Though not present in all creatures belonging to this class, many elementals also possess the means for intelligent communication—a trait only exhibited in the spoken and select voidsent. As they display many of the same properties as proper elemental beings, man-made egis and Carbuncles are also placed in this grouping.

The Elementals are spirits that are observed by the people of the Black Shroud. The Elementals represent the will of the land, and have unflinching control over it. They can affect the flow of Aether in the woodlands and will punish those who do not respect the forest. The nation of Gridania was founded after the people of Gelmorra received the blessing of the Elementals, swearing to protect the forests for as long as they reside there. Those who speak to the Elementals and pass on their will are known as Hearers, and include the ageless Padjal, who are especially gifted in White Magic thanks to their connection to the Elementals.
