthed at Saint Coinach’s Find by a dig team led by anthropogeographer Rammbroes Zasertylsyn. Judging from the numerous stone inscriptions unearthed alongside the weapons, they were most likely employed by elite chevaliers in the early years of the Third Astral Era, before the empire had forsaken religious dogma for science.
Wyvern Spear
This heavy lance was originally a gift from the reigning Ishgardian archbishop to Ser Iolaine Lightheel—a knight oft attributed with the pioneering of the battle maneuver known in common parlance as the Spineshatter Dive. The head was designed to resemble a wyvern in flight, for many of her fellow knights claimed that when Iolaine leapt she would rise higher than the Horde.
Liberator
It is said that upon learning of an impending assault on the remote hamlet of Owl's Nest, Count Baurendouin de Haillenarte rode hard to the settlement where he alone slew seventeen wyverns and two score peistes before harrying, the Horde’s remaining minions back to the mountains. In recognition of this selfless deed, the villagers pooled what little coin they had and commissioned mastersmith Gerolt Blackthorn to craft this extraordinary lance. [1]
