Era

The modern recorded history of Eorzea is broken down into various Eras, each numbered in the order they are recorded. The various time periods are broken down into Astral and Umbral eras, the former being times of great prosperity and progress, and the latter being times of great hardship and destruction. The end of each Astral Era is marked by a Calamity of epic proportions, usually something that changes the very landscape in an irreparable way. These Calamities are often associated with one of the six basic Elements, and are preceded with years of mounting tension, war or conquest, and are considered to be the beginning of an Umbral era. The beginning of each Astral Era is often marked by observable periods of growth and recovery, when communities begin to come together and rebuild, forming great nations that would lead the continents future. It is believed that since each Calamity has been associated with one of the basic Elements, and six Calamities have come to pass, that the future of Eorzea is guaranteed to be full of prosperity and peace. This belief was dashed horribly upon the advent of the Seventh Umbral Calamity. It is now a debated topic amongst scholars whether or not any more Calamities could come to pass, and if the land could see repeated elements in their Astral or Umbral states.
