The Chirurgeon is available all day, in all weather conditions. This fish is caught by using {{action icon|Mooch}} from a {{item icon|Striped Goby}}, which requires Fisher level 25. Other actions available at higher levels will make catching this fish somewhat easier.

; Catch a {{item icon|Striped Goby}} by fishing at [[Fishing Log: The Vein|The Vein]] in Central Shroud.
* The Striped Goby's favored bait is {{item icon|Moth Pupa}}, which has its highest best bite rate (46%). Two other fish will bite on this bait, Crayfish (42%) and Eunuch Crayfish (9%). [[Materia Transmutation]] was released in [[Patch 2.25]]. To unlock Materia Transmutation, players must complete the level 19 [[quests|quest]] {{questlink|feature|Marvelously Mutable Materia}}. Players can talk to [[Kokosamu]] in [[Central Thanalan]] (x23,y14). Players must have completed {{questlink|main|Life, Materia and Everything}} before starting Marvelously Mutable Materia.

===Mechanics===
Players can trade [[Mutamix Bubblypots]] in [[Central Thanalan]] (x23,y13) 5 pieces of any kind of materia and he will give you one random materia in return. The returned materia is guaranteed to be a different type than the starting five, which can be mixed to improve the odds of getting the type the player wants. Occasionally players will get materia that are higher grade than the ones they have traded in.
