Journal

  • The Crystal Exarch is eager for you to meet with Alphinaud.
  • In order to facilitate your reunion with Alphinaud, the Exarch offers to arrange transportation for the journey to Kholusia. He hands you a folded letter, and asks that you present it to Szem Djenmai, the Master of Beasts at Temenos Rookery.
  • After perusing your letter of introduction, Szem Djenmai not only agrees to provide you with an amaro, but also insists upon accompanying you on the first leg of your trip. He bids you gather your gear and head to the Amaro Launch, where one of the younger tamers will attend to you while Szem is saddling the mounts.
  • Despite obvious doubts as to your skill as a rider, the young tamer nevertheless trusts in Master Djenmai's decision to grant you the use of his amaro. Your journey to Kholusia has begun.
  • After a blissfully uneventful flight, you alight upon the island. Szem waits patiently nearby as you find your land legs.
  • According to your guide, it is not the wildlife of Kholusia that should concern you, but its people. Once satisfied that you have heeded his warning regarding the Eulmorans, the Zun promises to tell you something that will aid you in your search for Alphinaud...

Dialogue

Accepting the Quest

Crystal Exarch: You will visit Alphinaud in Kholusia, then? Excellent.
Crystal Exarch: As I mentioned, your destination is an island off the west coast, so you will need a mount capable of making the journey.
Crystal Exarch: Here is a letter of introduction. Present it to Szem Djenmai, the Master of Beasts at Temenos Rookery, and he will take care of you. Crystal Exarch: When you see Alphinaud, be sure to pass on my warmest regards.
(Optional)
Crystal Exarch: Your first order of business will be to reunite with Alphinaud and Alisaie. In so doing, the predicament here in Norvrandt should become abundantly clear.
Crystal Exarch: As for communications with the Source, Feo Ul will gladly serve as your messenger. If needs be, however, you yourself should be capable of making the journey between worlds.
Crystal Exarch: The device there will serve as a portal─simply touching a hand to its surface will transport you to the location of the beacon I left at the base of the tower. In theory, at least...

Presenting the letter of introduction to Szem Djenmai at Temenos Rookery

Szem Djenmai: Your face is unknown to me. What business have you at my rookery?
<Hand Over Letter of Introduction>
Szem Djenmai: ...Hmph. Signed by the Exarch, no less.
Szem Djenmai: Yes, I can provide you with an amaro for passage to Kholusia. I will pick you out a friendly whelp.
< What will you say? >
< An "amaro," you say...? >
< Not a chocobo, then...? >
< An “amaro,” you say...? >
Szem Djenmai: That's right. Mounts like my grey friend over there are a common sight in these parts.
Szem Djenmai: But I gather you hail from further afield. More accustomed to chocobos, perchance? I hear there are a few places where they ride little else.
< Not a chocobo, then...? >
Szem Djenmai: A chocobo? Do you hail from one of Norvrandt's more isolated settlements, perchance? I hear there are a few places where they ride little else.
Szem Djenmai: But here in the Crystarium, mounts like that grey fellow there are far more commonly used.
(Both)
Szem Djenmai: ...Hm. Seeing as you are plainly unaccustomed to riding amaro, I think it best I accompany you on this flight myself.
Szem Djenmai: Any Zun worthy of the name could do it, of course, but the Exarch sent you to me. Ensuring you arrive safely is my responsibility.
Szem Djenmai: Gather your things and meet me at the Amaro Launch. One of the junior tamers will attend to you while I ready the mounts.
(Optional)
Szem Djenmai: Wait for me at the Amaro Launch. Just mention my name to the tamer on duty, and he will see you are taken care of

Speaking with the aspiring amaro tamer

Aspiring Amaro Tamer: You want to fly an amaro to Kholusia? Well, I suppose if Master Djenmai is going with you...
Aspiring Amaro Tamer: Wait here, please. The master should be along with the mounts shortly.

Cutscene

Ardbert (Voiceover): The whistling breeze, mute. The pounding surf, frozen. Time itself takes a breath...
Ardbert (Voiceover): At light's edge, all is perfectly still. The world captured in a painting, locked in a moment.
Ardbert (Voiceover): Music, faint and fleeting, drifts coastward on the lifeless air...
Ardbert (Voiceover): And in the distance, beyond the broken earth, a city beckons...

Speaking with Szem Djenmai (Cutscene)

Szem Djenmai: We are arrived. This is Cracked Shell Beach, on the eastern coast of Kholusia. You should be safe here for the present.
Szem Djenmai: Compared to the mainland, sin eater attacks are far less prevalent. And the native beasts are not any more dangerous than elsewhere.
Szem Djenmai: It is the people you should be wary of...
Szem Djenmai: Spy you that city in the distance? That is Eulmore, the island's main settlement.
Szem Djenmai: It rivals the Crystarium in scale, and was once an ally in our battle against the abominations.
Szem Djenmai: For years, the Eulmoran elite have fancied themselves the masters of what remains of our broken world. They have gone as far as to offer the leaders of other settlements their protection─if we bend the knee.
Szem Djenmai: But to say their ideals are questionable would be putting it mildly. The Crystarium is one among many who resist their heavy-handed authority, and while we are not at war, our relationship with Eulmore is strained at best.
Szem Djenmai: It may be wise to conceal your ties with the Exarch during your stay here, especially in the vicinity of the city.
Szem Djenmai: I am glad we understand each other.
Now, the Exarch has instructed me to divulge a secret that should make finding your friend a good deal easier. Listen closely...
