Even though the sultanate is the ruling form, the true ruling power in Ul'dah lies with the syndicate. Since the Syndicate is made of multiple factions, with one trying to abolish the Sultanate and create a self-governed state, conflicts happen.

During {{i|The Parting Glass}}, Nanamo announces to abdict the throne and make way for a republic. She wishes for the common people to have equal political power instead of only priviliged few, indirectly meaning to dissolve the Syndicate<ref>{{i|The Parting Glass}}, when the Warrior of Light talks with Nanamo: "...'Tis mine intent that the ruling class of our golden city should take its place beside the common man in a fair and equitable republic. No more shall this nation bow to the whims of a privileged few."</ref>. Spies revealed the plan to the monetarists, and stopped Nanamo's plans.

After Raubahn found [[Meriel]], the former Lady-in-waiting of Nanamo, it is revealed that Lord Lolorito does not want for the government to be destablized, and therefore supports the sultana<ref>{{i|A General Summons}}, when Lord Lolorito speaks with Raubahn: "...Oh, I have no desire to harm Her Grace─'twould profit me little to destabilize our government.</ref><ref>{{i|Keeping the Flame Alive}}, when Dewlala speaks with Raubahn:"...he knows the value of stability─to the very gil, like as not. During the Sixth Astral Era, Sahagin emerged from the sea, and the pirates of Limsa Lominsa agreed to a covenant with the Kobolds: "To men shall go the bounty of the sea; to kobolds shall go the bounty of the land.”<ref>{{i|The Great Ship Vylbrand}}, when accepting the quest: "...To men shall go the bounty of the sea; to kobolds shall go the bounty of the land.” An ostensibly equitable arrangement...conspicuously lacking in detail."</ref>. Because details were lacking in this covenenat, the pirates took advantage of it and claimed the northern reaches of La Noscea for them, which angered the Kobolds, and constant conflict followed.

Following [[Jorin Lightheart]]'s communion with the [[Elementals]] and subsequent re-emergence of the people of [[Gelmorra]] returning to the surface, '''Jorin''' received a blessing of light, that would not make a reappearance until much later when he would have a child that would be born with two strange round bumps on his head. This child would show strange gifts of prophecy and premonition, predicting rainstorms, blight amongst plants and crops, and eventually begin to hear the voices of the '''Elementals''' themselves.

By age twelve, the strange bumps eventually turned into horns, and the boy stopped growing altogether. While some thought the boy sick, '''Jorin''' eventually realized he was the blessing bestowed upon him by the '''Elementals''': a [[Padjal]], the first of his kind. The boy discarded his birth name, taking the name '''I-Ohok-Pota''', which he stated was the sound the aetheric waves made when the '''Elementals''' spoke to him. Following in his example, '''Jorin''' took the name '''Pota''' as well.

Almost forty years later, another '''Padjal''' child was born, whom '''I-Ohok-Pota''' took in and raised, naming him '''U-Kote-Num'''. Following this, all '''Padjal''' children would be entrusted to '''Pota''', where they would be raised with their own kind. They were entrusted with the [[Amdapor]]i [[White Magic]] by the '''Elementals''', and were taught how to offer succor to the forest and remove any taint infecting it.

*A blasphemy has made the Twelveswood its lair, stalking its denizens and casting a dark pall over the entire region. It has proven difficult to track, and so the Adders' Nest has requested the help of a fearless defender to help protect their soldiers during the hunt. You are to report to the Adders' Nest at once.

*The effort to find the blasphemy is being led by none other than the Elder Seedseer herself, Kan-E-Senna. She explains that their troubles began after an unidentified man transformed into a hideous beast which the people dubbed Gleipnir─so named for its similarity to a creature of legend which bears chain-like patterns on its hide. Its claws and horns appear to be coated with a potent poison that causes these selfsame patterns to manifest on an injured victim's skin. This mark is disturbingly similar to one caused by an infamous sickness known as the Creeping Death. Alas, unlike the sickness, those poisoned by Gleipnir cannot be cured by medicine or magick. This leaves you with few options to combat the beast, and as you contemplate this problem, Kan–E's attendant receives a chilling message via linkpearl: Gleipnir has struck again. Fortunately, the victim yet lives and is being conveyed to Fallgourd Float, and so the Elder Seedseer bids you accompany her to the settlement and speak with Aethelmaer, its overseer.

*Aethelmaer informs you that the man is being treated by a Hearer outside of the Bobbing Cork. The healer is doing what he can, but the Elder Seedseer should surely be capable of doing more. Suspecting she may require a pair of helping hands, she asks you to follow her to the inn.

*The Fallgourd Hearer is doing his utmost to keep the man alive, but the poison frustrates his efforts. No sooner does Kan-E-Senna approach to attend the man than you hear a shout from nearby─a man yelling about an approaching swarm of chigoes. The vilekin are known to carry the Creeping Death, and the Hearer fears that allowing them into Fallgourd Float would spark panic among its people. The Elder Seedseer bids you investigate and resolve the situation if you can.

*The unharmed but distressed man warns of a mass of chigoes near Alder Springs. Fallgourd Float has few Wailers to spare, and so it falls upon you and the Keeper of the Entwined Serpents to combat this menace.

*When the dust has settled, countless chigoes lie dead at your feet, and the forest is much quieter for your efforts. Cowering before you is a man who was but moments before smothered in a crush of wings, and still very much in need of assistance.

*The flustered man is none the worse for wear, and he proceeds to tell you that he was accosted by the swarm while on his way to deliver medicine used to treat the Creeping Death to Fallgourd Float. While it is unclear whether the man was originally driven by opportunism or altruism, out of gratitude he offers you his wares free of charge. Gleipnir's poison still courses through the victim's veins, and so you must make haste to Fallgourd Float with the potential cure.

*Although Kan-E-Senna administers the medicine to the sick man, he is soon overcome with convulsions before, with a final cry of pain, he at last dies. The distraught Elder Seedseer strives not to let her emotions cloud her judgment, and concludes that Gleipnir's poison must be far too powerful to be carried by chigoes or any other ordinary creature; the people need only ware the blasphemy. While this knowledge comes as a relief of sorts, you are no closer to stopping the blasphemy. The beast must first be found, and to that end the Elder Seedseer suggests returning to the Adders' Nest to scour recent reports for any new information.

*Indeed, in your absence many sightings of Gleipnir have been reported all throughout the Twelveswood. However, when panic clouds judgment, a rabbit in the brush is often mistaken for something much more sinister. The Order of the Twin Adder must nevertheless carefully consider every report and determine which merit further investigation. And so, Kan–E's attendant asks that you stay safe in the meantime.

During the Sixth Astral Era, Sahagin emerged from the sea, and the pirates of Limsa Lominsa agreed to a covenant with the Kobolds: "To men shall go the bounty of the sea; to kobolds shall go the bounty of the land.”<ref>{{i|The Great Ship Vylbrand}}, when accepting the quest: "...To men shall go the bounty of the sea; to kobolds shall go the bounty of the land.” An ostensibly equitable arrangement...conspicuously lacking in detail."</ref>. Because details were lacking in this covenenat, the pirates took advantage of it and claimed the northern reaches of La Noscea for them, which angered the Kobolds, and constant conflict followed.
The calamity took the spawning grounds of the Sahagin, so the conflict was enhanced as they claimed parts of La Noscea for themselves as well<ref>{{i|The Admiral's Resolve}}, when speaking to Merlwyb: ..."Save for a brief moment of cooperation with the kobolds, our history has been one of nigh-constant territorial squabbling.

Later, the '''Nagxian Resistance''' would help at the final battle of the [[Bozjan Resistance]] at [[the Dalriada]].

During the occupation, the people of [[Doma]] who were caught acting as part of a resistance were often sent to labor camps as punishment and were forced to work in grueling conditions, often resulting in death.

During the [[Second Astral Era]], several groups of [[Hyur]] and [[Miqo'te]] migrated to the land. Initially, the [[Dragons]] were hostile, and there were wars over land for a time. Eventually the [[Dragons]] turned to the Elder Wyrm [[Bahamut]]. He settled the differences between the races and all species were able to coexist in peace.

There were several other races in the land as well, such as the tree-like beings that worshiped [[Sephirot]], the race that worshiped [[Zurvan]], and several other races that unified under [[Sophia]]. For centuries, these groups lived together and flourished.

Near the end of the [[Third Astral Era]], in an attempt to wake the [[Allagan]] people from their self-imposed stupor, the resurrected [[Emperor Xande]] sent his armies to '''Meracydia''' to invade with the goal of conquering it. Initially the armies were rebuffed, not being able to make it past the shores. However, as the battle raged, the [[Allagan]] employed various other methods to attack, such as their [[Chimera]]s. In a decisive battle, [[Bahamut]] fell against the [[Allagan]]s.

Seemingly out of nowhere, the '''Meracydians''' called upon the power of their gods, bringing forth the [[Warring Triad]]. Though they initially drove the [[Allagan]]s back, they further developed their technology and imprisoned the [[Primals]], using them to further power their warmachina. The sudden appearance of these gods was the first recorded summoning in history, and it is heavily believed the [[Ascians]] were the ones to show the '''Meracydians''' the way.

With the power of summoning at their disposal, [[Tiamat]] sought to revive her broodmate, and summoned [[Bahamut]] back to the living. However, the being that appeared was but an enraged shade of the Elder Wyrm, and it acted as a being of destruction incarnate. Once again the [[Allagan Empire]] was pushed back, but by this time [[Xande]] had entered into a pact with a [[Voidsent]] named [[The Cloud of Darkness]] after the Empire had learned to open tears into [[the Void]] called [[Voidgate]]s. The [[Voidsent]] slayed any who stood before them, and used the corpses as vessels for more [[Voidsent]]. The overwhelming army could not be stopped, and eventually the [[Allagan Empire]] had taken '''Meracydia''', slaying most of the residents and capturing [[Bahamut]], later imprisoning the wyrm in the satelite [[Dalamud]]. Over the centuries that followed, the few remaining tribes either died out or migrated, like the [[Miqo'te]], who headed to [[Southern Ilsabard]].

Far to the south of the Three Great Continents, beyond the equatorial line, lies the second of Hydaelyn’s three landmasses—Meracydia. Five millennia ago at the close of the Third Astral Era, the Allagan Empire, unsatisfied with controlling merely Aldenard, Ilsabard, and Othard, set their sights to the south and began an invasion that would end with nearly the entire continent being rendered a wasteland. While some areas remain uninhabitable even today, those which have been repopulated remain recluse and very rarely welcome contact with the civilizations of the northern hemisphere, ofttimes attacking any who approach, whether it be by sea or by air. Positioned between the two continents, [[Ilsabard]] is the northernmost continent. Due to this, it is characterized by extreme temperatures and unpredictable weather. Beyond the mountains in the center of the continent lie some of the most treacherous and inhospitable areas on [[Hydaelyn]]. The continent is often besieged by unrelenting storms in the summer and harsh climates and frozen seas in the winter. Until the [[Garlean Empire]] made massive leaps in technological advancements, the inhabitants of [[Ilsabard]] struggled simply to survive.

Once the [[Garlean Empire]] began the [[Magitek]] revolution and conquered several surrounding nations, they began expanding outwards claiming the lands of the other continents with the final goal of taking [[Eorzea]] and bringing all under their control.
