Players can form a party to tackle many group activities, including instanced duties such as Dungeons, Trials, and Raids, as well as open world activities like FATEs and Treasure Hunts. Players can use the Duty Finder to automatically form parties across the servers for almost all duties. Additionally, players can use the Party Finder to form parties with specific goals by filtering players with certain requirements.

A Light Party usually consists of 4 players while a Full Party consists of 8 players. An alliance consists of 3 full parties or 24 players.

__TOC__

Types of Parties
Light Party
A light party consists of 4-7 players, with 4 being the most common. A 4-player light party typically consists of 1 tank Tank / 1 healer Healer / 2 dps DPS. Nearly all Dungeons, Guildhests, and low level Trials are designed for a 4-player light party.

Light parties allow usage of up to level 2 limit breaks.
PvP
The current light party content is Crystalline Conflict, consisting of two teams of 5 players each.

Full Party
A full party consists of 8 players, typically 2 tank Tanks / 2 healer Healers / 4 dps DPS. Most raids along with nearly all level 50+ Trials are designed for a full party.

Full parties allow usage of up to level 3 limit breaks.

Historical
Prior to Patch 1.17, the maximum party size was 15 for a "Full Party," but there were no instanced duties at the time and very little reason to form a party at all. Behests allowed the 15-player full party.

Alliance
Alliances consist of 3 full parties of 24 players. The role mix is different for alliances: three separate Full Parties of 1 tank Tank / 2 healer Healers / 5 dps DPS. Alliance Raids are the primary content for this party type.

Chaotic Alliance Raids are instead designed for the regular full party composition of 2 tank Tank / 2 healer Healers / 4 dps DPS per party.

Some large-scale field operation raids allow for an alliance of 6 full parties, or 48 players total. This option can be seen in the Party Finder UI, but once inside the instance, the alliance UI will not be displayed.
PvP
Alliance role mixes are not enforced in PvP.
* Frontline is the primary alliance raid PvP content, consisting of three teams of 24 players (3 Full Parties per team).
* Rival Wings refers to its twelve (six for each team) Light Party-sized team units as "Alliances".
Party Members
The Party Members window may be found in the Party Menu. It is a tab of the Social window. It contains the following information:
* Current Online Status icon
* Player name
* Search Comment
* Class or Job
* Current location
* Free Company (left blank in duties)
* Languages available and the current client language the party member is using (indicated by an underline).

Opening the subcommand menu on a party member's name (right-clicking on a name using mouse/keyboard) will allow one to view their Adventurer Plate, view their Search Info, or to initiate a Vote Dismiss on them. Opening the subcommand menu on your name will allow you to edit your Search Info and set your Search Comment.

The active Party Bonus is indicated at the bottom of the window. This is a bonus to all Attributes varying from 1% to 5% according to the diversity of roles in the current party. For example, a party with a PLD, WHM, BLM, and PCT will gain a bonus of 3% - one for Tank, one for Healer, and one for Magical Ranged.

* Current Online Status icon
* Player name
* Search Comment
* Class or Job
* Current location

Tools
Core mechanics
The thaumaturge can cast fire and ice spells to inflict damage. In order to maintain MP cost at a bearable level they cycle between fire and ice.
* Fire - Fire
* Transpose - Transpose
* Manaward - Manaward

Thaumaturges have Astral Fire and Umbral Ice – specific effects attained upon using fire and ice spells, respectively. Each charge of Astral Fire increases MP cost for the next fire spell, while Umbral Ice increases MP regeneration. In order to maintain a low MP cost to use fire spells thaumaturges are required to use spells from the opposite element; using fire spells remove Umbral Ice stacks if there are any, or build Astral Fire if there's no effect active, using ice spells work the other way around. Transpose is a key ability to balance between both elements.
Lore
In days long past, there existed an occult and arcane art known as black magic—a potent magic of pure destructive force born forth by a sorceress of unparalleled power. Those who learned to wield this instrument of ruin came to be called black mages, out of both fear and respect for their gift. Yet great power served to corrupt the judgment of mortal man, and so he unknowingly set out upon the path of ruin.

History
In the lands of Yafaem at the peak of the Fifth Astral Era, the genius sorceress Shatotto wove the first spell of the art that became known as “black magic.” Over the course of her lifetime, the Mhachi mage’s obsessive research into destructive power gave rise to a host of devastating incantations and arcane weaponry.

This new school of magic found many willing students, and cadres of black mages soon formed the offensive core of Mhach’s forces in the War of the Magi. But the casting of so many mighty spells drained the land dry of aether, and both sides of the terrible conflict knew defeat when the tortured balance of elements sought to right itself with the great floods of the Sixth Umbral Calamity. It is small wonder, then, that practitioners of the arcane were mistrusted and reviled in the years following this realm-spanning catastrophe. Black magic itself was branded a forbidden art, its secrets consigned to the darkest depths of history.

In any age, however, there always exist those whose hunger for knowledge and power drive them to explore the most lightless abyss. Thus it was that scarcely a century ago, a thaumaturge by the name of Ququruka broke the seals of an ancient tome, and secretly donned the black robes of a long-forgotten cabal...

Equipment
Wizard's Attire
A raiment of the black mage. Resplendent after two thousand years, this garb from the Fifth Astral Era is shot through with hex-spun mythril. Such innovations give away this seemingly innocent piece of clothing as the invest for summoning creatures from the void—that otherworldly plane which makes sport of the sanity of man.
Stardust Rod
A sorcerous staff crafted in the Fifth Astral Era by Shatotto, thaumaturge of black repute. Fashioned from remnants of a star ripped from its course by destructive magic, her Stardust Rods enjoy the highest regard from the worst sort of people. Death’s Handmaiden was one of Shatotto’s epithets, and despite the ravages of age, her relics live up to their dark reputation.

Lunaris Rod
An intrepid adventurer supposedly retrieved this arcane weapon from the Yafaem Saltmoor at the behest of an avid collector of ancient occult paraphernalia. The staff is topped by a crescent moon carved from the horn of a voidsent, the full sorcerous potential of which is focused by the two gemstones into a locus of thrumming power. Though there are no artisan’s markings to identify its origin, the style of craftsmanship is unmistakably Mhachi, a civilization which thrived during the Fifth Astral Era.
Goetia Attire
Goetia attire was originally worn by high-ranking Mhachi magi who were particularly skilled in enslaving the denizens of the void. Though appearing featureless from a distance, closer inspection reveals subtle arcane patterns in the cloth—runes and symbols woven with thread soaked in the blood of pact-bound voidsent. These patterns are said to amplify the power of the wearer, elevating the destructive potential of the caster’s spells to truly catastrophic levels. Infused with such potent properties, the authenticity of the robes becomes glaringly apparent when compared to the many imitations merchants seek to hawk as genuine relics of ancient Mhach.

Tricks of the Trade
*Meteor: Gathering vast quantities of aether from her allies, the mage unleashes a gigantic mass of crystallized energy upon the heads of her foes. Those who witness the unmatched destruction of this potent magick liken it to a burning star falling from the heavens.
*Manawall: This arcane barrier is a manifestation of the mage’s unyielding will. All physical forces directed towards the caster with harmful intent are robbed of inertia by the Manawall, greatly reducing their impact.
*Flare: Shatotto, the matriarch of black magic, devised this spell in her relentless pursuit of ultimate destructive power. Combining one’s own mana with ambient aether, the caster triggers an explosion of monumental force.
*Ley Lines: The caster uses this technique to connect naturally occurring lines of energy and create a circle of power. While standing within this circle, the circulation of the mage’s aether is accelerated, allowing him to weave spells with heightened alacrity.

Ququruka Tataruka
*Race (Clan): Lalafell (Dunesfolk)
*Gender: Male
*Age: 132
*Epithet: Master Ququruka
In his youth, Ququruka was an accomplished thaumaturge who, in his insatiable thirst for arcane knowledge, turned his hand to the forbidden art of black magic. His research was painstakingly slow until he encountered three beastmen who shared his all-consuming obsession. Combining their efforts, they pieced together broken secrets and prepared a ritual by which black magic could be fully restored to the world. In his prideful arrogance, however, Ququruka altered the rite with his own incantations. His meddling disrupted their tenuous command over the chaotic aether, unleashing energies that tore his beastman friends apart and reformed them into a singular abomination.

Overcome by horror and remorse, Ququruka returned to Ul'dah, and convinced the authorities to confine him to the Marasaja Pit—the sultanate’s deepest of dungeons. There would he lose himself in meditation for a hundred years, until one worthy of donning the black appeared—a successor who could undo the dark deeds he had committed in the name of glory.

Lalai Darkeyes
*Race (Clan): Lalafell (Dunesfolk)
*Gender: Female
*Age: 24
*Epithet: Lalai Darkeyes
A priestess of the Order of Nald’thal. During a visit to the Marasaja Pit to hear the confession of a prisoner, Lalai was distracted by the presence of powerful magicks. Seeking to identify the source of this arcane disturbance, she ventured into the deepest reaches of the prison. There she encountered Ququruka Tataruka, a legendary mage who had spent the past century meditating in unbroken confinement. His vast knowledge of divine myth and ancient thaumaturgy ignited in her a burning curiosity—a ravenous flame that demanded to be fed. Thus it was that her frequent duties within the Pit masked her gradual initiation into the art of black magic at the foot of her imprisoned master.

Ambient Aether
Ambient aether suffuses the natural world—when this energy is leeched dry, the surrounding land is stripped of its capacity to bear forth life. For most arcane arts, a mage’s own reserves of mana suffice to fuel even the most powerful incantations, but certain formidable spells from the school of black magic drink deep of the world’s wells of life energy.

The Books of Nald'thal
These two occult volumes were scribed by the contemporary black mage, Quguruka Tataruka. Written in an obscure code and containing all the knowledge he had gleaned on the forbidden art, Ququruka is said to have set down these secrets of black magic in preparation for the arrival of a worthy successor.

Black Mage's Panoply
Seventh Hell Petasos
The brim's peculiar shape is, in fact, one of arcane merit, designed to draw in ambient aether. In addition to providing protection from voidsent gazes, the attached cloth eyepatch reduces peripheral distractions for enhanced focus while casting.

Seventh Hell Gloves
The seventh hell gloves are augmented by large sapphires, which increase casting speed by channeling condensed aether directly to the mage’s staff. The small gemstones in the rings sewn to each glove—on the left hand, ruby, on the right, emerald—also possess minor but useful magical properties.

Seventh Hell Coat
As with the petasos's brim, the sleeves and cuffs on this coat are specifically shaped to augment the wearer’s magick. The gemstones inserted in various adornments at the chest and waist aid in the manipulation of aether as it flows throughout the body.

Form & Function
A black mage’s attire is best conceived of as a full-body arcane arsenal, and each piece a tool to help her wreak destruction. The intricate patterns on the back of her robe augment any number of magicks, while the mystical adornments on the front, far from being mere baubles, draw in aether from the surrounding environment that she may bend it to her will.
The large-brimmed hat so often associated with black mages is, in fact, a relic of Mhach, meant to shield one’s vision from the accursed gaze of which many voidsent are possessed. Indeed, the danger of coming under hysteria-inducing attack was so great that some mages' hats were equipped with additional cloth to be used in blindfolding one eye entirely. It is important to note, however, that the need for such protection only came about with the advent of voidmagicks—it is unlikely that the sorceress Shatotto or other early black mages would have worn anything similar.

The Elemental Gauge indicates whether you are under the influence of Astral Fire (after casting a Fire spell) or Umbral Ice (after casting a Blizzard spell). While under the influence of Astral Fire, all Fire spells will have increased potency, but require more MP to cast. While under the influence of Umbral Ice, all Blizzard spells will have no cost, and will recover MP upon striking a target. Furthermore, when maintaining stacks of Astral Fire or Umbral Ice, a spell of the opposite element can be cast at no cost but will deal reduced damage.

{|
|
|Coming under the influence of Astral Fire or Umbral Ice will grant Enochian, and set the lower-right corner of the gauge aglow, indicating its effect is active. Enochian increases the potency of magic attacks, as well as unlocks powerful spells such as Blizzard IV. Enochian fades when Astral Fire or Umbral Ice expires.

{|
|Casting Freeze or Blizzard IV grants 3 Umbral Hearts which are represented by the arrows in the gauge's lower-left corner. An Umbral Heart is consumed each time a Fire spell is cast, nullifying the MP cost increase applied by the Astral Fire status.
When the crystal at the bottom of the Elemental Gauge glows pink, you will be under effect of Polyglot, which allows the spells Foul and Xenoglossy (acquired at level 80) to be cast, consuming a crystal.
