2.3

While many will remember the Calamity for the destruction it wrought upon the realm of Eorzea, that destruction was not without its blessings─one of those being the uncovering of ancient Allagan ruins hidden underneath the war-scarred Carteneau Flats and heretofore unseen for several Astral Eras. When an attempt by the Grand Companies of Eorzea to determine the control of these ruins, and more importantly the secrets they contain, through peaceful negotiations ended in failure, the city-states instead elected to solve the issue of dominion using a form of civilized warfare dubbed Frontline.

— In-game description

The Borderland Ruins (Secure) is a level 30 PvP duty introduced in patch 2.3. It is a 24v24v24 Frontline battle where players must capture and hold select regions to gain a specified tactical rating before time runs out. Before other Frontline maps were added, it was common to refer to this map as just Frontline or Carteneau Flats.

In Patch 6.4 this map was taken off the Frontline rotation, citing upcoming revisions. It was reintroduced in Patch 7.2 with various improvements.

Victory conditions

In order to win, players must reach a specified tactical rating to win. This can be done in one of three ways:

  • Occupying Key Locations
  • Engaging Opposing Teams
  • Defeating monsters

If none of the three alliances reach the specified tactical rating before time runs out, victory is determined by whichever team has the highest tactical rating.

Occupying Key Locations

Key locations such as outposts and Allagan ruins are identified by flags, indicating the Grand Company that currently controls them. At the start of each match, all locations will be unoccupied. By remaining in close proximity to the flags at these locations, players can occupy them to improve their team's tactical rating. However, these areas may turn neutral should enemies come within proximity of a flag controlled by your team, or vice versa. Capturing a key location is indicated with a short upbeat jingle, while losing a flag to an enemy team will be indicated by a short motif of "Torn from the Heavens" in a concerned tone.

Players will usually capture key locations in a clockwise or counter-clockwise pattern. The key location in front of each Grand Company's base is the most challenging as it is tilted in favor of the defenders and many teams will opt to halt their advances there.

The amount of time required to capture a key location varies according to the number of players on one team in proximity to the flag. The greater the number of players, the more quickly a key location will be occupied.

A team's tactical rating will increase by a fixed amount upon claiming key locations, and will continue to increase every three seconds for every location that remains occupied by their Grand Company. The number of points gained per three seconds per key location occupied is as follows:

Number of Key Locations Occupied Tactical Points Gained
1 2
2 4
3 6
4 10
5 12
6 14
7 18
8 20
9 22

When standing in the circle delineated by each flag, players are affected by Sheer Will, greatly increasing damage dealt.

Occupying these locations will prove key to victory, as this greatly affects your tactical rating.

Engaging Opposing Teams

Incapacitating opposing players will also increase your team's tactical rating.

Defeating Monsters

Periodically, the weaponry displacement system will spawn Allagan machinery in the center of the map. The time to the next spawn is indicated by the "Frontline Campaign Info" HUD element. Thirty seconds before the next spawn, one-way personnel displacement panels on the three sides of the map will become active. Entering these panels will grant rapid transportation to the center of the map, along with a three-second Invincibility buff, but will dismount anyone who enters.

The goal in the center of the map is to build Battle High and tactical rating from destroying the current objective and/or KO'ing other players. Once the objective is completed, players will typically resume capturing flags as described above.

The center of the map is situated on a pillar raised a considerable distance off the ground, so players need to be aware of their position relative to the ledges. Many roles (particularly tanks with Full Swing (PvP).png  Full Swing) will take the opportunity to punt players off the ledges; this will often lead to an instant KO from fall damage. The areas around the ramps are the safest as they are protected by guardrails, while the areas around the teleporters are the most dangerous.

Interceptor Drones

Interceptor drones

The interceptor drones are similar to the ones found in the previous version of the map. They will spawn on the six outer hexagonal tiles and use the following ability:

  • Auto Cannon - line AoE with approximately 30-yalm knockback

The party that contributes the most damage will gain tactical points, Battle High and credit for the Prime air i icon1.png  Prime Air I series of achievements. The drones will continuously spawn as long as the weaponry displacement system is in effect. Gold interceptor drones will award more tactical points and Battle High.

Interceptor Command Systems

Interceptor command system

The interceptor command system is an untargetable orb that will spawn in the center hexagonal tile. It is surrounded by a translucent shield; entering this area will inflict a potent Heavy debuff. The primary goal in this phase is to soak tower attacks that spawn in the surrounding tiles. Successfully soaking a tower will inflict minor damage from Explosion and award +4 Battle High as well as tactical points. Failure to soak a tower will result in moderate AoE damage from the attack Unmitigated Explosion.

Interceptor Nodes

Interceptor node

The interceptor node is a tower-like structure that spawns on the center hexagonal tile. When its HP reaches zero, it will instantly regain 100% HP and a green square on its body will light up. This display indicates its current number of points. Once it reaches five points, it will flash, indicating that it can be defeated. Teams will earn tactical points proportionate to their contribution each time the node's HP reaches zero and credit towards the Just say node i icon1.png  Just Say Node I series of achievements.

It will perform the following attacks:

  • Ground Interference - large AoE attack that inflicts heavy damage
  • Heavy Interference - stack marker attack.
  • Targeted Interference - honing attack.
  • Object 130 - massive AoE that inflicts extreme damage; will only use at five points

Of note for all Interceptor Node attacks is that they are indiscriminate. A clever player targeted by Heavy Interference can KO enemy players by catching them in the stack marker AoE while using Guard (PvP).png  Guard.

Patch 7.2 Changes

  • The terrain of the arena has been adjusted.
  • The distribution of key locations has been adjusted.
  • Personnel displacement panels have been added to teleport players to the Heliodrome when weaponry is deployed.
Borderland Secure update1.png
  • The amount of tactical points awarded has been adjusted in accordance with the number of key locations occupied.
  • Players standing near the flag of key locations will be buffed with the status Sheer Will, greatly increasing damage dealt.
  • Interceptor commander systems will now be deployed. This new enemy will use Perimeter Cannon, and by absorbing this attack players may increase their rating and gain tactical points for their team.
  • The pattern of enemy appearances has been adjusted.
  • The actions executed by interceptor drones and interceptor nodes have been adjusted.
  • After defeating interceptor drones, the party that contributed the most damage will gain battle high rating for all its members.
  • When interceptor drones are deployed, an interceptor drone α may appear. Defeating these rare enemies will reward players with more tactical points than regular interceptor drones.
Borderland Secure update4.png
  • When the interceptor node's HP is reduced to zero, it will regain all its HP up to five times. Each time its HP is reduced to zero, teams will be awarded tactical points according to their contribution of damage dealt.
  • Visual and/or audio effects have been added to moments when tactical points are awarded for defeating monsters or successfully navigating their attacks.

  • The Frontline Campaign Info window has been added. The PvP HUD layout can be adjusted in the Borderland Ruins (Secure) in Frontline, or on Wolves' Den Pier.
