  • Briardien is on the verge of a breakthrough.
  • Briardien is eager to find and tail the shifty merchant from Blaisie's notes, and believes that staking out Mestonnaux's food stall will allow you accomplish just that. Seeing as he could show up any time to procure his standard selection of items from the cookshop proprietor, the inspector urges you make haste and follow him to the Jeweled Crozier. Securing a secluded corner on the bustling street, the two of you keep an eye out for a scar-faced man swathed in silken robes.
  • As you stand watch at the Jeweled Crozier, a man fitting the description of the thug-turned-merchant appears, making a beeline for the food stall. Without taking his eyes off the merchant, Briardien begins pursuing the suspect with you in tow.
  • Briardien is waiting for you at the Arc of the Worthy. According to him, the man you are tailing just passed through the gates and entered the Coerthas central highlands. Curtly reminding you to take care not to be spotted, he bids you follow him.
  • Concealing yourselves behind a large tree, you and Briardien quietly observe a suspicious-looking carriage, into which the fake merchant disappeared but a moment ago. Taking note of the nearby guard, the inspector then asks you to create a diversion by announcing a surprise inspection of their wagon. While you distract the two men, he intends to gain entrance to the carriage and see what he can find.
  • With the chat mode in Say, use your keyboard or the software keyboard to enter any phrase that contains the word “inspection” to draw the fake merchant and his guard's attention.
  • You immediately draw the attention of the fake merchant and his guard by announcing a surprise inspection of their carriage. Marching toward you, they advise you in no uncertain terms to be on your way. However, when it becomes clear you will not─or rather cannot─abide by their wishes, they turn hostile. Charging at you with weapons in hand, it looks as though the only way to stop them would be through force.
  • You overpower the two thugs, and see that they are restrained. As you turn to go and consult with the inspector on how to proceed, you notice he is hunched before a diminutive figure curled upon a thick blanket of Coerthan snow. Check if aught is amiss.
  • You rush over to Briardien who─in hushed tones─is comforting Ulaa. Aside from appearing slightly peaky, she looks to be uninjured. The inspector informs you that, as suspected, she had been abducted, held captive in the fake merchant's carriage. Shortly thereafter, a band of Temple Knights appears, inquiring as to what the earlier racket was about. Briardien quickly narrates the events that had transpired before handing the thug and his lackey over to them and escorting Ulaa back to the scholasticate dormitory.
  • Briardien meets with you at Saint Reymanaud's Cathedral and informs you that Ulaa is being tended to by Sister Gaetelle and is expected to make a full recovery. While she is currently in no condition to be questioned, the interrogation of the kidnappers is already well underway. Alas, it has yet to yield any substantial information regarding the identity of their employer. Though this case seems to grow more convoluted with every passing day, you and the inspector remain hopeful that the truth will eventually be brought to light.

Dialogue

Accepting the Quest

Briardien: Given how poorly this man has covered his tracks, I am inclined to believe that he will come to the Crozier sooner rather than later to procure the usual assortment of goods.
Briardien: Let us head there, [Forename]─we must follow the trail while it is still fresh!
(Optional)
Briardien: Our suspect could arrive at any moment. Keep your eyes peeled.

Keeping an eye out for a suspicious–looking merchant in the Jeweled Crozier (Cutscene)

Briardien: If he comes this way to purchase food and medicines from Mestonnaux as frequently as Blaisie's notes indicate, we shouldn't have long─
Briardien: [Forename]─over there! That scar, those robes...
Briardien: That's our man!
Mestonnaux: A pleasure to see you again, sir. The usual?
Caravan Merchant: Aye─and don't forget the you-know-what.
Briardien: Hurry, [Forename], we mustn't let him out of our sight!

Speaking with Briardien in Foundation

Briardien: Our suspect just passed through the Arc of the Worthy where there are like to be fewer people. Take care not to be spotted.

Following Briardien to the Coerthas central highlands

Briardien: It would appear our suspect is not alone. He has a guard with him.
Briardien: I should like very much to know the contents of that carriage. Keep them distracted while I sneak past, will you?
Briardien: Approach them and announce you are here to conduct a surprise inspection. You will undoubtedly command their full attention for a sufficient amount of time. Are you ready, [Forename]? Very good.

With the chat mode in Say, enter "inspection" to draw the merchant and his guard's attention (Cutscene)

Caravan Merchant: Inspection? What in the seven hells are you on about? You're no Temple Knight─you've no right! Unless...
Caravan Merchant: (I trust the goods have been properly secured, and the carriage is ready for a quick getaway, if necessary?)
Caravan Merchant: Right, then, where were we? Ah, yes. We will not be consenting to your inspection. Now kindly piss off.
Caravan Merchant: Dammit, boy! What're you doing!?
Caravan Guard: My apologies, sir. I-I thought I saw movement around back. Maybe I should go and check─
Caravan Merchant: >> Idiot! Can't you see this goon is intent on starting a fight? Take care of her/him first and conduct your checks after! As for you! You should've run while you still had the chance! <<

Speaking with Briardien (Cutscene)

Briardien: [Forename], it was as we suspected─the thug and his guard have been holding Ulaa hostage in the back of this carriage ever since she vanished. Though this ordeal has undoubtedly caused her a deal of distress, she does not appear to be physically injured.
Briardien: While you are doubtless eager to question her─as I am─she must be given time to rest and recuperate. These two, on the other hand, need not be afforded any such consideration...
Temple Knight Guard: >> You there! What is the meaning of this!? <<
Briardien: Ah, it seems all that earlier commotion has drawn the attention of the guards. Excellent. They can deal with the ruffians.
Briardien: I shall escort Ulaa to the scholasticate dormitory and speak with the instructors. When all has been settled, let us speak again at Saint Reymanaud's Cathedral.

Speaking with Briardien in Saint Reymanaud's Cathedral

Briardien: You should be glad to hear that Ulaa will be fine. Sister Gaetelle is with her now, tending to her needs as we speak.

Post turn in Cutscene

Briardien: I expect she will soon be strong enough to answer our questions. Until then, however, we must make do with what information the Temple Knights can extract from the kidnappers.
Briardien: Unfortunately, whil the ruffians confessed to abducting Ulaa in exchange for a large sum of gil, they have told us little else of value thus far. Apparently their employer draped themselves in such thick furs that they could not even say if they were a man or woman.
Briardien: They claim this cloaked figure offered no explanation as to why they wanted them to snatch the girl and keep her confined to the carriage indefinitely. And so they had no choice but to keep moving, to stay ahead of the Temple Knights and await further instructions.
Briardien: Hopefully, we will learn more as the interrogations progress. I fear, however, our mastermind has cloaked themselves in layer upon layer of secrecy, and it will take more than a few pointed questions to penetrate all of them.
Briardien: But regardless of how well they have hidden their intentions and their identity, we will bring them to justice soon enough!
Briardien: And once we learn all that we can from our friend in the Temple Knights' custody, as well as Ulaa, we will be that much closer to restoring peace to the scholasticate.
To shine the light of truth upon the secrets buried in the dark, the children once more come together, that they may know Her power and Her glory...
