Ceetol Ja is patiently waiting for the Resistance to finish interrogating the captured highwaymen.

— In-game description

Steps

Journal

  • Ceetol Ja is patiently waiting for the Resistance to finish interrogating the captured highwaymen.
  • Ceetol Ja is curious to know whether the Resistance troops have finished their questioning of their suspects in custody. With any luck, information regarding the whereabouts of Chalteaufite and the Steelhog Vessel will have been brought to light.
  • As suspected, the captured bandits are in league with Chalteaufite. The Resistance commander has decided to let one of the culprits go free, and tasks you with following him in the hope he will skulk back to the gang's den. Given the covert nature of the mission and the inherent danger posed by an unknown number of thieves, she judges you to be the ideal candidate for the mission. As one might expect, Ceetol Ja insists on joining you, and you set forth for Ala Ghiri, where the prisoner is due to be released.
  • You rendezvous with Ceetol Ja on the outskirts of Ala Ghiri, where she has already sighted the bandit you intend to follow. It appears that almost immediately after being escorted to the town, he slipped away to rejoin his comrades at their base of operations. If all goes according to plan, he should lead you straight there.
    • ※In the event of failure, return to Ceetol Ja to reattempt the objective.
  • You succeed in following the bandit back to a nearby den, where he is met by the merchants you had previously encountered at Porta Praetoria. Their leader is none other than Chalteaufite himself, and he rules this band of thieves with an iron fist. Your espionage is brought to an abrupt end when Kaqool Ja confronts you, and the mercenary keeps you occupied while Chalteaufite and the others escape. He warns you and Ceetol Ja against involving yourselves any further in their affairs before departing. With your quarry long gone, Ceetol Ja suggests returning to Ala Ghiri and apprising the Resistance there of what transpired.
  • You return to Ala Ghiri and make your report to one of the Resistance soldiers. While there are no further leads regarding the investigation, you will most likely need to continue working closely with the Resistance in order to close the net on Chalteaufite's gang.
  • Ceetol Ja takes great joy in sharing her personal philosophy, based on what she has learned over the course of her journey so far. Though idealistic almost to a fault, her unwavering optimism may prove to be a valuable asset in overcoming the struggles ahead, and she asks that you stand by while she attempts to think of a peaceful road through them.
    • ※The next role quest will be available from Ceetol Ja upon reaching level 96 in any physical ranged DPS class.

Dialogue

Accepting the Quest

Ceetol Ja: At a guess, I'd say the Resistance has been interrogating the captured highwaymen for long enough to get some answers from them.
Ceetol Ja: With any luck, we may even learn more about where we can find Chalteaufite.
Ceetol Ja: I'm sure the commander is as eager as we are to put a stop to his misdeeds. Let's go and see if she's unearthed any useful information.

Speak with the Porta Praetoria commander (cutscene)

Porta Praetoria Commander: Ah, I was just about to send someone for you. Glad you could save me the bother.
Porta Praetoria Commander: I have a favor to ask of you both. I'm going to let the criminal walk free, and I want you to follow him.
Porta Praetoria Commander: You see, our questioning has revealed that the bandits are indeed working with Chalteaufite.
Porta Praetoria Commander: If we cut one of them loose, he might lead us straight to their den. But if the mission fails and you're discovered, you may find yourselves confronted with an untold number of outlaws.
Porta Praetoria Commander: Of course, I considered sending my own men, but I suspect that by now, the bandits know our faces. After Forename's little display in the gully, I'm sure (s)he alone can handle whatever trouble may come his/her way.
Ceetol Ja: I'll go with him/her! If this really does lead us to Chalteaufite, I need to be there when we find him.
Porta Praetoria Commander: Very well, but if it comes to a fight, you stay behind Forename, understood? I'll have the suspect brought over now, but remember what I said, and stay out of sight until he leaves.
Skittish Bandit: Don't look at me like that! I said I'm sorry, didn't I?
Porta Praetoria Commander: Aye, that you did. Several times.
Porta Praetoria Commander: And as much as it galls me, there's no evidence to contradict your claim that you were acting in self-defense, nor is there tangible proof of any other wrongdoing. We've no choice but to let you go.
Porta Praetoria Commander: You have somewhere to go, I presume?
Skittish Bandit: Well, I suppose I can find work loadin' caravans in Ala Ghiri. Seems as good a place as any for makin' a quick gi─ I mean, turnin' over a new leaf!
Porta Praetoria Commander: In that case, I'll have you escorted there. But you'd best keep your nose clean, or we'll come down on you like a tonze of bricks.
Porta Praetoria Commander: Hmph. “Turn over a new leaf,” my arse. He'll be back among his thieving mates before long, and you'll be right there behind him.
Porta Praetoria Commander: For now, all we need to know is the location of their den. Do not attempt to approach the suspects.
Porta Praetoria Commander: I'll send word ahead to Ala Ghiri. Once you have the information we need, report to the troops stationed there.
Ceetol Ja: This is the chance we've been waiting for. Let's go!

Speak with Ceetol Ja outside Ala Ghiri (cutscene)

Ceetol Ja: There he is.
Ceetol Ja: So much for finding work in Ala Ghiri. He's only just arrived, and he's already leaving town.
Ceetol Ja: Now comes the tricky part; keeping our eyes on him and his eyes off of us. Stick close, but not too close!
System: Follow the bandit from a distance. The objective will end in failure if you are noticed, or if you fall too far behind.
System: Should you fail to complete the objective, you may try again by speaking to Ceetol Ja.

Cutscene

Ceetol Ja: Those are the merchants we met at Porta Praetoria!
Garrulous Trader: So they just let you go out of the kindness of their hearts, is that it? Not only that, but you came crawling straight back here, leading whoever they sent to track you right to our doorstep.
Skittish Bandit: I swear it, no one followed me! The soldiers took me as far as Ala Ghiri and then went back the way they came! I made sure they were specks in the distance before I even set foot outside of the town!
Garrulous Trader: I suppose I've no choice but to take you at your word, not that it's worth much. Well, now that this charade is at an end, let us change into something a little less drab.
Skittish Bandit: Um, Chalteaufite... Why did you make us fight that bloke/woman without the blessin'? (S)He could've killed the lot of us without breaking a sweat!
Chalteaufite: A mere oversight, that is all.
Chalteaufite: Though it pains me to admit it, even with the invulnerability granted by the artifact, the likes of us are ever at the mercy of the truly powerful.
Chalteaufite: I never expected that Mamool Ja wretch to hire a warrior of such caliber to retrieve the vessel. A pox on those interfering nincompoops!
Timid “Trader”: But the Mamool Ja girl didn't seem a bad sort. Naive, maybe, but it's plain that her heart's in the right place.
Chalteaufite: You truly are pathetic. Not only did you fail miserably, but now you're sympathizing with the enemy?
Chalteaufite: Give me one good reason why I shouldn't rid myself of you permanently!
Timid “Trader”: No, please! We owe everything to you, Chalteaufite! Without you, we are nothing!
Ceetol Ja: They were all in on this from the beginning, with Chalteaufite pulling the strings. If this is how he treats his friends, imagine what he'd do to his enemies!
Mamool Ja Mercenary: You couldn't stay away, could you?
Chalteaufite: What!? Imbecile! You led them right to us!
Chalteaufite: Kaqool Ja! Eliminate these vermin!
Ceetol Ja: Let me handle this, Forename!
Ceetol Ja: You're from Tural, working here as a mercenary, yes?
Ceetol Ja: The ones who hired you stole the Steelhog Vessel from my village! We need its blessing to stand a chance against the beasts of the forest!
Ceetol Ja: I can't return home without the vessel!
Kaqool Ja: Either you return home empty-handed, or you won't be returning at all. I'd rather not harm a fellow Turali, so get out of here before I change my mind.
Kaqool Ja: I've bought enough time by listening to your blathering. Don't let me catch you sniffing around our tails.
Ceetol Ja: Chalteaufite and his underlings are out of sight... I thought I could make that Kaqool Ja see sense, but he was clearly in no mood to listen. I'd say our best option is report to the Resistance members in Ala Ghiri and share what we've learned.

Optional Dialogue

Ceetol Ja: I went ahead and gave my account, though I expect he'd like to hear yours as well.

Speak with the Resistance fighter

Resistance Fighter: Regardless of how things turned out, we appreciate your cooperation in the investigation. The information you've provided has certainly given us a lot to consider.
Resistance Fighter: From what I hear, you almost came to blows with a Mamool Ja sellsword. Or sell-axe, I suppose.
Resistance Fighter: I'm glad that it didn't come to violence, especially given the power these bandits have at their disposal. Even so, we thank you for braving such a dangerous mission.
Ceetol Ja: No thanks are needed. We're just as much a part of this investigation as the Resistance!
Ceetol Ja: And I'm sure we can agree we'll need to work together to take down Chalteaufite and his gang. Their performance at Porta Praetoria showed just how cunning they are!
Resistance Fighter: It would seem so, yes. I'm told their little act was most convincing. I'll be sure to warn my comrades against any similar shenanigans. As for the two of you, be careful out there!

Speak with Ceetol Ja (cutscene)

Ceetol Ja: All things considered, I'd say that went fairly well.
Ceetol Ja: Chalteaufite used the same trick as the time he came to my village, namely, posing as a simple trader when he's in fact a dastardly thief!
Ceetol Ja: Still, not even the most skilled actor could fake the fear in his mens' eyes.
Ceetol Ja: It appears that Chalteaufite has complete control over them, and they are powerless to resist.
Ceetol Ja: The only one who doesn't seem afraid of him is Kaqool Ja. He even let us go when he had no obligation to do so. I think that if we had the chance to talk, we might find some common ground.
What will you say?
> Yes, I get that feeling, too.
> Sounds like wishful thinking to me.
< Yes, I get that feeling, too. >
Ceetol Ja: I knew you would! I've never been much of a fighter, but I make up for it in other ways. I'm a fairly good judge of character, for one!
< Sounds like wishful thinking to me. >
Ceetol Ja: Hmm... Perhaps you're right, but I'm not ready to give up just yet. While I'm certainly not the best fighter, I've been told I'm a good judge of character.
Ceetol Ja: For most of my life, I've lived in a remote village, deep in the forest. I had hardly any contact with the outside world, so the thought of talking to strangers was quite daunting at first.
Ceetol Ja: But over the course of my journey, I've traveled through all kinds of places. If there's one thing I've learned, it's this: wherever you go, people are people. In the end, our cultures and the places where we grew up don't make that big a difference.
Ceetol Ja: None of us are perfect, and we each have our faults. And even if it's harder to find in some than in others, I believe there is good in all of us.
Ceetol Ja: That's why I hope we have another chance to speak with the thieves...and Kaqool Ja.
Ceetol Ja: I'm certainly not strong enough to beat any sense into them, so I'll try talking some sense into them instead!
Ceetol Ja: Having said, well, all of that, I can't feel even a shred of goodness in that Chalteaufite. Maybe I'm not looking hard enough, or perhaps violence is the only language he understands. Things might get a little rough before he's willing to listen.
Ceetol Ja: Anyway, we can save him for last! I'll try thinking of a way to reach out to the other members of the gang. Give me a little time, would you?
