Supplicant Sheep: Baa! Baa, baa! Baaaaaa!
Supplicant Sheep: <rustle> Baaaaaa!

System: Having emphatically imparted its message, the sheep dashes off. You can only hope that this letter contains some manner of sheep-to-Vrandtic dictionary.
System: The script is comprised of several distinct hands, and a sweet, flowery fragrance lifts from the page. Your thoughts wander naturally to the pixies of Il Mheg.

LETTER04715@Flowery Letter: Greetings, sapling of the king! If you are reading this, it means our precious fluffy has proven itself most admirably as a messenger sheep.
LETTER04715@Flowery Letter: We write you with some fascinating news—a talking leafman has appeared in Il Mheg!
LETTER04715@Flowery Letter: You remember our leafmen, don't you? Those dreary mortals we furbished into darling shrubbery? Well, they're not usually much for conversation on account of being topiary bushes, but this one simply jabbers on!
LETTER04715@Flowery Letter: Such an accomplished leafman must pique your interest, yes? Come and find us in Lydha Lran and we shall introduce you!

Anden: Erm! Excuse me, madam. Might I have a word? ...If you can understand me, that is.
Anden: You can! Oh, what a relief. Please, help me! My mind is in a terrible haze at present, and these flittering, chittering children have done nothing but cackle and poke at me.

Eo Tyr@Delighted Pixie: You came! I knew you would. The king's sapling would never pass up a wonder this delightful!
Eo Tyr: I am Eo Tyr, and this is Lor Ul and Aenc Ose. We wrote you that letter together!

Anden: Sapling...?
Anden: W-Wait, are you a plant!? I thought you were a person come to help me. Oooh, please tell me you aren't some tree who simply looks like a person!

Question: What will you say?

> Don't worry—I'm a sapling to some, but definitely a person.
Anden: Is that supposed to make sense!?
> I am Feo Ul's stalwart sapling!
Anden: S-So you're not a person after all? How— What— Oooh, I feel faint...
> Sapling, seedling, heavenspillar...tree metaphors seem to follow me.
Anden: Speak plainly, I beg of you—are you or aren't you made of wood!?
---

Eo Tyr: Tee hee hee! Why, you sound so distraught—as though you aren't the greenest and leafiest one here!
Eo Tyr: What marvelous fun this is. In exchange for making me laugh, I'll share with you both a little secret.
Eo Tyr: This chatty little bushling sprouted from none other than Anden, one of the leafmen inside these stables.
Eo Tyr: As for why...who knows? Maybe Anden's spirit is simply overflowing with life, or maybe all my pruning and wishing finally paid off. Or both!
Eo Tyr: Regardless, the two are connected by their roots, which means they are both undeniably Anden!

Anden: So, my name is Anden... Is it!? My memories are so muddled, I can't tell if it feels familiar or not...

Lor Ul: Oho! Why don't we muddle Anden back into his original form, then? That sounds like wonderful fun.

Aenc Ose: Oh, how lovely. Let's change him back!

Eo Tyr: No! Absolutely not!
Eo Tyr: Everyone knows that trying to change a leafman back only ends in a mucky mudman. Anden won't be another attempt gone wrong—I won't allow it!

Anden: Y-You mean to say that my choice is between remaining a bush or becoming...mud? That I shall never again assume personage!? Oooh, say it isn't so... Please!

Question: What will you say?

> Feo Ul, I need you.
> Help me, Feo Ul. You're this talking bush's only hope...
> King of the fae, hear my cry!
---

Feo Ul: Yes, yes! That's it, my precious sapling! You should have called upon me immediately, of course—but how could I be anything but delighted that you remembered me all on your own?
Feo Ul: Whatever your desire, your beautiful branch is at your service!

Eo Tyr: Y-Your Majesty!

Feo Ul: 'Tis true—none have yet returned a leafman to its original form. But let such improbabilities become mere trifles if such is my sapling's wish! In fact, it could be accomplished by none other.
Feo Ul: You and your friends possess the ability to heal those tainted by Light's corruption, do you not? Were that knowledge to be coupled with my strength as king, this leafman may yet return to his erstwhile self.
Feo Ul: However, such deeply transformative magicks are a far cry from simple pixie glamours. If you cannot hold the clearest image of your true form within your mind's eye, your fate as a mudman is all but sealed.
Feo Ul: You know what must be done, my darling sapling. Call for me again once your preparations are complete!
Feo Ul: I mustn't let Anden become a sloppy, slabby mudman! How can I help?

Anden: Well, I take great comfort in knowing that I am not condemned to an eternity of muck or twigs, but recalling my true form feels like a daunting task indeed...
Anden: ...Speaking of true forms, what was the consensus on yours, then? Person? Tree? Honestly, I'm more confused than ever after that last conversation.
Anden: Oooh, a nickname! That makes far more sense—you do look quite like a person. And you say your name is “[Forename]”? A pleasure to meet you.
Anden: Now, [Forename], I don't mean to impose, but seeing as I am shackled here by roots and surrounded by plant-harassing mischief-makers, you may be my only living ally in this world. Please, please help me remember who I truly am!
Anden: Oh, thank you! I will do my utmost to remember promptly.
Anden: Of course, simply trying to remember something you so utterly can't seems like a rather fruitless endeavor. There must be some reliable way of stirring up latent memories...
Anden: If I had hands, I'd give myself a smart rap on the head to get the blood flowing. ...Or sap flowing, as it were.
Anden: But you have hands, [Forename]! Would you be so kind as to give me a good, solid smack in what might be my cranial region? Just to get the leafy matter engaged.
Anden: ...W-Wait! I just got a better look at your biceps, so perhaps not. <shudder>

Eo Tyr: Anden, Anden, you mustn't beat upon the bush! I know I got a little carried away tugging at your leaves and all, but I'm ready to help, now—and I know you better than anyone!
Eo Tyr: I've even seen your true form before! But simply telling you what I know isn't going to help you truly remember who you were, and you must truly, truly remember your true form if you are truly to return safely!

Anden: True... I must say, that is surprisingly thoughtful for someone who was tee-hee-ing at my distress not moments ago. But if you can't tell me anything, how do you intend to help?

Eo Tyr: Well, I never said I couldn't tell you anything—just nothing too important to be told!
Eo Tyr: I'll give you little hints and pieces, instead. Like this—do you remember being a shepherd, Anden? You so loved your fluffy white sheep.
Eo Tyr: You loved them so much, in fact, that even those scary sin eaters couldn't drive you away from your flock. You stayed and cared for them until the very end.

Anden: Really!? I confess, I don't remember anything of the sort...
Anden: ...But if you speak the truth, perhaps seeing tools or materials a shepherd might use would induce further recollection!
Anden: Not much of a lead, but it's all we have at the moment. [Forename], would you be kind enough to procure me some items fit for a shepherd?

Eo Tyr: We'll help too! Lor Ul and Aenc Ose love playing shop, so be sure to check their wares for both handy and dandy bits, bobs, and supplies.
Eo Tyr: Lately, Lor Ul has been fascinated with what you mortals call “scrips,” but sweet Aenc Ose will be happy to take your shiny coin just the same. Oh, what fun we shall have! I can hardly wait to get started.
Optional dialogue
> Interact with the adventurous abystoma.
The ambystoma stares at you unflinchingly, as if regarding something novel.
Regarding it in turn, you notice that it appears to be floating, if ever so slightly.

Accepting the quest
Hermes: Well, we mustn't keep the others waiting. Let us return to Anagnorisis.

Optional dialogue
> Interact with the adventurous abystoma.
Perhaps it's only your imagination, but something in the creature's demeanor bespeaks proud defiance for having gone on an adventure.

Meteion: Some creations stay outside. Others stay at Ktisis. Like the ambystomas!

Emet-Selch: No more errant creations to distract us from matters of actual import, I trust.

Hythlodaeus: 'Twas blissfully uneventful in your absence. The little ones were on their best behavior.

Hermes: My apologies for the trouble. Owing to your kind assistance, all the ambystomas are safe and well.
Hermes: I will presently send them back to their space, if you would go on ahead to the main building.
Hermes: Upon entering, you will see a table and chairs ─ a meeting area. We may speak there.
Emet-Selch: Very well. Take care not to let the creatures slip away again.

Optional dialogue
Hermes: Will you be attending as well? If so, you should join the others at the building.

Hythlodaeus: While Emet-Selch has been accommodating thus far, he is the one who has business with Hermes. If you wish to attend, you will have to ask his permission.

Speak with Emet-Selch. (Cutscene)
| Voiced cutscene |
Emet-Selch: This appears to be the place.
Emet-Selch: And here is where we part ways.
Emet-Selch: We will be discussing highly sensitive affairs. Only a select few may be privy to such knowledge, and that does not include someone who cannot or will not divulge their origins.
Emet-Selch: What? Will I have to remove you by force?

What will you say?
> I have important things to say to him as well.
Emet-Selch: Yes, I'm sure your business with Hermes is quite pressing. You may speak with him to your heart's content ─ after ours is concluded.
> There are reasons I cannot speak freely.
Emet-Selch: Let's hear them, then. These reasons of yours. Who knows─if I deem your mysterious cause worthy, I may even be inclined to offer my assistance.

Hermes: I do not object to his/her attendance.
Emet-Selch: Hermes... This is highly irregular.
Hermes: Perhaps, but I believe he/she can be trusted. Meteion would not have taken to him/her so quickly otherwise.
Hermes: Moreover...the presence of a third party may help me to maintain composure.
Emet-Selch: As you wish, then.
Emet-Selch: Behave yourself, do you hear?

Hermes: So, it's finally happened, then.
Emet-Selch: Aye. Fandaniel has declared his intention to step down, and named you as his preferred successor.
Emet-Selch: In recognition of your knowledge and your works, the Convocation is giving the recommendation due consideration.
Emet-Selch: As one who does not know you personally, I am to use my impartial eye to take your measure.
Emet-Selch: And above all else, to ascertain your disposition towards the invitation.
Emet-Selch: I understand that you and Fandaniel are close. He himself was once chief overseer of Elpis, after all.
Emet-Selch: I should not be surprised if you knew before anyone else that he wished to relinquish his office.
Hermes: I did... He told me that, when he fulfilled his purpose, he wished to pass the torch to me.
Emet-Selch: A torch you seem none too pleased to accept. Are you so averse to serving on the Convocation?
Hermes: No, it's not that...
Hermes: For a humble researcher like myself to even be considered...is an honor beyond words.
Hermes: No, what troubles me ─ what I struggle to come to terms with ─ is the very fact that Fandaniel is stepping down.
Hermes: Does this not mean that he will return to the star?
Emet-Selch: Of his own volition, yes. Like so many others have before him.
Meteion: Return to the star? Does that mean...die?
Hythlodaeus: Well now, that's not a word I hear often... Is that what you say here in Elpis?
Hythlodaeus: Mankind is the life of Etheirys. Each of us a drop of blood flowing through its veins, bearing sustenance.
Hythlodaeus: In our finite time upon it, 'tis our duty to make it a better place, that all who call it home now and in future may abide in happiness.
Hythlodaeus: To that end, we have dedicated ourselves to the pursuit of enlightened creation. And by our efforts did we transform this once-untamed wilderness into the peaceful paradise you enjoy today.
Hythlodaeus: To return to the star whence we came is a privilege afforded to we who have so loved and nurtured it.
Hythlodaeus: A choice embraced by those who have lived their lives to the fullest, in service to our world.
Hythlodaeus: And when they depart upon this journey, it is beautiful. Always.
Emet-Selch: The Fourteen are no exception. 'Tis believed no occasion is more felicitous than the fulfillment of one's duty.
Emet-Selch: Our office becomes our lives, and to retire is to return. Or so the majority of us hold. Some few have elected to eschew custom.
Emet-Selch: Mayhap you feel Fandaniel's deeds do not warrant his return.
Emet-Selch: Yet you should know his accomplishments as well as any. During his time, he conceived of countless outstanding concepts.
Emet-Selch: And channeling the wealth of experience he attained here in Elpis, he brought forth many new specimens.
Hermes: I know of all this, I do...
Hermes: It's just...I cannot fathom why someone so great and wise, who could still do so much good, would want to end it all...
Hermes: Oh no, I've made her upset...
Hermes: Forgive me ─ I know I requested your presence. Might I trouble you to take Meteion outside? A change of scenery would do her good.

Optional dialogue
Hythlodaeus: Don't mind us, my friend. Please tend to Meteion.

Emet-Selch: Most would jump at the chance to serve in the Convocation. And yet...

Hermes: Forgive me. I will make it up to you, I promise.

Speak with Meteion.
Meteion: I'm sorry, [Forename]... I didn't want─ Didn't mean─ <sigh>
Meteion: ...A walk. Perhaps we can go for a walk?

Speak with Meteion and have her accompany you.
Meteion: Hermes gets sad. When he thinks about death.
Meteion: When others are sad, I'm sad too. That's how I am. How he made me.
Meteion: But don't worry. I'm fine now.
Meteion: So...why did you come here?
Meteion: You want to learn about Elpis and Hermes? Ooh, ooh, teach you! I can teach you!
Meteion: We could take turns! I tell you something...then you tell me something!

What will you say?
> Sounds like fun!
Meteion: It will be! It will be!
> Sure, why not.
Meteion: Then it's settled!
> Sounds like a bother...
Meteion: Awww... I won't be a bother. So please, [Forename]. Please!
Meteion: Hehe, you won't regret it! I'll teach you lots and lots of things!

Meteion: Um, where to start... Ah, yes! Let's talk to Memnon. He should be near the aetheryte.
Meteion: I'm not good at explaining, but Memnon is. So I'll have him explain instead.

Optional dialogue
Meteion: Let's go and talk to Memnon. He should be near the aetheryte.

Conversation Point: In front of Anagnorisis aetheryte (X:24.7, Y:23.7)
> Discuss the aetheryte
Meteion: Ah, the aetheryte. Anyone can use it to teleport anywhere!
Meteion: Well, maybe not anywhere. Not to the ground or other isles.
Meteion: For that, you need teleporters. Oh, and permission!

Speak with Memnon while accompanied by Meteion.
Memnon: And what have we here...?

If player character is Miqo'te:
Memnon: Though you look like a person, you have the ears and tail of a beast... I assume you are a familiar like Meteion. Is there something you need?
If player character is Hrothgar:
Memnon: Though you look like a person, you have the features of a beast... I assume you are a familiar like Meteion. Is there something you need?
If player character is Au Ra:
Memnon: Though you look like a person, you have the horns and scales of a beast... I assume you are a familiar like Meteion. Is there something you need?
If player character is Lalafell:
Memnon: Though you look like a person, you could as easily pass for a toy... I assume you are a familiar like Meteion. Is there something you need?
If player character is Roegadyn:
Memnon: Though you look like a person, you have a remarkably large and robust physique... I assume you are a familiar like Meteion. Is there something you need?
If player character us Hyur:
Memnon: Though you look like a person, your aether is quite thin... I assume you are a familiar like Meteion. Is there something you need?
Meteion: This is [Forename]. Could you teach him/her about Elpis?
Memnon: Ah, a newly arrived familiar, is he/she? Very well, I should be glad to introduce our fair facility to him/her.
Memnon: As you know, it is mankind's duty to make the star a better place. As part of this duty, we employ creation magicks to bring forth new life.
Memnon: However, we cannot simply release our works into the world, for it would lead to chaos.
Memnon: No, any and all life-forms must undergo extensive testing to determine their fitness to exist. Testing which is conducted here in Elpis.
Memnon: Every candidate is subjected to rigorous study, in which we identify their properties, surmise what habitats might be suitable, and speculate as to the effects they may have on the environment and other species.
Memnon: Should it be judged a beneficial addition to the star, it will be allowed to take its place in the world.
Memnon: The two of you, too, were created with the hope of making the star a better place. So heed your masters well and be good, do you hear?
Meteion: We will, Memnon, we will. Thanks for the lesson!
Meteion: You had a turn. Now I get a turn!
Meteion: Where did you come from?

What will you say?
> From a place far, far away.
Meteion: Hmmm, then I probably don't know it. I don't know much about other places.
> From a place facing a great threat.
Meteion: Th-There's such a place? I had no idea...
> From the Crystarium... I guess?
Meteion: Crys...tarium? I've never heard of it.

Meteion: But this place is important to you. I can feel it.
Meteion: Oh, my power! I haven't told you about it.
Meteion: A creation. Let's find a creation. One not being watched. Then I'll explain my power!

Optional dialogue
Meteion: Let's find a creation. One not being watched. Then I'll explain my power!

Memnon: The desire to learn is a good thing. I wish you well in your endeavors, my dear familiar.

Conversation Point: In front of Eukleides (X:25.1, Y:25.2)
> Discuss the spriggans.
Meteion: ...Spriggans? What are spriggans?
Meteion: Oh no, we call them oreiai. If there's many. If it's just one, we say oreias!
Meteion: Though they're cute, they can be naughty.
Meteion: Sometimes, they run off with concept crystals. And Hermes has to run after them!

Eukleides: There is never a dull moment with the oreiai. Their fondness of minerals makes them highly unique, and I daresay they will be no less popular!

Search for idle creations while accompanied by Meteion.
Meteion: Oh! This creation is perfect!
Meteion: But...I don't remember seeing it before. Perhaps it's new?
Meteion: Anyway, I'll try reading its mind. That's my power!

Meteion: Hmmm... I can't read it. Or maybe...there's nothing to read?
Meteion: Wait... Please, wait... I'll try again. With you this time...
Meteion: Greetings! Can you hear me?
Meteion: This is my power. I can read the emotions of those around me, and project my emotions to others in return.
Meteion: I am not actually speaking to you in your mind. Rather, you are converting my emotions into words and intention ─ a process performed subconsciously by intelligent life-forms.
Meteion: This ability is vital to my mission, for it allows me to interact with intelligent beings even should they communicate via unknown languages or other nonverbal means.
Meteion: As a consequence, I am clumsy at speaking...
Meteion: Yet though I struggle to express myself in this fashion, Hermes wants me to speak as much as possible, for everyone has thoughts and feelings that they may wish to hide...
Meteion: I harbor an affection for you. One that is difficult to define.
Meteion: Aside from the fact that you share common traits with us, your thoughts are complex. Prismatic. They draw me in, and leave me wanting to know more.
Meteion: Out of respect for your privacy, I will refrain from using my power when speaking with you. Nevertheless, I want you to know that I wish to be your friend.
Meteion: Did you...hear me?
Meteion: Heh heh, good! Now it's my turn again! So...what are you good at?

What will you say?
> Fighting.
Meteion: Ooh, fighting! That must mean you're strong!
Meteion: Hermes is strong too. But he doesn't like to fight. Even when creations fight him.
> Crafting.
Meteion: Oh, not creating...but crafting? Putting things together with your hands...
Meteion: That sounds like fun! I can't use creation magicks. But maybe I can learn to craft!
> Gathering.
Meteion: Ooh, gathering! I like gathering too!
Meteion: What do you gather? Where do you go? How do you get there? Do you fly too!?
> Playing.
Meteion: Playing? I'm still not sure what that means...
Meteion: Hermes says, “Let's play.” But then he goes for a walk. Or looks at creations. It's fun, but no different from work.
> It's a secret!
Meteion: Ooh, a secret! That's something you want to hide! Just leave it to me...
Meteion: There! I've blocked it out. I can't block everything—not strong feelings. But that wasn't too strong.

Meteion: I-I think we might be bothering it...
Meteion: Let's keep going. We'll go and see Euanthe next. She's usually in a small building. One on the west row.

Optional dialogue
Motionless Bird: ...

Speak with Euanthe while accompanied by Meteion.
Euanthe: Well, well, if it isn't Meteion. I see you've brought a friend today.
Meteion: Greetings, Euanthe! Um, an apple. Could you make me an apple?
Meteion: The kind Hermes likes. Covered in syrup. I want to share it with [Forename]!
Euanthe: Oh, candied apple? Hermes is certainly partial to them, but you know you can't eat, Meteion. You weren't made to do so.
Meteion: B-But I like it too...
Euanthe: It may seem that way, but it's due to your ability to share others' feelings. You've taken Hermes's likes for your own.
Euanthe: In any case, I can't prepare an apple right now, but I'll bring one for Hermes soon. I promise.
Meteion: I'm sorry, [Forename]... I wanted to show you my favorite thing. Then I could ask about yours. But I failed...

What will you say?
> Tell her what you like.
Meteion: Ooh, that's what you like? Yes... Yes, I can feel it! Your joy and happiness!
Meteion: And it makes me happy too! Thanks for sharing it with me, [Forename]!
> Say nothing.

Meteion: Well, we've walked and talked a lot. Maybe Hermes has finished talking too. Shall we go and see?

Optional dialogue

Euanthe: Between you and me, Hermes's eating habits are atrocious. We may not be reliant upon food to the extent that our smaller creations are, but our diets eventually catch up with us.
Euanthe: If we don't consume the requisite balance of nutrients, we grow weak and lethargic. Yet Hermes consumes candied apples as if they were a staple...

Meteion: I hope Hermes isn't sad anymore...

Hythlodaeus: Ah, excellent timing. 'Twas a refreshing constitutional, I hope?

Emet-Selch: What, back already? Pity. A bit longer and we might have snuck away without you...

Speak with Hermes while accompanied by Meteion. (Cutscene)
Hermes: There you are. I can see the fresh air has done Meteion good.
Meteion: [Forename] wanted to learn about you and Elpis. So I taught him/her!
Meteion: About this place. About my power. About your favorite food!
Hermes: I'm not sure if that last one will be of any use...
Hermes: But I do appreciate your keeping Meteion company. While you were away, I finished speaking with our guests.
Emet-Selch: Finished? Hardly. You requested time to consider the invitation, so we have no choice but to occupy ourselves with an inspection of your work.
Hermes: My apologies...
Hermes: It has been decided that Emet-Selch and Hythlodaeus will accompany me as I tend to my duties.
Hermes: If you wish to learn more, perhaps you would like to come too?
Emet-Selch: I'm compelled to remind you that he/she is in no way associated with the Convocation. We simply chanced to meet at Propylaion.
Emet-Selch: There is no guarantee that the matters we discuss will remain private.
Hermes: I do not mind. To see the joy his/her presence brings Meteion, I cannot imagine our mysterious friend harbors malicious intent.
Meteion: [Forename] is kind. Really, truly! He/she taught me as much as I taught him/her!
Meteion: You're coming, of course? To watch Hermes? You're bound to learn lots and lots!
Steps
*Confront Nidhogg in the Final Steps of Faith.

*Speak with Alphinaud.

Journal
*You and your companions settle upon the backs of Hraesvelgr and his kin, and dive through the clouds in the direction of Ishgard. Soon after, you alight, hands numb and eyes stinging, on the Steps of Faith in the midst of battle. With a mixture of surprise and scorn, Nidhogg welcomes Hraesvelgr, who attempts in vain to persuade his brother from his vengeful course. A mighty clash then ensues between the pair, from which there can be only one victor... The city's defenders watch transfixed as Hraesvelgr tumbles onto the bridge, beaten and bloody, Ishgard's fate seemingly sealed. Triumphant, Nidhogg revels in the moment, only to learn that his fallen sibling has entrusted you with a gift: one half of his power.

*With Hraesvelgr's might now commingled with your own, you are become Ishgard's best and last hope of staying the rampaging Nidhogg. Slay the great wyrm's shade, and bring an end to a thousand years of fire and blood!
※The Final Steps of Faith can be accessed via the Duty Finder.

*You have succeeded in subduing Nidhogg's shade. Wrest the wyrm's eyes from Estinien's armor, and rid your companion of Nidhogg's virulent spirit.

*Following Alphinaud's lead, you join in the struggle to tear Nidhogg's eyes from Estinien's mail. Using every onze of your strength, you wrestle with the hateful things, arcs of crackling aether enveloping you in agony, but just when the feat appears beyond you, you appear to receive aid from a most unexpected source...
With one final heave, you succeed in separating man and wyrm, and for an instant you glimpse Nidhogg's disembodied spirit, before casting his eyes into the abyss. At long last, it is over. Having done all you can for Estinien, you watch as Ser Aymeric bears him back to Ishgard. Join Alphinaud at the Arc of the Worthy, and discuss the aftermath of the battle.

*Upon returning to Ishgard, Alphinaud praises you for your victory over Nidhogg's shade. Whatever joy he feels at the dread wyrm's defeat, however, is overshadowed by his concern for the battered Estinien...
Accepting the quest
Aymeric: Ishgard will not last long against Nidhogg and his Horde. We must away!

-voiced cutscene start
Hraesvelgr: Know you, then, what this roar portendeth?

Aymeric: Aye. I must return to my city without delay.

Hraesvelgr: Then we shall lend you our wings. Let us meet with Nidhogg on the field of battle, and together bring an end to his wrathful song.

[Vidofnir and Vedrfolnir arrive.]
[The scene shifts to the Ishgardians fighting Nidhogg's brood on the Steps of Faith.]

Lucia: Remember your training! We hold fast until the lord commander returns! Ugh.... We must hold...

Artoirel: Reinforcements! By the Fury... That one is the size of Nidhogg!
Lucia: Lord Commander!

Artoirel: You are late, Warrior of Light!

Nidhogg: Wherefore standest thou with these vermin, Brother?

Hraesvelgr: Abandon this war, shade.
Hraesvelgr: The suffering thou sowest serveth no end. The traitor's progeny have learned of their forefather's betrayal, and now seek to make amends with our kind.
Hraesvelgr: Never shall our grief be assauged nor our loss forgotten, but reconciliation may yet halt the spread of this plague of enmity. Forsake thy vengeance and be at peace.

Nidhogg: What soft-headed ramblings are these? Thy dalliance with that vile maid hath robbed thee of thy wits! Mayhap her cloying perfume hath made thee forget the stench of our brood-sister's lifeblood!

Hraesvelgr: Thou darest speak thus of my beloved!?

Nidhogg: Ah! Sot he flames of rage may yet be kindled! I feared thy heart's fire had long since gone out. But waste not the fury on words, Brother—thou shalt have need of it for the battle!

[Nidhogg and Hraesvelgr clash. Nidhogg defeats Hraesvelgr and tears off one of his wings.]

Hraesvelgr: Guh!

Nidhogg: Thou art weak, Hraesvelgr—a slitering wyrm who fawneth on the vermin who should rightly be his prey. For a thousand years I have fought without cease—and thou didst think to prevail against me!

Hraesvelgr: Glory not in thy victory, shade. The battle...is not yet won. My power—and my hope—have I entrusted to another...
Nidhogg: Thine eye! What hast thou done!?

[Hraesvelgr entrusts the player with one of his eyes.]

Nidhogg: Fool! Thou wouldst trust a mortal with thy strength!?
Nidhogg: I know thee... 'Twas thou who didst intrude upon my lair and best the half of me. But now I am whole, and naught in creation shall deny me my vengeance!

Gibrillont: ...They've come, have they? Well, don't you worry about me and mine. I can still wield a blade if the battle spills into the city.

Vidofnir: I will not distract thee from thy deadly task with idle parley. Go with courage, warrior of warriors.

Eudestand: Let them dragons come! We've been trainin' for this!

Symme: Sh-Shaking? N-Not me! S-Solid as a rock, I am!

Maelie: Is it true? Is Nidhogg attackin' our home again!?

House Fortemps Steward: May the Fury watch over you...

House Fortemps Manservant: Should the battle encroach upon the Pillars, I am prepared to take spear in hand and stand alongside our soldiers in defense of the manor!
-optional end

Confronting Nidhogg in the Final Steps of Faith
Nidhogg: Wriggling maggots! I shall grind you to paste in my jaws!
Nidhogg: Come, my children!
Claim the vengeance that is rightfully yours!
Nidhogg: Look upon the fool who dared embrace my power!
Witness the darkened wings that beat about his shriveled soul!
Nidhogg: Champions of man! Hearken to my fury!
Nidhogg: Thy final verse is sung!
Nidhogg: Thou hast survived my song...
Curse thee and thine eye, Hraesvelgr!
Nidhogg: Brood-brother, thou hast doomed me...
But if I must meet mine end, then all shall burn upon my pyre!
Nidhogg: Slain twice by mortal hands...

Post-duty cutscene
-voiced cutscene start
Alphinaud: Estinien!

Nidhogg: Is this...to be...mine end?
Nidhogg: Nay... I will not allow it... I am of the first brood...I am vengeance incarnate... I am Nidhogg!
Nidhogg: Thou shalt die by my hand!

Estinien: This is not your hand, wyrm!

Nidhogg: Thou...wilt...obey!

Estinien: I would ask one last favor of you, Warrior of Light... Finish me—now, while I have the beast subdued!
[The player and Alphinaud attempt to pull out Nidhogg's eyes from Estinien's armor.]
Estinien: You waste your time. Kill me! It is the only way! Ending Nidhogg...will be my final duty...

Alphinaud: No! You can't die like this! I won't let you!
[The spirits of Haurchefant and Ysayle assist and the eyes are removed. Nidhogg's ghost ascends to the heavens.]
Nidhogg: Undone by mortal will. Whither now...?

Aymeric: The eyes! Cast them into the abyss!

[The player and Alphinaud throw the eyes off the bridge.]
-cutscene end
-voiced cutscene start
Aymeric: He lives. ah, Estinien, my ill-fated friend.
Aymeric: Lucia! summon the healers! I want them ready to receive him!

Lucia: At once, Lord Commander!

Aymeric: Allow me to do this at least...

Hraesvelgr: The Horde have sensed the fall of their master, and scattered to the winds.

Aymeric: You have my gratitude, Hraesvelgr. Your deeds this day have saved a great many lives.

Hraesvelgr: Then our alliance hath served its purpose.
Hraesvelgr: Thou didst wield the power I granted thee well. 'Twas thine own skill and not mine eye which earned thee victory.
Hraesvelgr: I wish thy companion a swift recovery. Fare you well, children of man.

Alphinaud: The battle is won. We can do no more for Estinien now than bear him home and wish him well, even as Hraesvelgr did. The rest we must trust to the hands of the healers and the grace of the gods.
-cutscene end

-optional start
Beltardois: I bid you welcome, slayer of Nidhogg! Ever do the gates of Ishgard stand open to our savior!

Handeloup: Though our principal foe lies defeated, we shall continue to keep order inside the walls and protect the citizenry. In that much at least, the duties of the Temple Knights remain unchanged.

Quomonrentin: The Horde is routed, aye, but I will not count this war over until each blackened stone has been replaced.

Gondelimbaud: 'Tis you! The champion who slew Nidhogg! Your deeds shall pass into legend, yet I am honored to speak with you thus in the flesh!
Speaking with Alphinaud
Alphinaud: Through the haze of pain, I swear I sensed—But no. The past is done, and we must look to the future. At long last, Nidhogg is gone, his foul spirit cast out once and for all. I only pray that Estinien survives the ordeal...
*Alphinaud is eager to follow Raubahn back to Ul'dah, and witness the beginning of a new chapter in Ul'dahn history. Make your way to the Royal Promenade and present yourself to Bartholomew.
*With Nanamo's recovery, the chaos engulfing the city should finally give way to calm. Unfortunately, Lord Lolorito has worrying news to share. It would seem the Empire has built a warship to rival the might of the legendary Agrius. Hot on the heels of this shocking revelation, Alphinaud reveals his intent to disband the Crystal Braves. Inquire as to the thinking behind this momentous resolution.

*Alphinaud seems at once embarrassed and unburdened by his outpouring of emotion. What shall become of the Crystal Braves now that their commander is set upon the company's dissolution...?

Dialogue
Accepting the Quest
Alphinaud: Shall we also make our way to Ul'dah? I should imagine Bartholomew has been instructed to admit us.

Optional Dialogue
Yugiri: I hope Lord Lolorito's potion is as effective as he claims...

Alphinaud: It would appear that the Syndicate has moved swiftly to clear our names. Bartholomew, for one, does not seem remotely surprised by our presence here.

Speaking with Bartholomew on the Royal Promenade (Cutscene)
Bartholomew: Flame General Raubahn mentioned you might be coming. Please, this way if you will.

Cutscene Start
Nanamo Ul Namo: Ugh...
Nanamo Ul Namo: I was having the longest dream...

Raubahn: 'Tis time to wake up, Your Grace. Another day begins in Thanalan, and the sun blazes bright upon the sands.

Raubahn: Her Grace is awoken. The palace physician assures me she is none the worse for her slumber.
Raubahn: I believe Her Grace will soon resume her plans to place the government of Ul'dah into the hands of its citizens.
Raubahn: Whatever path she chooses to take, I shall walk it with her. And we shall tread slowly, lest the nation be unsettled in our wake.

Lolorito: Her Grace's compassion is a shining beacon to us all...but what our city truly thrives upon is competition.
Lolorito: 'Tis in the struggle against our rivals that opportunities are seized and fortunes made. And with the Empire on the offensive once more, now would hardly seem the time to turn our system of government upon its head.

Alphinaud: Are you privy to new intelligence, my lord?

Lolorito: I would hardly call it new. Remind me: what was the name of that enormous imperial warship which met its end in Mor Dhona? Wait, I have it! The Agrius. Yes, well, 'twould appear that the Garleans have been hard at work on another such vessel.

Pipin: How close are they to completing this ship!? Is it operational!?

Lolorito: Its maiden flight was a success, I hear. I should imagine Emperor Varis is eager to see how it performs in battle.
Lolorito: My lords and lady/ladies, I move that it is time to repair the damage caused by Teledji Adeledji, and prepare our great nation to repel the Empire once more.

Alphinaud: 'Tis well that the sultana has awoken. The Syndicate yet needs to put its house in order, but 'twould seem the worst of the confusion has passed.
Alphinaud: Ul'dah has taken control of its future...and I must do the same.
Alphinaud: I have decided to disband the Crystal Braves.
Alphinaud: Among the recruits, there were those who supported our order's goals and convictions with all sincerity. 'Tis my hope that these loyal men and women will choose to remain our allies in the battles to come.
Alphinaud: As for those who sided with the traitor, Ilberd, they shall be hunted down and held to account for their crimes. It is my earnest hope that they will surrender themselves peaceably when the time comes...though I think it unlikely.
Alphinaud: Ah, my all-conquering Crystal Braves... The model army meant to pave the way for a single, unified Grand Company of Eorzea. That so high an ideal should be brought so low...
Alphinaud: I need not tell you how deeply the betrayal stung me. Yet I see now that it was mine own naivety and pride which allowed the Braves to fall prey to corruption.
Alphinaud: As ever, it is to your own shining example that I turn for inspiration. Like you, I mean to stand firm in the face of hardship, and give mine all for the cause.
Alphinaud: Let us resume the search for our missing comrades, that we might come together to shine the light of dawn across the realm once more.
Alphinaud: The role of Crystal Brave commander suited me ill, and I shall play it no longer. Henceforth, I shall be no more or less than Alphinaud, proud member of the Scions.

Speaking with Alphinaud
Alphinaud: I blush to speak thus of mine inner turmoil...
Alphinaud: But the fact remains: there is no woman/man alive in whom I would rather confide. Were it not for your shining example, I might never have emerged from beneath the pall of my despair.

Journal
*Francel is ever looking upward toward new heights for the Firmament.

*Lord Francel rejoices at your return, and cheerfully regales you with the latest tidings regarding the continued restoration and development of the Firmament. As the young nobleman tells it, his newest goal is to transform the district into a new hub of trade befitting this new age in which Ishgard has opened itself to the world. To that end, he seeks to visit the three nations in hopes of enticing prominent merchants and traders to enter into a mutually profitable business partnership. No sooner has he asked for your escort than you are joined by none other than Count Charlemend de Durendaire, who imperiously insists that he join you on your expedition. Apprehensive but cautiously optimistic as to what lies ahead, you set off for the Carline Canopy in Gridania to join Francel and the count.

*You reconvene with Lord Francel and Lord Charlemend in Gridania. No sooner have you greeted your companions than does the Count de Durendaire rush off to engage the local populace, confident that the prestige and influence of his great house will suffice to make the trade negotiations a swift success. Lord Francel, for his part, is skeptical of this approach, and the two of you resolve to pursue the count, lest he unintentionally sabotage the mission at hand.

*You venture out into the streets of Gridania to find that Lord Charlemend has managed only to incur the ire of the townspeople with his pompous, overbearing attitude. Fearing the consequences if the Count de Durendaire presses on with his heavy-handed approach, Lord Francel calmly and diplomatically suggests that the three of you regroup and try your luck at one of the many artisan guilds for which the forest city-state is known, a proposal to which Lord Charlemend grudgingly agrees.

*You arrive at the Leatherworkers' Guild, where Lord Francel's more measured approach immediately proves to bear fruit, thanks in large part to a fortuitous meeting with a mercenary-turned-merchant who plied his former trade at Camp Dragonhead during the war. The young man instantly recognizes Lord Francel, and─after sharing a moment's reminiscence about the beloved, departed Lord Haurchefant─eagerly offers to aid your cause by introducing you to his employer, Maisenta of the prestigious Black Rabbit Traders. Overjoyed at this turn of events, Lord Francel thanks the former swordsman, and prepares to welcome his potential new trading partner as the Count de Durendaire grumbles and grouses beside you.

*Though Maisenta is initially skeptical of what she and her organization stand to gain from expanding their business to Ishgard, you are successfully able to argue on Lord Francel's behalf, convincing the shrewd trader that the arrangement promises to be lucrative for both parties. Offering a verbal agreement to prepare a shipment of wares to grace the Firmament's markets, she takes her leave to begin the necessary preparations. Encouraged by your success in Gridania, Lord Francel is eager to move on to your next destination. The Count de Durendaire, on the other hand, appears keen to prove that this was but a case of novice's luck...

Dialogue
Francel: [Forename]! 'Tis always a pleasure to see you here in the Firmament. You'll be pleased to hear that the district is home to an ever-growing number of thoroughly satisfied residents, thanks in no small part to your tireless efforts on our behalf.
Francel: In particular, I'm proud to say that we have spared no effort to realize Lady Hilda's ideal of a place where one and all can have a roof over their head and food in their belly, provided they are willing to work hard and make an honest living.
Francel: Seeing as things are progressing most swimmingly on that front, I have decided to turn my eye to Lord Briardien's most astute recommendation: encouraging the flow of goods and services, so as to build a thriving economy that will serve as the area's lifeblood.
Francel: As such, Augebert and his men have been hard at work putting the final touches on the ward I have dubbed Featherfall, which is to serve as the Firmament's center of commerce and trade. There is but one remaining issue to resolve...
Francel: Namely, how we might distinguish our own marketplace from the Jeweled Crozier. After all, if we hope to attract vendors and customers alike to the Firmament, we must offer something that they cannot already find at a more established location.
Francel: After giving the matter considerable thought, it struck me ─ what if we were to bring in merchants from the realm over to ply their trade here, that Featherfall might be the Holy See's new hub of foreign trade?
Francel: It is a most inspired idea, would you not say? And─ if you would not disapprove ─ I would ask you to accompany me as our designated emissary to the three city-states.After all, who better to convince our esteemed guests to make the journey here to Ishgard than one of your influence and prestige?
???: And if you would not disapprove─or, quite honestly, even if you would ─ I will be accompanying you as well.
Francel: L-Lord Charlemend!
Charlemand de Durendaire:It is far from my place to object, but for whatever reason would the Count de Durendaire wish to come along on our humble expedition? Particularly in light of your honored house's rather...shall we say, conservative...views toward the expansion of foreign trade...
Charlemand de Durendaire: I'll thank you not to make assumptions about the interests of my house, Lord Francel. I have always acted in what I believe to be my homeland's best interests. And I will continue to do so.
Charlemand de Durendaire:But I assure you that we took only the necessary precautions to defend the See from external threats at a time of war. Surely the savior of Ishgard can understand our position.
Charlemand de Durendaire: At any rate, the war is over, and our nation has entered a new age. I am not inclined to sit idly by as House Durendaire is left behind the times.
Charlemand de Durendaire: And yet, at this most vital of junctures, my son and heir remains lost at sea, and my cousins are either too young or unworldly for the task. And so it falls to me to see to matters myself.
Charlemand de Durendaire: I daresay there is some merit for you as well. After all, whatever negotiations you intend to conduct, they can only be aided by the presence of the head of Ishgard's highest of High Houses.
Charlemand de Durendaire:...I trust you have no objections?
Francel: Your offer of assistance is most generous, Lord Charlemend. I would not dream of refusing it.
Charlemand de Durendaire: Of course not. We depart at once, yes? I've heard Gridania is most lovely at this time of year.
Francel: Y-Yes...my intention was always to begin our expedition at our closest neighbor. I have it on good word that an establishment there known as the Carline Canopy would be a suitable─
Charlemand de Durendaire: The Carline Canopy it is, then. Do take care not to lag behind, yes?
Francel: L-Lord Charlemend! Wait!

Optional dialogue
Charlemand de Durendaire: ...So this is Gridania. The tomes fail to mention how disagreeably dank it is.

Speak with France at the Carline Canopy in Gridania.
Francel: ...So this is Gridania! Why, it is even more verdant and lush than I had imagined!
Charlemand de Durendaire: Hmph. A danker, gloomier city I can scarce imagine. I am glad I do not live here.
Charlemand de Durendaire: ...And yet, this nation is home to a great number of our own kind. Convincing an Elezen trader or two to come to Ishgard will be done in less than the time it takes for an afternoon tea.
Charlemand de Durendaire: To start, I will enlist the services of one of the locals. Feel free to come along, Lord Francel ─ mayhap you'll learn something.
Francel: W-Wait...Lord Charlemend!
Charlemand de Durendaire: Oh dear, [Forename]. This is precisely what I was afraid of!
Francel: I did some research before our departure. No doubt this is common knowledge to you, but I read that Gridanians are reserved types who do not warm easily to outsiders ─ if perhaps not to the degree of our own people.
Francel: I fear the count ─ for all his good intentions ─ might sour the local populace on our offer before we can even make it. Come, we must stop him!

Optional dialogue
Francel: Phew! Fortunately, it would seem he has yet to engage the townspeople...
Guarded Gridanian: Hm? Who are you, and what business have you here?

Speak with Charlemand de Durendaire.
Charlemand de Durendaire: You there. I am looking to speak with one of your nation's most prominent traders. Tell me where I might find such a person, and be quick about it ─ I'm a busy man.
Guarded Gridanian: Hm? I'm not in the habit of entertaining outsiders ─ rude, arrogant ones least of all. Bugger off and do it yourself!
Charlemand de Durendaire: What!? Why, the sheer gall of that woman!
Francel: With all due respect, Lord Charlemend...we are guests in this land. Just as you and I were once wary of outsiders like good [Forename] here, so, too, are these people wary of us.
Francel: In the world outside the Holy See, our titles or the prestige of our houses will avail us no special privilege. Mayhap it would behoove us to conduct our affairs with a measure of humility...
Francel: ...But I fear we have already aroused the suspicion of the townspeople. Let us try our luck at another location...mayhap one of the guilds for which this place is so well known?
Charlemand de Durendaire: Hmph. A guild, you say? Very well. Let us stop blithering and be off.

Optional dialogue
Charlemand de Durendaire: If you know the way to this guild, then let us be off already, yes? The sooner we can take our leave of this place, the better, I say.

Francel: If I recall, the Leatherworkers' Guild is in the part of town known as Old Gridania. Would that be correct, [Forename]?

Wait for passersby outside the Leatherworkers' Guild.
Francel: Yes, this place seems rather lively. No doubt we can find someone willing to assist us here.
Francel: I beg your pardon, my esteemed sir! I am a humble visitor from Ishgard, and I was wondering if I might trouble you with a question or two.
Mistrustful Merchant: Hm? What's that, now?
Mistrustful Merchant: Wait... Can it be...Lord Francel? Hah, it is you! Whatever brings you to the Twelveswood?
Francel: What? Pray forgive me, I do not believe I have had the pleasure...
Mistrustful Merchant: You wouldn't know me, but I sure know you. During the war, I plied my trade as a sellsword at Camp Dragonhead. You often came to dine at Lord Haurchefant's invitation, yes?
Mistrustful Merchant: Why...that I did! Lord Haurchefant was a most benevolent man. There were few things he enjoyed more than sharing a good meal in the company of his friends and his men alike.
Mistrustful Merchant: Aye, and I was one of them. I fondly remember the times I sat at his table, sharing in his meat and mead. In the warmth of his hall and his company, for a moment you could forget the bitter cold outside.
Mistrustful Merchant: It's a memory that's stayed with me to this day, long after I returned to Gridania and hung up my blade. Lord Haurchefant was a great man, and I had hoped to return to Ishgard one day to visit him.
Mistrustful Merchant: But then the news of his tragic passing arrived... Even now, I find it hard to believe he's gone.
Francel: I as well, my friend. Not a day goes by that I do not think of him, and the kindness he showed me in the darkest of days...
Francel: And though I will forever mourn his passing, I take solace in knowing that his sacrifice was not for naught. For because of those like him ─ and [Forename] here ─ the war is at long last over, and our nation welcomes a new age of enlightenment and restoration.
Francel: So it is that we come here to fair Gridania, in hopes of establishing trade that will benefit both our nations. Might you perhaps know of any merchants or traders who might be interested in exploring such a possibility?
Mistrustful Merchant: Do I ever! And nothing would please me more than to be able to return the kindness that your countrymen showed me!
Mistrustful Merchant: It just so happens that I do work for Black Rabbit Traders these days. Perhaps you've heard of them? Maisenta's in charge there, and she's always looking for promising new business partners! Just wait here ─ I'll bring her right over!
Francel: My good man, it is as if the gods themselves sent you to us! If she does not mind the imposition, I would be honored to meet this Lady Maisenta!

Optional dialogue
Charlemand de Durendaire: I had known that Lord Haurchefant was undiscerning in the company he kept, but to think that it would be to the benefit of our nation...

Speak with Francel.
Francel: I trust that you've met this Lady Maisenta, [Forename]? Do you suppose she'll be receptive to our offer?
Maisenta: So you're the guest from Ishgard I've heard so much about. I am Maisenta, of Black Rabbit Traders fame. I hear you have a business proposition for me?
Francel: It is a pleasure and an honor both to make your acquaintance, Lady Maisenta. I am Francel de Haillenarte, and I have the privilege of overseeing the reconstruction of our fair city, a task which includes building a thriving economy.
Francel: To that end, I wish to invite the realm's preeminent trading concerns to establish outposts in our new commercial district. If it please you, will you not consider bringing your operations to Ishgard?
Maisenta: I'd heard that you Ishgardians opened your borders, but quite frankly, I wasn't expecting to receive such an eager and enthusiastic proposition.
Maisenta: ...And it's an interesting one, I'll grant you that. Still, as much as I'd like to be of aid, I run a business here, not a charity.
Maisenta: And so I'm forced to ask: why should I expand to Ishgard? What do you offer that other places do not?
Charlemand de Durendaire: A well-founded concern, of course... Be assured that our nation offers businesses many opportunities. For example...er...

What will you say?
> You'll have immediate access to the finest Ishgardian wares.
Maisenta: Now that you mention it, I daresay that Ishgardian furs and fine cuisine could command a high price here in Gridania...
> Ishgardian nobles are notorious spendthrifts...
Maisenta: Now that you mention it, if the well-heeled aristocrats of the High Houses are willing to open their coinpurses for Gridanian craftsmanship, it could prove quite profitable...

Maisenta: All right...[Forename] here's convinced me. The Black Rabbit will come to Ishgard.
Francel: Oh, thank you, Lady Maisenta! You do us a kindness that we will not soon forget!
Maisenta: You can spare me the flowery words. I'm only looking out for my own business interests...as I trust you are as well, no?
Maisenta: In any event, I'd best be going. We'll have to take a full inventory to determine which of our fine goods to bring north. As they say, the Traders do not smile on those who tarry...
Francel: Oh, thank you ever so much, my friend! I could never have done this without you!
Francel: Lady Maisenta's question was only to be expected, yet I found myself at a loss. Your impeccable knowledge of the realm and calmness under pressure have served us well once more.
Charlemand de Durendaire: ...Hmph. You have succeeded here despite the involvement of Houses Haillenarte and Fortemps, not because of it.
Charlemand de Durendaire: The citizens of the sultanate are far more discerning, but fear not. I will show you how negotiations among the upper crust are truly done.
